Vinyl vs Aluminum Windows

Conservation Construction, Aluminum, Vinyl, Aluminum Windows, Vinyl Windows

For anyone looking to replace the windows on their home, you should know that there are a few different materials to choose from, each with their own properties. For the purpose of this post however, let’s focus on the most common: vinyl and aluminum.

There are many different ways to measure the positive and negative aspects of these types of windows, but we feel that the most important characteristics for the homeowner to know are more about the design, appearance, and durability. Let’s go over each window in depth for you that way you can make a more informed decision when it comes time to replace your windows!

Design:

One of the most important aspects of the design of any home material is its energy efficiency. In this category, the vinyl window vastly outperforms its aluminum counterpart. Vinyl windows are industry leaders when it comes to being energy efficient, while aluminum conducts both heat and cold, allowing it right into your home when you don’t want either.

When it comes to weight and strength, the aluminum window is more optimal. Aluminum windows weigh less than vinyl, yet are stronger. However, they are more prone to letting in outside noise, and have a higher cost than vinyl across the board.

Appearance:

While this category is purely up to the taste of the homeowner, there are still totally different features which should be understood before making a decision. When it comes to appearance vinyl windows usually are more attractive. The wood-grain appearance is a popular alternative to actual wood (which is extremely problematic), and many prefer it to the painted look of the aluminum windows as well. However, if you are looking for an exact color, you may be more interested in an aluminum window. Vinyl cannot be painted, so a color match may be impossible. Aluminum can be painted or powder-coated, providing the exact color you may want. But be wary, if the paint or coating chips, the aluminum underneath will be visible, which makes for one ugly looking window. Not to mention that aluminum corrodes over the years. This can be quite an eye sore later down the line. Not to mention new windows are more streamlined. With fewer components and easy operation vinyl windows are a breeze to clean.

Durability:

When it comes to durability there is almost no comparison. In terms of maintenance, vinyl windows require basically none. They are not painted so they never fade, the moving parts never require lubrication like aluminum, and they never pit or corrode. Aluminum windows however, if not maintained regularly, can be a nightmare. Since they are metal, they tend to pit, dent and corrode when exposed to the elements. The paint and powder-coating fades, and tends to chip so repainting will be a regular occurrence. The bottom line is that with aluminum windows, you will be out at least once a year checking for damage and repainting, while vinyl is just a “hang it and leave it” type of window.

The differences in vinyl and aluminum windows would personally make me lean heavily towards vinyl, but each homeowner is different. If you have an idea in your head that requires an exact color and look, and don’t mind a little bit of maintenance (like many homeowners out there), an aluminum window may be right for you. As I said previously, the choice comes down to the taste and work ethic of the individual homeowner.
