Are Home Windows Made Of Tempered Glass?

Conservation Construction, New Window, Window Replacement, Home Window Replacement,

Now we could go into the short answer of whether or not home windows are made of tempered glass, but where would the fun in that be? We like to make you wait a bit for the answer to this profound question.

Okay, maybe this isn’t quite a “Profound” question per say, but it is a good question to start asking as you look for new replacement windows. Tempered glass windows are common in homes, but they are not ubiquitous other windows. That’s because normal window glass does not have to be tempered. Strong sure, but not tempered. Why is this?

Where Is Tempered Glass Used?

Tempered windows are typically only used by entrances of a house. Think about windows near doors and you’ve got the idea for where tempered glass is needed. That’s because tempered glass is stronger than other types of glass. Tempered glass has a minimum surface compression of 10,000 pounds-per-square-inch. The extra strength is needed near entrances to prevent glass shatter, and to comply with most building codes. All windows including; single pane and double pane windows need tempered glass if it’s within a certain number of inches from the door.

Why You Don’t Need Tempered Glass In Your Entire House

Now your entire house does not need to have tempered glass. This glass is used because of slamming doors and people exiting and entering a home. Tempered glass prevents breaks, cracking and everything else in between.  It is multiple times stronger than regular glass which prevents it from turning into jagged shards on the floor when guests exit and enter your home. Not to mention tempered glass is about 3x more expensive than regular window glass so you wouldn’t want it in your entire home or you’d be spending a lot more money.

Energy Efficient

Tempered glass is no less energy efficient than regular glass, especially when you go with a Window from Conservation Construction. That’s because we still use all the same extraordinary coating on the glass that makes it energy efficient. We use Easy Clean Glass, Low-E Glass Coatings, and Argon Gas mixture to ensure lifelong energy efficiency and insulation for the window. On top of this, you’ll get vinyl frame which are foam filled to ensure better strength against air infiltration.
