Most front doors open inward because an inward-swinging door keeps the hinges inside the home, works well with storm doors, and is less likely to be blocked by snow, ice, leaves, or porch debris. An inward swing also gives you more control when answering the door because you can open it slightly, use a chain lock, or check who is outside before fully opening the entryway.

Outswing front doors can still make sense in certain situations, especially in hurricane-prone areas or homes with tight interior entryways. For most residential homes, though, inward-swinging entry doors remain common because they balance security, weather protection, daily convenience, and front-porch functionality.

Why Residential Doors Swing Inward

front door swinging inward for a local home

The reason your front door swings inward is purposeful. Even simple door designs have hinges and hinge pins that allow the door to open and close. On an inswing front door, those hinges sit on the interior side of the home, which keeps them on the protected side of the door.

That matters for security. If a door swings outward, the hinges are usually visible from the exterior side. Some outswing doors are built with non-removable hinge pins or tamper-resistant hinges, but those features need to be part of the door system. With a traditional inswing door, the hinge side is harder to access from outside because it is inside the home.

An inward swing also makes daily use easier. You can answer the door without pushing it into a guest, open it slightly before stepping outside, and use interior security features like door chains, reinforced strike plates, smart locks, and secondary locks more easily.

What Building Codes Say About Door Swing Direction

Building codes treat homes and public buildings differently. For most single-family homes, there is no universal rule that the main front door has to swing inward. The International Residential Code says homes need at least one side-hinged exit door with a clear opening size, but it does not require every front door to swing inward.

Public and commercial buildings follow different rules. The International Building Code says certain doors need to swing outward when they serve rooms or areas with 50 or more people, or certain high-risk spaces. That is why doors in places like stores, schools, and offices often open outward, while front doors on homes are usually handled differently.

For your home, the best door swing direction depends on the entryway layout, weather, storm door needs, local code requirements, and the door system being installed. A professional door installer can help confirm what makes sense before replacement.

Residential vs. Public Buildings

infographic of residential vs commercial door swing

In public buildings, many entry and exit doors open outward for emergency safety. If there is a fire or another urgent situation, people need to move toward the exit quickly. An outward-swinging door allows a crowd to move in the direction of travel without needing to pull the door back into the group.

Homes are different. Residential front doors are used by a smaller number of people, and daily comfort, weather protection, security, and entryway layout are usually bigger concerns. That is why inward-swinging doors are common for houses, townhomes, and many residential properties.

Should Your Front Door Open Inward or Outward?

Both inswing and outswing front doors can work when the door is designed and installed correctly. The better choice depends on how the entryway is used, what the weather is like, and what the home needs from the door system.

For many homes, an inswing front door is usually the more practical choice. It works well with snow, storm doors, weather sealing, and common residential layouts.

Storm Door Pairings

Many people choose a storm door to go with their entry door for extra protection against wind, rain, snow, and changing weather. When the main front door swings inward, a storm door can usually be installed on the exterior side and swing outward.

This setup gives you the benefits of both door types. The main entry door opens inward for security and convenience, while the storm door adds another protective layer outside. Storm doors can also help protect the main door from direct weather exposure and may add comfort near the entryway.

At Conservation Construction, we offer storm door and entry door options for homes that need better weather protection, comfort, and curb appeal. You can learn more about storm doors or explore our doors page for additional entryway options.

Other Reasons Front Doors Open Inward

An inward-swinging door makes it easier to open the door slightly and check who is outside before stepping out. If you use a chain lock, security bar, smart lock, or doorbell camera, an inward swing gives you more control when answering the door.

An inward swing also helps protect the door from exterior obstructions. Snow, ice, leaves, porch furniture, packages, and debris are less likely to trap you inside because the door opens into the home instead of pushing outward.

There is also a design advantage. Since the hinges are inside, the exterior side of the entry door often looks cleaner and more finished from the street.

Why Some Front Doors Open Outward

Outward-swinging doors are more common in places that deal with hurricanes and extreme wind pressure. In those regions, an outswing door can help resist wind forces because the wind pushes the door more tightly into the frame instead of pushing it inward.

That design can make sense in coastal storm zones, but it is not always the best choice for Colorado homes. Here, the bigger concerns are usually snow, ice, wind, cold drafts, storm door compatibility, and keeping the entryway easy to use through winter weather.

Outswing doors can also help in tight interior entryways because the door does not swing into the living space. If you are considering an outswing front door, make sure the system includes the right hinge protection, weather sealing, landing space, and installation details.

Are Inswing Doors Better for Colorado Homes?

For many Colorado homes, an inswing front door is the better everyday choice. Snow and ice can build up outside the entryway, and an outward-swinging door may be harder to open if that buildup is sitting against the door. An inward-swinging door helps reduce that problem because it opens into the home.

Colorado weather can also shift quickly, so storm door compatibility matters. An inward-swinging entry door leaves room for an exterior storm door, giving the home another layer of protection from wind, snow, rain, and cold air.

If your current door is drafty, damaged, hard to lock, or difficult to open and close, a replacement door can improve more than appearance. A properly installed entry door can support better comfort, security, weather protection, and day-to-day use.

Why New Doors Are a Great Option

It is worth considering a new front door if your current door is drafty, damaged, outdated, or difficult to use. Older doors can lose their seal, weaken over time, and make the entryway less comfortable during changing weather.

New entry doors can improve security, energy efficiency, curb appeal, weather protection, daily operation, and interior comfort. Steel and fiberglass entry doors are popular options because they offer strength, insulation, and design flexibility.

At Conservation Construction, our steel and fiberglass entry doors are designed with durability, insulation, and reliable performance in mind. Our doors are foam-filled by a computer-driven process, helping them provide better energy performance and comfort for Colorado homes.

If you are exploring new entryway options, take a look at front doors that look like wood but are not and our entry door replacement options to find a style that blends durability with standout curb appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a front door open inward or outward?

For most residential homes, a front door opens inward. An inswing door keeps hinges inside, works well with storm doors, and is less likely to be blocked by snow or debris outside. Outswing doors can work in certain situations when they are built with the right hinge protection and weather sealing.

Which direction should a front door open?

Most front doors on homes open inward. Public and commercial buildings often use outward-swinging doors because emergency exit rules are different for larger buildings and higher occupant loads.

Is there a code requirement for door swing direction?

For many homes, there is no single universal rule that says the main front door must open inward. The International Residential Code requires at least one side-hinged egress door for each dwelling unit and sets minimum opening requirements. Commercial buildings follow different rules, and some doors must swing in the direction of egress travel.

Are outswing front doors secure?

Outswing front doors can be secure when they are designed with non-removable hinge pins, tamper-resistant hinges, reinforced frames, and strong locks. Without those details, exposed hinges can become a concern. That is why the full door system matters.

Why do stores and offices have doors that open outward?

Many commercial doors open outward because building codes focus on safe emergency exit. When a door serves a larger occupant load, it often needs to swing in the direction people are exiting so a crowd can leave quickly.

Are inswing doors better for Colorado homes?

In many cases, yes. Inswing doors are practical for Colorado because they are less likely to be blocked by snow outside the home. They also work well with exterior storm doors and offer a clean, secure entryway design.

Final Thoughts

Now you know why most front doors open inward. The design supports security, weather protection, storm door compatibility, and everyday convenience.

Outswing doors can be useful in certain situations, especially in hurricane-prone areas or tight interior entryways. However, for many Colorado homes, an inswing front door is usually the better fit.

Steel vs. Fiberglass Front Door Replacement

Upgrading your front door is one of the rare home improvement projects where you actually get to have your cake and eat it, too. It’s a triple threat: it boosts your home’s "face value," slashes your energy bills, and keeps your living room from feeling like a drafty hallway.

If you’re still rocking a weathered wood door from the 90s, here is why steel and fiberglass are the modern gold standards for replacement.

1. Energy Efficiency: Keeping the Elements Out

Our modern doors aren't just solid slabs; they are engineered systems. Unlike solid wood, which can expand and contract with the weather, steel and fiberglass doors are built with high-density polyurethane foam cores.

2. Low Maintenance, High Durability

Let’s be honest: nobody wants to spend their Saturday sanding and restaining a door.

3. Unbeatable Security

Your front door is the primary line of defense for your family. When it comes to sheer strength, these materials outclass traditional wood.

4. The ROI (Return on Investment)

If you’re planning to sell your home eventually, a new front door is one of the smartest moves you can make. According to various "Cost vs. Value" reports, a steel door replacement consistently ranks as one of the highest ROI home projects, often recouping nearly 100% of its cost upon resale. It’s the ultimate way to nail a first impression.

Pro Tip: If you want the "wow" factor of wood without the upkeep, high-end fiberglass is almost indistinguishable from the real thing, even from a few feet away.

Conclusion

Whether you choose the industrial strength of steel or the versatile, rot-proof beauty of fiberglass, you’re making an investment in your home’s efficiency and safety. You’ll stop paying to heat the neighborhood, and you’ll finally have a door that opens smoothly every single time—regardless of the humidity. Contact us today for your free quote.

When to Know It's Time to Replace Your Front Door

Your front door is more than just an entryway; it's a critical component of your home's security, energy efficiency, and curb appeal. While a well-maintained door can last for decades, there comes a time when replacement becomes necessary. Knowing the signs can save you money, enhance your home's comfort, and ensure your peace of mind.

Beyond the Obvious: Subtle Signs of Deterioration

While a splintered frame or a perpetually jamming lock are clear indicators, many signs of a failing front door are more subtle. Pay attention to these cues:

Lifespan Considerations

The lifespan of a front door varies greatly depending on its material and how well it's maintained. New doors like the ones we sell at Conservation Construction are made from Fiberglass or Steel so that you can trust they will last for the long haul. We also have lifetime limited warranties to ensure that your door lasts a lifetime.

When to Consult a Professional

Keyless Entry locks

Keyless entry locks have moved beyond futuristic fantasies and are now a common feature in homes. Offering a blend of convenience and enhanced security, these systems eliminate the need for traditional keys, providing a smarter way to manage access.

Convenience

One of the primary advantages of keyless entry is the sheer convenience. Fumbling for keys in the dark or when your hands are full becomes a thing of the past. With options like keypad codes, unlocking a door is quick and effortless. This is particularly beneficial for families with children, individuals with mobility issues, or anyone who has ever locked themselves out.

Security

Beyond convenience, keyless entry systems often provide a higher level of security. Many systems allow you to create unique access codes for different users, granting or revoking access remotely. This eliminates the risk associated with lost or stolen keys, as you can simply disable a code without needing to rekey the entire lock. Audit trails, available on some advanced models, can even track who accessed the property and when, adding an extra layer of security and accountability.

Versatility

The versatility of keyless entry is another significant benefit. From simple keypad locks for residential use to sophisticated biometric systems for commercial buildings, there's a keyless entry solution for almost every need and budget.

Front Doors & Embossing

Front Doors and embossing . . . this is a decorative technique that adds texture, depth, and visual interest to the door's surface. This process involves creating raised or recessed patterns, designs, or logos through heat, pressure, or a combination of both. Typically, it's used on metal, wood, or fiberglass doors to enhance their appearance and make them stand out in a home’s exterior.

How Embossing Works

The embossing process involves using a die or mold to press patterns onto the door material. This is done at Conservation Construction on our metal and fiberglass doors with hydraulic presses. The result is a three-dimensional design that catches light and adds a tactile quality to the door. Embossing can range from simple patterns like geometric shapes to more intricate designs, such as floral motifs or custom logos.

Benefits of Embossing

  1. Aesthetic Appeal: Embossing can transform an ordinary door into a focal point. The raised designs add sophistication, making the door look more custom and high-end.
  2. Personalization: Homeowners can opt for personalized embossed designs, which give the door a unique and tailored feel.
  3. Durability: Embossed patterns are often more resistant to wear compared to surface-applied decorative elements, making them a long-lasting choice.
  4. Increased Curb Appeal: A beautifully embossed door can boost the overall curb appeal of a home, enhancing its exterior design and increasing its market value.

Popular Designs

Embossing can range from subtle textures, such as wood grain patterns on fiberglass doors, to bold, ornate motifs for traditional or modern styles. Many people opt for geometric, or custom designs. For a modern look, simple linear embossing or minimalistic patterns work well, while more intricate designs are favored for classic or vintage aesthetics.

Our doors feature a 20 gauge steel plate which is thicker than most other doors on the market today.

We’re sure you’ll be happy you read today’s article as we cover the history of Door Handles! This doesn’t sound very interesting, but we assure you it is. Once you read this article you can share all the cool facts you learned about door handles with every person you know.

What Did People Use Before Door Handles?

Before handles and door knobs were invented, people used a bolt or a lock to keep a door shut. Only the wealthy could afford a lock and key. Most people used a latch-string, which involved making a small hole in a door and threading a leather thong or string through, which was then looped around a wooden bar.

It may surprise you to learn that the first documented invention of door knobs, as we know them, was in 1878 by a man called Osbourn Dorsey. Osbourn Dorsey was an African American man who invented the doorknob to change the culture of people using unorthodox means of keeping their doors closed.

Early History

China or ceramic knobs were mainly imported from France and England until the first U.S. patent was granted for making door knobs out of potter's clay, and cast-metal knobs were introduced around 1846. Wooden knobs were common but were phased out as composite metal knobs were introduced.

Different Styles

With the Industrial Revolution and the availability of different materials, door knob and door handle styles evolved from functional to decorative. Designs expanded in line with interior trends of the time and incorporated movements such as Art Deco, Minimalist, as well as a revival of older period styles including Tudor and Georgian. Today you can get a wide range of styles and finishes with a new door. You can even get a keyless entry lock to open your door without a traditional key.

Modern Door Knobs

The Typical design features of a doorknob today include:

  1. No sharp edges or ridges,
  2. A shape that is easily grasped or turned
  3.  A textured finish or non-slip coating on knob to improve grip
  4. A shaft long enough to fit your hand behind the knob

When it comes to home improvement, investing in new windows, siding, and doors can significantly enhance the aesthetics, energy efficiency, and overall functionality of your living space. These crucial components of your home play a vital role in protecting you from the elements, ensuring security, and creating a welcoming atmosphere. In this article, we explore the numerous benefits that arise from upgrading your windows, siding, and doors, demonstrating how these improvements can transform your home into a more comfortable, stylish, and energy-efficient haven.

Enhanced Energy Efficiency

One of the most significant advantages of installing new windows, siding, and doors is the substantial improvement in energy efficiency. Outdated or poorly insulated components can contribute to significant energy loss, leading to higher utility bills and a less comfortable living environment. Modern windows, siding, and doors are designed with advanced materials and technologies that provide better insulation, effectively reducing drafts and preventing heat transfer. This enhanced energy efficiency not only reduces your carbon footprint but also helps you save money on heating and cooling costs year-round.

Improved Comfort and Insulation

Old and deteriorating windows, siding, and doors can allow outside noise, drafts, and temperature fluctuations to permeate your home. Upgrading to new, high-quality materials will greatly improve your comfort levels by minimizing unwanted noise, maintaining consistent indoor temperatures, and preventing air leaks. Additionally, advanced window designs with multiple panes, Low-E coatings, and gas-filled chambers provide superior insulation, creating a more comfortable living environment throughout the year.

Increased Natural Light and Aesthetic Appeal

New windows, siding, and doors can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home. By choosing modern window designs that maximize natural light, you can create a bright and inviting space. Additionally, stylish and well-maintained siding and doors can transform the exterior of your home, boosting its curb appeal and leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

Enhanced Security and Safety

Windows, siding, and doors are key elements in protecting your home from intruders and external threats. Outdated or damaged components can compromise the security of your property. By installing new windows with sturdy frames, and advanced locking mechanisms, you can significantly deter potential break-ins and ensure the safety of your family and belongings. Upgrading to durable and robust doors, along with reinforced siding, can provide an additional layer of security against the outside elements.

Reduced Maintenance and Longevity

Older windows, siding, and doors often require frequent maintenance and repairs to keep them functional and aesthetically pleasing. By investing in new, high-quality materials, you can minimize the need for ongoing maintenance and enjoy long-lasting durability. Modern window frames, sidings, and doors are often constructed from low-maintenance materials like vinyl, fiberglass, or cedar ridge, which resist rotting, warping, and fading. This means less time and money spent on repairs and refinishing, allowing you to focus on other aspects of homeownership.

Common Myths About Window and Door Replacement

Don’t believe all the myths you hear about Window and Door Replacement. When it comes to windows and doors, there are a ton of misconceptions out there. In today’s article we’ll debunk some of the most common misconceptions about these types of replacements, and maybe even give you some great information on your own home improvement projects moving forward.

Myth #1

Replacing Windows and Doors will cost me more money than it will save.

We’ve all heard people say, “It wouldn’t be worth it financially in the long run to replace my windows and doors.” So they spend years putting up with old windows and doors which don’t function, are cracked, and are basically letting in all the air from outside. While it is true that replacing your windows and doors does require an initial investment, it is a valuable investment to your home in the long-term. Did you know that out of date windows and doors account for 25%-40% of energy loss in a home. They could be costing you way more than you even realize. That’s a scary number when you consider how much you run your AC in the Summer and furnace in the Winter.  New Windows and Doors are virtually maintenance free too so you won’t have to upkeep them like other items in your home.

Myth # 2

Repairing Is Better Than Replacing

There are a lot of people out there who think that repairing is the way to go. This doesn’t actually give you the energy efficiency you’re hoping for in the long run. It may look different, and it may even feel different too, but lurking underneath those superficial changes is still an old, inefficient structure. Opting for new, modern, high-performance, and technologically sound windows and doors not only offers you the cosmetic look you desire, it actually saves you money in the long run. Efficient, state of the art products like the ones at Conservation Construction give you a relief from your high energy bills. Our Windows and Doors can save you up to 40% off your total energy costs.

Myth #3

All Windows and Doors Are Created Equally

So not true! There are all sorts of different types of windows and doors, and each one has its own unique benefits and drawbacks. For example, double-pane windows are much more energy efficient than single-pane windows, but they're also more expensive. Fiberglass and Steel Entry Doors give you better energy efficiency than Wood Doors. New Entry Doors can come in a wide variety of styles, too. So, you'll need to decide what's most important to you before you choose which type of window or door to buy.

Myth #4

Anyone can install Windows and Doors.

This is another myth that is simply not true. Energy Efficient Windows and Doors are not efficient unless they are installed by professionals who know what they are doing. At Conservation Construction have the decades of experience needed to get your job done the right way the first time. This means your windows will be providing optimum energy efficiency and protection against the outside from the first day they are installed and for decades after that.

Benefits Of Pet Doors

Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” I think in America our pets are treated so incredibly well. Now, you can treat you and your pet even better when you get a front door with a pet door attached! Keep reading to learn all of the benefits of a front door with a pet door included.

Which Doors Come With These Attachments?

Conservation Construction has carefully selected entry and patio doggie doors that provide easy indoor/outdoor access for your pets while maintaining maximum energy efficiency. All of these doors are manufactured in the USA and can be customized to your pets size, and the functionality you are looking for.

Safety That A Pet Door Provides Your Best Friend

Front Doors with pet attachments allow pet to escape from danger inside the house such as a fire or dangerous intruder. In addition, it allows pet to escape from danger outside such as unpredictable weather. Both of these are things to consider when thinking about getting a new front door with a pet attachment. These pet doors can be installed on our fiberglass, steel entry doors, and hinged patio doors for a number of styles.

A Pet Door Will Make Life Better For You As Well

You won’t have scratches on your front doors or patio doors from you pet trying to get out when nobody is home. Pets will have less “accidents” inside if these doors are installed. Furthermore, you don’t have to get up and down every time a pet needs to be let in or out. They can let themselves in and out. You can leave the house knowing that you don’t have to return right away because your pets can let themselves out! Finally, your dog may bark less if he can let himself out!

Safety & Durability Benefits

These doggie doors feature a solid frame designed for long-term, frequent use by active pets. The flap is magnetic to seal properly! It provides UV sun protection and weather-stripping seals the door tight for protection from the elements. Additionally, a slide-in closing panel adds security to the home.

Energy Efficiency

The great thing about pet doors is that they don’t drag down the overall efficiency of a door. They are made to keep the door just as energy efficient as it would be with no pet door. Our doors on average can bring a home’s energy costs down by up to  40%. How cool is that?

In today’s article we’re covering storm doors today. You could save your house and yourself from a lot of unnecessary stress if you have the proper storm door in place. You must be asking right now, what is a storm door? How does it protect me against the outside, and why should I invest my hard earned dollars on this specific type of door? The Importance Of Storm Doors

What is a storm door?

A storm door is typically a second outer door commonly installed for the protection of bad weather and allows ventilation in common weather. Storm doors typically have interchangeable glass and screen panels which are customizable to fit many different shapes and sizes. In good weather the main door can be kept open while allowing ventilation while also keeping the bugs out. Storm doors have additional locks in place for a more secure space while still allowing the beautiful views and sun from outside.

Better Protection

Secondly this additional door may also protect homes which experience extreme weather added. This added door gives you better insulation and protection from these storms. Storm doors provide protection for your main entry door from rain, ice, snow, and wind. Another perk to these doors is that they add a layer of insulation and protection against air leaks. Storm doors can create a pocket of insulation that keeps warm air in and cold air out for even more energy efficiency.

At Conservation Construction, we have several types of storm doors in different styles and colors..

Specifics

These storm doors protect your front door or back doors from damage during harsh weather. The handle sets for our exterior doors are completely customizable too. We have

  1. Spectrum Series storm doors which bring you smooth functionality, beauty, and durability.
  2. Decorator storm doors look stylish and protect your home better than other storm doors on the market.
  3.  Deluxe storm doors which offer additional light and ventilation.
  4.  Duraguard storm doors which are made with stainless steel screening to provide comfort for your family.
  5. Superview storm doors which offer a full view door completely constructed for style and energy efficiency.

All of these options offer you a different set of benefits. Think carefully about what you want out of your storm door to ensure you get just the right fit for your home. These work together with your front door to provide the ultimate protection against the outside elements.

Perfect For Colorado

There are many pros to having a storm door in Colorado, the biggest being protection against cold and snow (which I’ve mentioned above). When extreme weather hits it is best to have additional protection for your entrances to keep your home sealed and secure. All of our ProVia storm doors are available for use in the Impact shield regions.

So by this time in the article you should now have a better understanding of what exactly Storm Doors are, so let’s go over the pros to adding a storm door to your home one last time to really drive the point home.

What Are The Most Popular Front Door Colors?

I’m not speaking from personal experience here, but I wish I was. As a resident living in an HOA controlled community I don’t really get a choice what I want my front door color to be. The HOA regulates my front door color for me. But for those of you out there who are wondering what front door color to choose, keep reading to learn more. Maybe you'll want to choose one of these popular front door colors, and maybe you’ll want to pick something more unique.

Red

Red front doors have been a popular choice for centuries. Back in the day, red doors were used to ward off ghosts and evil spirits. The tradition of bright color doors came during the Victorian era. Irish civilians were ordered to paint their front doors black in honor of Queen Victoria passing. Instead, in an act of rebellion, they paint them bright colors like red. In today’s world.  Regardless of the shade, red is a widely popular front door color that can make an otherwise bland exterior pop. People who choose a red front door can expect to have a bold porch with eye-catching flare.

Blue

Blue doors too are an extremely popular choice. They have a more subtle beauty than the bold red doors. There are all sorts of shades of blue, some people opt for a darker deeper blue, while others may go with a brighter lighter shade. It really depends on the colors of your house and what is the best fit for you.  A blue front door may symbolize prosperity and abundance, and the darker you go the more a blue door can project a sense of tranquility, peace and elegance.

Green

Green is another popular front door color. Often used to represent growth, green is a natural choice to pay homage to nature and the world outside your front door. It is one of the cool tones which have been known to promote feelings of calmness. Greens, blues, browns, and other tones that appear together in nature will also work well on your house. Using natural colors has the added bonus of making your home look like it belongs in the landscape.

Read Wood Look

One of our most popular styles at Conservation Construction is the “Real Wood” look. Old wood doors are outdated and don’t provide the necessary energy efficiency you need. That’s why you can get the look and feel of a traditional wood door but it’s made of fiberglass. This ensures that you get ultimate beauty and protection. Depending on the shade, brown can mean a warm and reliable home. We have two separate doors Signet and Heritage that both resemble real wood, but can reduce your energy costs and protect your home better.

While choosing the right look, explore Where Homes Lose Energy Most to make sure your entry upgrades also improve efficiency.

In the door world every part of the door is important, especially when it comes to front doors. Each part of a front door acts as a barrier to keep out bad elements and keep your door energy efficient. In today’s article we’re talking about door parts. So keep reading to learn some fascinating parts about doors! learn door terms

Bottom Sweeps

Door Bottom Sweeps are used to seal the gap at the bottom of your door to prevent infiltration of sound, light, drafts, insects, moisture, smoke or fire. The better the bottom sweep the higher r-value the door will have. The higher the r- value the more energy efficient the door is. learn door term

Embossing

Embossing is the part of the door which is carved, molded or stamped inside the door itself to add a unique design. Conservation Construction front doors come with hundreds of embossing options to choose from. Generally, embossing is the process most often employed to attract attention or convey a high quality textural contrast in relation to the surrounding area of the door. Choose an embossing for your door that fits your style the best.

Hardware

The function of your door hardware refers to what mechanisms are used and how they operate in your hardware. Door hardware is where the lock engages and handles twist to operate the door. You can get traditional key lock systems or new push button locks which open by keypad. Door hinges are also part of the hardware which are made of two metal plates that are attached together with a removable pin. We have multiple finish options for our front door locks to satisfy anyone’s personal preference. learn door term

Seal

The seal of the door refers to various types of gaskets used on door or door frames to prevent in-leakage of outside air by creating airtight connections between door and frame. Our doors are 43% thicker than other front doors and we use double seal technology to ensure ultimate protection from outside elements.

Core

Solid core doors are filled as opposed to old doors which used to be hollow. We engineered a channel in the side rails and header of the door to allow for a larger energy efficient polyurethane core. This is just one of the multiple reasons new doors are so much more energy efficient than old wood doors.

Finish

Finish refers to the paint on a door. New doors, like the ones we sell at Conservation Construction, come in a multitude of colors. Our doors come with a durafuse finish; this finishing system yields unprecedented finish durability. Normal everyday wear and tear is a thing of the past. Your door should look just as good in 10 years as the day we installed it. It’ll be just as energy efficient too!

Happy Monday. This month, we thought we'd inform you about everything Entry Door related. So we're starting today by talking about our amazing Front Door Sidelight Combos. Let's get started!

You may be asking yourself what exactly is a Sidelight? I didn't know the answer to this until I started working for Conservation Construction myself. Well give you a couple examples through pictures of what a Sidelight looks like here before we go on to talk about what they are.

A sidelight in a building is a window, usually with a vertical emphasis, that flanks a door or a larger window. Sidelights are narrow, usually stationary and found immediately adjacent to doorways.

This kind of doorway can add natural light into your home. It is also another huge way to add style and expression to your entryway. You can pick from different glass options that make your door totally unique.

With this you'll add a ton of curb appeal to your home while adding equity back into your house during the process. Not to mention that even with Sidelight additions, your home door will be energy efficient because of the way the door is engineered. This door will make drafts a thing of the past.

Energy Efficiency

Our entire line of entry doors are some of the most energy efficient on the market today. They can save the average homeowner up to 40% off their current energy bills. In addition, they are strong, durable, and backed by lifetime warranties. So these doors laugh in the face of everyday wear and tear. In fact, they should look the same in 20 years as the day we installed the door.

Sidelights Are Strong And Durable Too

You'll feel safe knowing that sidelights are just as strong and durable as the door itself. So not only will you be getting a streamlined beautiful door it will hold up over time too.

     Measured and installed to perfection

Finally, our expert installers have the experience to install your door correctly the first time. With decades installing doors they know how to get the job done efficiently and effectively. I don't have to tell you that a properly installed door will give you the best protection and energy efficiency. A poorly installed door will give you neither.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a totally unique looking door that is energy efficient and adds curb appeal we implore you to consider a new front door with Sidelight. You'll get more natural light in your home and this may cause you to be more sunny in the process yourself.

Gaps In Door

If you’ve noticed that your door has gaps anywhere, it may be time to replace your door. With big gaps in the door not only can outside air blow in and reduce your energy efficiency, but it can also let in bugs unnecessarily. Not to mention big gaps indicate the door is old and they’re ugly to look out.  Old doors can reduce your energy efficiency by up to 40%. Don’t keep paying for the energy to get swept out under your door. Upgrade your front door now so that you can stop the energy from escaping.

Old Wood

Many old doors which are decades old were made out of wood. This was the material of choice back in the day, but in today’s world fiberglass and steel are preferred over wood because they are more energy efficient. Our fiberglass and steel doors are insulated and sealed. This means they prevent air infiltration and harsh heat from getting inside your home. You’ll get more stable room temperatures all year long.

Scratches

If you’ve noticed big scratches or chips in your front door it may also be an indication that you need to replace your front door. New front doors have exceptional scratch and dent resistance. You just can’t go wrong getting a new front door when everyday wear and tear is a thing of the past. It’ll look as good in 10 years as the day we installed it.

Out Of Date Locks

Many people out there may simply think it’s time to get a new lock if the door isn’t locking correctly. In some cases though it could be malfunctioning because the door is sitting on the hinges wrong. If this is the case, you should consider getting a new door asap. Just changing the locks doesn’t change how compromised the door is. Our expert installers have decades of experience installing the door correctly. They’ll get your project done right the first time and in an efficient manner. In addition, you can choose from our top-notch line of locks which will protect your home better than ever before. Why Fiberglass Doors Are Superior

Today’s article is like a giant venn diagram for Front Doors or Exterior Doors. We’ll be comparing two of the most popular doors on the market today Wood and Fiberglass. After the article you should have a better understanding of the best door for your home, and which type of door material will hold up over time.

Fiberglass is made of glass similar to windows or the drinking glasses in the kitchen. However, although this glass is heated until it is molten like any other household glass item, it’s the next step that makes it different. It’s then forced through superfine holes, creating glass filaments that are very thin. These threads can then be woven into larger swatches of material. For some applications, it is important for the glass fibers to have fewer impurities, which involves additional steps in the manufacturing process.

Coatings

Different resins may then be added to fiberglass once it is woven together to give it added strength, as well as allow it to be molded into various shapes (like Doors!) It’s for these reasons that Fiberglass Doors like our Signet Door, Embarq Door, and Heritage door, are way more energy efficient than standard doors on the market. This is because fiberglass expands with heat just enough that it doesn’t crack or warp. Fiberglass doors stand strong against extreme heat and cold giving you a thermal barrier and more stable temperatures all year round. Finally, all of our Fiberglass Doors are filled on the inside with a specialized foam which is sprayed into every nook and cranny to ensure the door stays energy efficient for life. This foam too gives the door extreme air infiltration protection. It’s all these things that makes our doors energy star rated.

Since the material itself is stronger than wood it maintains its shape and seal. It holds up better than other doors to normal wear. It doesn’t scratch, dents or dings easily. Fiberglass does this all while giving your home more security.

Real Wood Look

This is the main reason customers choose our Fiberglass Doors to begin with. The embossed wood-grain is an astonishingly accurate representation of real wood. Structurally, the Signet fiberglass door is far superior to traditional fiberglass doors. The hinge and strike stiles are a robust 25⁄8" and 41⁄4" respectively. They are dovetailed to the top and bottom rails forming an integrated frame, ensuring unmatched strength and durability.

The storm over the past weekend was a doozy. We all know what it’s like to live in Colorado. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s snowing. Heck, it could even be sunny and snowing at the same time. In Colorado you need a different kind of window, door and siding. Because our weather is so bipolar these products need to be able to withstand the harshest conditions. That’s why at Conservation Construction we’ve engineered products that last a lifetime in these conditions. Keep reading to learn more.

Windows

Our windows are unique in that we not only manufacture them in Colorado so they are made in our specific climate, but they were designed by a native Coloradan to ensure that they stand up against the harshest conditions. Our windows don't crack, warp, or leak. That’s because of all the specific things we put into the window including;

Platinum Elite Spacers

Easy Clean Coating

Low-E Glass Coating

Custom Bottom Drains

Custom Locks

Foam Filled Frames

All of these things work together to give you windows that block the harsh UV rays from entering your home, stabilize temperatures inside, keep furniture from bleaching, lower energy costs and so much more. If you are in need of new windows why not go with the kind that was made and manufactured for the Colorado weather? Go with a Window from Conservation Construction.

Doors

Additionally, most people don’t realize that up to 40% of there energy costs could be escaping through their front door alone. Drafts that come in under the door can get your pocketbook into serious trouble, especially in these cold conditions. Even a little bit of a draft constantly blowing into your home can keep your furnace running 24/7. New entry doors can save you so much on your energy costs. Not to mention, they are durable and safe. Their color stay technology means that everyday wear and tear doesn’t affect them. You can even get a touchless lock to ensure you never get locked out of the house again.

Siding

Perhaps the biggest energy suck of your entire home is old siding. Old siding doesn’t just drag down the look of a home, it makes your home more susceptible to things like mold, drafts, and critters. New siding can give you gorgeous vibrant color and lower energy costs for life. This means not only will you never have to paint again, you’ll get a significantly reduced energy bill for the rest of the time you own the home. Here at Conservation Construction we sell Cedar Ridge, James Hardie, Vinyl, and Steel Siding to meet each person's individual needs. Finally, all of our sidings are extremely impact resistant. This means even in a blizzard they will keep you safe from the storm.

Lifetime Warranties

It’s not even a joke! We do give lifetime limited warranties for all of our products! This includes sliding glass doors which we haven’t even mentioned yet. This means whatever happens we’ll have you covered under the warranty.

Are you looking for a new front door for your home? You couldn’t ask for a better material than Fiberglass. In today’s article we’ll go over all the benefits of fiberglass doors and why you might consider buying one for your next front door. Keep reading to learn more about these extraordinary doors.

Durability

Fiberglass doors are pretty much unmatched for durability. They don’t warp, crack, rot or rust. This is because of the way they are engineered. They are able to withstand robust temperature shifts including; harsh sun rays, rain, and wind. They aren’t susceptible to corrosion or insect infestation either. In fact, Fiberglass doors are extensively impact-tested for wind, and unlike wood and steel doors, they hold up to hurricane-equivalent wind strength. Their durability in these harsh conditions is why we trust them above all other materials. This is just one of the reasons you can also trust these doors if you choose to go with fiberglass as an optimal option for your home.

Energy Efficiency

These doors are extremely energy efficient. Fiberglass is used for energy efficiency because it has low levels of conductivity without the need for thermal breaks. Fiberglass door frames allow less heat and cold to travel through the frame material itself. So whether it’s summer or winter or a huge storm is flying by, you’ll get more stable room temperatures all year round. In fact, our doors have been known to save the average person up to 40% off their energy costs.

Color Stay Technology

We use a special durafuse finishing system which makes the paint adhere to the door better than ever before. This means you’ll get unparalleled finish durability and vibrancy for the life of the door. So normal wear and tear like dents and scratches are a thing of the past. Our line of fiberglass doors make it possible to have the look and feel of real wood, or you can choose from an array of colors.

Safe

Fiberglass doors are extremely safe as well. The 2 5⁄8" finger-jointed 3-ply hardwood hinge provides superior structural integrity. Our doors are dovetailed and glued at each side to ensure a structurally solid and integrated frames. We include custom hardware to match. The fiberglass doors we sell at Conservation Construction have a solid strike plate for structural integrity as well.

Lifetime Warranties

In addition to all of their amazing properties, our doors come with lifetime warranties. This is to ensure their longevity. If anything ever goes wrong with the door we have it covered under the warranty. You can’t find a better warranty on the market today.

Efficient Windows, Doors, and Siding Can Reduce

Your Carbon Footprint

In a world where everybody is getting more environmentally conscious it’s good to know that companies like Conservation Construction make products that save energy and can help the environment. In today’s world you can buy hybrid cars, use less plastic, and even get windows which help with your energy costs and reduce greenhouse emissions. Let’s go over some of the ways windows, siding and doors are changing the world . . .

Not only do energy efficient products save you a ton of money on your energy bills, they also help the world. With energy efficient products you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from your home and from the power plants. If everybody were to jump on board and get new windows we could reduce the world’s overall carbon footprint.

Windows

Switching to new windows alone can reduce the annual household’s carbon footprint by up to 12% compared to non-energy efficient products. In addition, energy efficient windows can save between 246-2001 pounds of CO2 a year (equivalent to 13 to 102 gallons of gasoline). On top of helping out our environment, new windows can save you anywhere between 126$ to 465$ a year on energy costs - which will also make you a happier person.

Siding

Siding replacement is a very eco-friendly option. Siding not only reduces your carbon footprint by creating a better energy efficiency for your home, some siding like Vinyl can be installed over most existing exterior substrates to reduce waste. Fiber Cement Siding, which is also available through Conservation Construction, is one of the most Eco-Friendly siding types on the market today. Fiber cement siding emits fewer toxins when destroyed and is made from natural materials like wood-pulp and sand.

Entry Doors & Patio Doors

New energy efficient entry doors and patio doors work the same way as new windows and siding. Doors from Conservation Construction can reduce your energy costs by up to 40%. That’s a huge saving on your energy bill and can help reduce even more carbon emissions.

Energy Efficient Products

Energy Efficient products are always on top ten lists for ways to reduce your carbon footprint. If you have energy efficient exteriors like siding, windows, and new doors this will prevent energy from escaping your home and reduce your overall need to turn up and down the thermostat.

Most people don’t think a new front door could save them very much in energy costs, but we’re here to tell you that is completely wrong. A new door, although looking completely unassuming, does give you tremendous energy savings. That’s because new front doors are made of steel or fiberglass. These materials insulate and protect better than any old wood doors which gives them the ability to protect your home optimally.

Money Saving Front Doors

The fact that these exterior doors save you money off home energy is exactly what you want in type of door. Energy efficient doors are a part of the future technology, and wood doors are a thing of the past. How do these doors save energy so easily. It’s our tight door seals, computer driven foam insulation process, custom bottom sweeps, insulated door frames, and storm door pairings that make these doors prevent energy loss.

Average Savings

Our Fiberglass or Steel New Entry Doors can save the average homeowner up to 35% off their total energy bills. This means the door has no thermal breaks. In fact, our Embarq Door is the most energy efficient door on the market today even winning energy stars partner of the year two years running. Pair these doors with our energy efficient windows or patio doors and you could save even more--like 40% off your entire energy bill. Wow!

Other Specialty Features

Other specialty features we place in the door provide even more efficiency than any other standard fiberglass or steel door on the market today. These features include;

With such unparalleled energy efficiency on the market today, why would you choose a different new front door than one you could get from Conservation Construction?

More Stable Room Temperatures

In addition to saving you money, new entry doors can give you more stable inside temperatures all year round. We don’t notice just how much outside air gets in through the cracks with an old entry door. Old weather stripping doesn’t stop breezes from entering your home and dragging down energy efficiency. Repairing the door simply masks the problem for a while. The only way to get true energy savings is to replace the entire door and frame altogether. You won’t get pesky breezes with a new front door. You’ll get stable room temperatures all year around and notice your furnace/AC come on less and less.

Conclusions

Now that you know the savings a new entry door could give you, we bet you’ll think twice before you just dismiss your current entry door. Replacing your old entry door with a new fiberglass door or steel door could save you a significant amount of money off your energy costs.  In fact, you could even jump for joy with all the money you’ll save. Okay, this may seem like a pretty straight forward article. You might even be thinking, who doesn’t know the differences between a front door and a patio door? But let me tell you the answers aren’t always as easy with these doors as one might think. Let’s start with the definition for one . . .

Front Door: the main entrance to a house.

Patio Doors : doors to an area adjoining a house, esp one that is paved and used for outdoor activities

Difference In Materials

We also happen to know here at Conservation Construction that another main difference of front doors vs patio doors is their makeup. Most front Doors are made of steel or fiberglass, while most patio doors are made of high efficiency glass with vinyl framing components. These are separate materials for several reasons. Patio Doors tend to have big glass to give you clear views to the outdoors. While Front Doors, although they can have glass embedded in the door or sidelights, are not one solid piece of glass.

20 Gauge Steel

The reason why front doors are typically made out of a stronger material such as fiberglass or steel is because they need to have strength against forced entry. That’s why our doors have a 20 Gauge Steel plate which gives you 49% more galvanized steel than a standard 24 Gauge Door. This kind of door will also protect the inside of your home from the outside elements to prevent air infiltration too.

Energy Efficient Glass

The biggest difference is the two doors is that one door, patio doors, are usually made up of glass and a vinyl frame. That’s why it is important for this glass and vinyl frame to have extreme energy efficiency. That’s because these doors protect your home from harsh sunlight and cold winds. At Conservation Construction we use our unique  Glass In all of our windows, and patio doors to ensure energy efficiency. Our glass is extraordinary because it utilizes Low-E Glass Coating and Easy Clean Glass Coating. Not only will your door be able to stop the harmful UV rays from entering your home, but it will keep the inside of your home a more stable room temperature all year round.

Hardware

The last and major difference between front doors and patio doors is the hardware. Front Doors tend to have knobs and handles while patio doors tend to have just handles. This doesn’t mean that both handles and knobs are not super safe. All of our door hardware is super safe.

Front Doors and Patio Doors Compliment Each Other

To have a truly energy efficient house however, it is good to have products that work with each other instead of against each other. If you have both a new front door and a new sliding glass door they create a barrier to create energy savings. This prevents air infiltration from the outside to create a complete energy efficient system for your house. Pair these products with new windows, let me tell you you could reduce your energy costs by a giant proportion.

The short answer is yes! Front Door Keypads are completely safe. Let’s get into the specifics as to why they are so safe.

Never Get Locked Out Of Your House Again

Keypads are no different than having a physical key. Instead of having to have the physical key however they work on batteries, and can even be controlled by your phone. This makes them even more convenient than a physical key because you will never get locked out of your house again, that is, unless you forget your secure pass code. Another great thing about keyless door pads is that they can be programmed with multiple different combinations so they are even more secure. You can even give your friends or family a one time pass code to use while you’re out of town. They can enter your home to check on it without having to give them a spare key.

These Deadbolts Include;

Deadbolts Are Strong & Durable

To help homeowners make informed decisions about which hardware is best for their home, the BHMA created a set of standards specific to residential door hardware. This includes three categories - Security, Durability and Finish – with rigid criteria for testing hardware to ensure it meets either a C (good), B (better) or A (best) grade in each category. Most Schlage products (which we use on our front doors) receive a AAA, which means they have received the best possible grades in Security, Durability and Finish.

This means that all of our products, whether mechanical or electronic, run through all kinds of heavy-duty, intense testing procedures – including hitting it with a sledgehammer really hard. So regardless of what kind of lock you buy, you know you’ll be getting a product that has been tested against the rigorous demands of daily usage. All of our keyless entry locks have received an A rating as well.

Know Who Is Coming And Going And When

Also, major strides have been made in electronic security since then, making hacks much more difficult to pull off. Blunt-force attacks at your home’s entry points are much more effective than sophisticated electronic methods anyway. The rising popularity of home security systems is putting a dent in traditional break-ins as well, however, making smart locks that integrate with home security systems an increasingly effective solution. Together, they add a layer of electronic security to your home, that allows you to keep better track of who’s coming and going. You don’t have to acquire a smart lock either if you’re worried about hacks because we provide multiple options for keyless locks that aren’t connected to Bluetooth or the internet so they can only be accessed by using the code.

The Simplicity Of Never Having To Pay To Change The Locks

You won't worry if you code gets compromised, because you can just re-code it.  Not only is this a hassle and time consuming, you’re spending more money you don’t need to spend. With a keyless lock, you can just simply erase the previous code and enter a new one. It's like you have a brand new lock on your home within minutes.

To learn more about enhancing your entryway design, read our blog, What Are Front Door Sidelights?, and see how they can add both style and natural light to your home.

Final Thoughts

So to wrap up, remember that keyless entry doors are no less safe than any other locks on the market today. They may even help save you time and money in the future. You can recode them yourself and you’d never have to pay to rekey the door again. Keyless locks are rigorously tested to high standards for durability and safety.  Think about getting a new entry door and locks set today by visiting us online for your free quote.

You may hear the term Front Door Sidelights but do you actually know what it means? If you do know what this means you are ahead of the curve. When I was first learning about new doors I had no idea what Sidelights were. After a bit of research I am now an expert on Sidelights and you can be too. Just read the article and you’ll be well informed too.

To make things simple let’s first define what Sidelights are with a brief summary . . .

A sidelight in a building is a window, usually with a vertical emphasis, that flanks a door or a larger window. Sidelights are narrow, usually stationary and found immediately adjacent doorways.

The actual dictionary definition of a sidelight is: a narrow window or pane of glass set alongside a door or larger window.

So you see sidelights are not so tricky to understand. They are actually quite easy to understand on the whole. They are just vertical windows placed on the side of doors. There are many benefits to sidelights in the home which we’ll discuss in the rest of the article.

Natural Light

Sidelights are a great way to bring natural light into a space when there is little outdoor light available. We’re not saying they are huge windows which will add tons of sunshine, but they do allow in enough light to brighten the doorway and its surrounding areas. There are other benefits as well like being able to see who comes knocking at your door. Not to mention these windows are great for children and pets because they provide visibility along with safety.

Energy Efficient

Sidelights do not make your home any less energy efficient. In fact, the door and sidelights were engineered for energy efficiency and durability. Our entry doors are 2.5’’ thick, have a dual perimeter seal, insulation channels, and custom bottom sweeps. Not to mention the glass inside the doors and sidelights are tempered. Our entire line of entry doors are the most energy efficient on the market today even winning energy star partner of the year for efficiency.

Aesthetically Pleasing

Exterior doors don’t have to be plain like they used to be. Door Styles with Sidelights can add a pop of personality and color to any front door. You get to design the door from the ground up and the sidelight styles too. You can even choose from our line of custom stained glass to get an even more custom look. Check out this picture below to see how amazing sidelights can look inside a door.

You can choose from hundreds of options like this to make your sidelight door combination totally unique and you.

In Conclusion, sidelights are small windows on the side of a door that add style and natural light into a home. You can get sidelight styles with any new Conservation Construction door. Sidelights don't make our doors any less energy efficient. Get a free quote today! Thanks for reading.

We're in a new modern age where you don't actually need a key to get into your home. We're not even talking about a hidden key under the front door mat or inside some false rock. New locks don't require a key at all. Some of these technologies today still shock me, but this one seems like it's well overdue. I can't tell you how many times I ask my husband as we're leaving the house this exact question: "Do you have your keys?" If I had a keyless entry lock like some others do, i'd never have to ask this question. I'd also never worry about being locked out of my house again. I could always get in as long as I remembered the code.

Another huge benefit of keyless entry locks (which didn't occur to me until just recently) is that if you are going out of town anybody you trust with the code can check on your house--no spare key required. We had gone out of town earlier in the year and I wanted my friend to check on my house, but then I realized I didn't have a spare key for him to get inside. If I had a keyless entry lock then, he would have been able to check on the house and go inside no hassle. But since I didn't have this feature he could only check the perimeter of the property.

In some ways it makes me sad that in the future when I buy another house that I may not be handed over the keys at closing. They might just give me a piece of paper with a code.

Conservation Construction has plenty of keyless entry locks to choose from. They fit perfectly with all of our energy efficient door options.  With these doors and specialized locks you don't ever need to call a locksmith to change the locks because you can reprogram your keyless entry lock yourself. You'll still get superior protection and elegant designs too! Check out the designs of our keyless entry locks here.

Yes, this means one less key dangling from your key chain too. I know this isn't the biggest selling point, but it is a selling point nonetheless. I for one am always trying to reduce the number of keys on my key chain.

These keyless entry locks and doors also add more efficiency to your day. You won't have to fumble for your keys when you're trying to take the groceries inside your home. Some keyless locks even sink with your phone. You can tell the door to unlock/lock ahead of your arrival or departure. You can even check the app to see if your door remains locked.  Now that's technology that's working for you!

Writing this article I am reminded of an old episode of my favorite TV show, "Seinfeld." In this particular episode Jerry is standing outside of his apartment with the then person he is "Dating." Him and her pretend a "deranged serial killer" is running down the hall after them and he has to try to get the door open as fast as possible. "She yells out, "Hurry, Jerry, he's almost here!" In today's age with keyless entry locks I don't think this joke/scenario would be as funny, but it's no joke that you want your house protected and that's just what these locks do.

All of the doors we sell and provide have keyless entry lock options. You can check out these options here.

What are double hung front doors? They are doors like this picture below . . .

They're like French Patio Doors, but instead of being in the back of the house they are in the front as entry doors. These entry doors are beautiful, regal, and open wider to allow bigger breezes and ease of entry. Just because they are double front doors doesn't mean they don't protect and insulate just as well as any of the other front doors we sell.

Our front doors are made up of steel or fiberglass.  These materials are overall more energy efficient and stronger than it's wood counterparts. Most new front doors today are made of these materials. If you haven't switched out your door in the past 20+ years, you should change out your door ASAP if you haven't. Welcome to this Friday article. As we all wait in anticipation for the weekend you can distract yourself for about five minutes as you read today’s article on Entry Doors.

Most people don’t go out of their way to think about Entry Doors, yet everybody on the planet has a Front Door. Our Entry Door protects us by keeping out people we don’t want, and stopping weather from entering our home. It’s true we never think about the things that protect us because we’re too busy with other things. But I ask you now to really stop and think about your current front door in your home. Ask yourself one question: is it in good shape or not?

If it’s not, like mine was, it may be time to consider getting a new Front Door. Not only are new doors more beautiful, but they are much more functional too giving you more energy efficiency and better locks. You’ll be saving money off energy costs and be more protected. How cool is that?

The best part is that you can get an inswing or outswing Front Door nowadays depending on your needs. Why would you choose one over the other? The truth is that most entry doors are inswing door meaning they swing inside the home.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t benefits to choosing and outswing door. People who choose outswing doors may do so for several reasons. Outswing Entry Doors are great for areas with extreme weather. Our sister company Conservation Construction of Texas does this for areas near Denver with Hurricane threats. This way extreme winds and rain can’t blow any doors in they swing outward.

Outswing Front Doors are good for other reasons like saving space in a home. If you already have a cramped home you may choose a outswing door. These doors may offer wider views and better breezes because they can open wider to the outside than the inside. The final advantage is that an outswing door does protect better from the elements and may be even more energy efficient.  Most people don’t know this but most commercial building doors swing out because the door must open in the direction of the flow of people exiting the building in an emergency.

Remember in Colorado though that we do get a lot of snow and sometimes it’s a huge advantage here to have inswing doors. You don’t want to be stuck inside because your door can’t swing outward. This is just something to consider when choosing a Front Door.

Whichever swing you choose for your door you’ll be getting a door that is extremely durable. Each and every Entry Door we make at Conservation Construction was made to last a lifetime. We use revolutionary embossing and paint finishes to ensure scratch, crack, and dent resistance. Plus, you get to design the door from the ground up, and who doesn’t love that!

You may have asked yourself on more than one occasion how thick are entry doors? That, or, how thick is my current front door? Both of these questions lead to the inquiry of many other things like . . . How energy efficient is my front door? Or How thick does my entry door need to be to be energy efficient? All of these are great questions to ask when you first start looking for Entry Doors. The answer to these questions are always different though.

How Thick Are Entry Doors?

To answer the first question . . . How thick are entry doors? On average, a typical entry door is 1 3/4'' to 2'' wide. This is very standard for most doors across the US market. Although this width has been in place for quite some time Conservation Construction wanted to change average into extraordinary.

The Thickness Of A Conservation Construction Door

For those who choose Conservation Construction for their Front Doors they can expect one of the thickest doors on the market today. Our fiberglass doors are 43% thicker than typical front door to allow for more insulation and better protection, making our door 2.5" thick! How cool is that? Then we added a side rail and channels in the header of the door to allow for even more insulation. Dual perimeter seals allow for even less air infiltration. The results are that our doors are the most energy efficient doors on the market. All of this adds up to a thick door that is versatile and durable.

Other Advantages

Another huge advantage to the added width of our door is that we are able to fill it from top to bottom with a specialized foam. They've been foam filling doors for the past decade now once they discovered that these doors have a better U-Factor. U-Factor is the measure for which doors conduct non-solar heat flow. The lower the number the better. Our doors have a typical U-Factor of 0.19 or less! This means you'll truly be saving money off your energy costs and getting a door that protects your home from the outside elements. In fact, people who choose a Conservation Construction entry door can see a energy savings of up to 35% off their energy costs. Major changes to doors like this means that this will be the last door you'll ever have to purchase because it will be so darn durable.

Real Wood Look

This door won't just be insulating and save you money off energy efficiency, it'll look great too. New doors, although made of Fiberglass or Steel, can look exactly like real wood.  Our engineers wanted to give customer's choices when it comes to styles and options. That's why you pick what you want the door to look like, you choose the hardware, and you build the design of the door from the ground up.

In Conclusion

The typical US new entry door is 1 3/4'' to 2'' thick. The Conservation Construction doors are 2.5'' thick for better insulation, energy efficiency, and durability. Your door can look like real wood or you can choose a more modern front door look with Conservation Construction. Please comment below on what your favorite part of this article was! We all like to show off our home’s style, especially during certain seasons like fall. Who doesn’t love to see pumpkins sitting outside front doors reminding us that it’s the pumpkin spice time of the year? This season has all of my favorite things including; beautiful colors, spiced apple cider, candy, sitting next to the fireplace, crisp smells and so much more. So today, I’d thought we’d get a little nostalgic and try to evoke those feelings of home and comfort. You can do this simply by decorating your front door with the spirit of fall. Here are some quick and easy front door decor tips for fall.

The most obvious and easiest way to put fall on your porch is to grab a couple pumpkins from the grocery store and set them on your front porch. If you want to ramp it up a little you can always grab a few different sizes and layer them up.

These decorations are a great frame for the new legacy steel door too. Layering the pumpkins on top of each other and having different sizes like the picture creates dimension and visual interest to your front door. This is a sure fire way to get people to have that fall feeling when they enter your home keep them in awe.

The second easy tip is to get a front door mat that matches the season. I keep several different mats in my garage over the seasons and switch them out whenever it's appropriate. This not only helps welcome guests, but it also is a great way for them to feel encouraged to wipe their feet before they enter your home.

Our third tip is to place decorations around the door itself. Anything that draws the eyes in is a great way to make your guests feel comfortable from when they first step into your home. A welcome sign like in the picture above and a wreath on the door lets guests know you are happy to have them over. This puts people's minds at ease the second they walk through that door and into your home. In my book, this is a very good thing!

Don't be afraid to play around with layers and make your front door decor your own. It's this creative part of the process that makes decorating your home so much fun. You'll get that feeling of nostalgia yourself when you walk through your door.

They say that smell triggers the most memories. So my last pro tip is candles. I was always astounded walking into my friend's house when I was younger. As soon as you walked in the door the feeling of fall engulfed your senses, and that's because she always had a pumpkin or fall candle lit. The smell sat in the room and gave me a memories of Thanksgiving and hot apple cider. You can never go wrong with a nice candle. The best part about candles is that they pack a big punch for being so inexpensive.

We hope you've enjoyed today's article. Remember, decorating for fall should be an easy and fun experience. Don't be afraid to get creative because you and your guests will enjoy seeing these decorations. Finally, don't forget the candles and to spend a lot of quality time with your loved ones. We are only here once and the time we spend with family and friends is priceless. Happy Fall.

These threads can then can be woven into larger swatches of material. For some applications, it is important for the glass fibers to have fewer impurities, which involves additional steps in the manufacturing process.

In conclusion, Conservation Construction gives you plenty of door options in Fiberglass; our Heritage, Embarq or Signet door could be all a good fit for your home. These Fiberglass doors are strong and more energy efficient than real wood doors. If you want a true door that can stand up to wear, elements and everyday wear you should go with fiberglass over wood. Finally, we come to you with our free estimates! Which Projects Are Adding Back To Your House The Most?

Here we come like magic, trying to claim that we can tell you things that Wikipedia can’t tell you about home improvement and equity. It seems a bit unbelievable, right? As a writer of this particular blog it seemed a little outrageous to me too. That was until I realized that there are several things Wikipedia can’t tell you about Home Improvement & Equity. This includes how much particular project will give you back in equity.

A Kitchen Remodel can give you back 80% of the cost you put into the project that you spent remodeling. Windows were also high on value during resale gaining 80% of the total cost back. Both of these options are great ideas to think about before you sell your home, or even if you just want a better looking house! A remodel has been known to lift my spirits and give me renewed hope in my house. We encourage you to do weigh both money back and happiness it will give to you in your life, both are important factors here.

What Is the Difference Between HELOC and HEL and Financing

I don’t think wikipedia can tell you the difference between a HELOC (Home Equity Line Of Credit) and a HEL (Home Equity Loan).  The difference between the two is that HELOC gives you a limit kind of credit like a credit card. You can use a little now you can use a little later. A Home Equity Loan gives you a large lump sum all at once. Both may have a lower interest rates than a typical credit card. The average interest on Home equity loans and HELOCs are around 5% depending on credit score. That’s a ton of savings over a credit card. Financing is a great way to reduce interest rates as well. It too will give a limit to what you can spend, but it usually gives you a time period where you’ll get not interest at all. It’s at those times you can pay off the balance without paying interest at all. This is great for people looking for a ways to skip over interest. This is what sets financing apart from loans.

What Is Sweat Equity?

The definition of sweat equity is this :an interest or increased value in a property earned from labor toward upkeep or restoration. Sweat equity is only as good as the person who is doing the sweat equity. If you decide to do all the labor yourself, but don’t have the skill set, you could end up spending more. Small mistakes can add up to huge costs later. Sweat equity, if done correctly, can save a ton of money off labor. For small projects like painting it is a must. Instead of paying the average contractor 4k to paint your house, you can pocket that cost and get some sun in the process. At the very most you can try to rope your friends in and do it for the costs of a couple pizza’s and paint.

Tax Benefits

The benefits are great with HELs because if you use them to do remodeling projects. If you itemize your deductions you may be able to deduct the interest you paid on the home equity loan. We bet Wikipedia couldn’t tell you that! Some of these loans can give you as long as 20 years to pay back the loan which is great if you want to pay home renovations back slowly. A home equity loan is set for a one time set dollar amount. Determine how much your project will cost before applying for a loan. After you calculate the cost up, add 10%-15% more for overrun on costs as a precaution.

Using A Loan Or Financing Makes Sense For Home Improvements

Finally, using Financing, HELOCs, or HELs is a great way to get home improvement done based one everything above. Just remember the list below and you’ll be fine. The benefits of these types of loans include

  1. Lower Interest Rates to 0% interest for a period of time depending what you plan you choose.
  2. Tax Deductions/ benefits can bring down cost.
  3. Spreading payments over a long period of time to manage upfront cost.
  4. You’ll have comfort and equity put back into the home for a sale later.

We hope you all enjoyed this article. Comment below on what you would use financing for. Remember that we do several dream projects here at Conservation Construction including; windows, siding and doors.

Happy Monday! We hope all of you have had a great weekend. Let’s get this Monday started off right! That means talking about home improvement. Hopefully we can use this article to distract you from the Monday blues!

So there are several things that negatively affect curb appeal, but let’s start with what I would like to call the most egregious offender . . . That is giant plastic animals in the front yard. Okay, although I know some people admire these objects in their yard, unless it’s Christmas, let’s keep the fake animals off the yard and embrace the fact that we live in Colorado. You could potentially have real deer visiting your home instead. Not only could it negatively affect your curb appeal for potential buyers if you are selling, the plastic deers are cheesy. If you still plan on keeping your fake animals stick, with real wood. Remember plastic animals are just a big no no.

Secondly, the landscape on the outside of your home is a big thing to consider keeping in great condition. As a potential buyer I would look for houses which were well groomed and didn’t have a bunch of “Must Fix” items that needed to get taken care of before I even moved in. This includes; weeds, unkempt grass, or crumbling concrete paths. Think about it, some of the items on this list are not that hard to maintain yourself. Mowing the yard every couple weeks makes a huge difference. This alone could be the difference between an okay looking house to a phenomenal looking house.

Take a look when you are driving through certain neighborhoods and it’s easy to see which people take pride in their grass and which do not. Even simply trimming up shrubs so they are less unkempt looking is a great way to add curb appeal. A well put together outside of your home reflects that you have a well kept home inside too.

Thirdly, consider fixing stuff on the outside of your home. This is your siding, windows and front door. Let’s focus in on the main thing people see from far away which is your siding/house color. If your old siding is faded, warped or water logged a potential buyer can spot this a mile away. Simply putting a fresh coat of paint can solve some problems. But upgrading the siding has multiple benefits including; adding equity into the home so you can ask for a higher price when you sell your home, give your home a pop of color to stand out, and gives you the look and feel of a new home. This will too give potential buyers or guests a great first impression of your home. In addition, new siding can add insulation, protect better from weather and reduce noise and energy use. How cool is that?

Finally, Old windows can hold fog, can be cracked and can really drag down the appearance of the home. A new set of windows or front door can give you that extra homey touch that gives your house the X factor to stand out. Windows and doors add energy efficiency to a home, equity and can add additional curb appeal. All of these things can add up to big savings and equity for you!

In conclusion, it’s easy to upgrade your home’s curb appeal. You can just stick to basics, mowing, pulling weeds, and adding a pop of color in the form of paint, or you can replace by adding siding, windows or doors. Each and every choice gives you a ton of options when it comes to color, asking price, and overall curb appeal of your home. Keep up the good work on your home improvement projects and we’ll see you next time. We encourage you to comment below on what your dream "Curb Appeal" project would be.

It’s Hump Day! For those of you like me there is reason to celebrate mid week. It means we’re one step closer to the weekend! It also it means that we’ve made it through Monday. Seeing that it is Wednesday, we thought you all deserved to learn some tips on how to improve your home to get you over this hump and onto Thursday!

Happy Friday to all who have taken time out of their busy day to read this article. As it is Friday and not Monday there are a ton of reasons to celebrate including; the weekend, rest and relaxation, and hassle free living with new siding and doors.

I won’t hassle you with a heavy article today, instead, let’s take a walk down memory lane. Imagine the first time you purchased your home? Got it in your head? Whether it was a fixer upper or it was a new build I’m guessing you had extreme price in yourself, and in that piece of land you just acquired. You should. It’s an extreme accomplishment to have a house (this is coming from someone who lived with her parents most of her life, and is now admitting to that in this article). When I got my first home I felt like an adult for the first time ever. It’s a mix of emotions too. It’s kind of scary knowing that you’re responsible for the longevity of this house. You make the payments, you do the yard work, and for a first time homeowner that is a nerve-wracking place to be.

Still, I didn’t start to notice all the things wrong with the house until after I moved in. Isn’t that how the realtors want it to be, right? Hide and deflect any errors so that all you see is the big picture items in the house--i.e. Sunlight, kitchen, square footage, closet space, etc. That’s exactly what we saw. It wasn’t until after we moved in did we notice the leak under the sink and the faucet in the tub malfunctioning.

There are still items which I want to replace, but priority is put on longevity. We just got all new replacement windows. It’s literally changed the life of my house with how energy efficient they are. We encourage you to put emphasis on longevity of an item as well as its energy efficiency to

The facts are clear and their weird. So let’s go over some weird and interesting facts about doors today that might get you saying Hum!

Weird Facts Number 1:

Furthermore, the grandiose doors of many cathedrals are quite heavy and require several people to open them, so they have a much smaller door built in called a wicket door. The wicket door enables people to enter and exit with ease.
  2.  Most of the doors in Ireland are colorful. When Queen Victoria passed away there were orders to paint all the doors black for mourning. In rebellion some painted the doors colorful instead. It is joked that Ireland’s colorful doors are painted this color these days so that drunk
  3. family members can make their way back to the right home once the pub has closed. Alexander Graham Bell made this quote famous which says, "When one door closes another opens". It is still a saying today. The full phrase is "When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us." The quote is often interpreted as missing opportunities that are right in front of you.
  4. In mainstream Rabbinic Judaism, a mezuzah is affixed to the doorpost of Jewish homes to fulfill the mitzvah (Biblical commandment) to "write the words of God on the gates and doorposts of your house."

  7. Although it is difficult to provide an exact date of when door knobs first came into use, the first documentation of the invention of a door knob was in 1878 by African American inventor Osbourn Dorsey. The U.S. Patent Office received a submission made for improvements on a door-closing device made by Osbourn. Osbourn too invented the Doorstop the same year.
  8. The earliest known locking mechanisms were discovered by archaeologists in the mid-19th century at the Palace of Khorsabad in modern day Iraq. The rudimentary key and lock system dates back to 4000 B.C., when the area would have been the Mesopotamian kingdom of Assyria.

There are a lot of blogs out there on “Front Door Decor.”

These blogs offer a number of solutions for how to paint, decorate, or change out hardware to make your door look new.  Blogs like this are a great place to start when you are wanting to do your own home improvement project.

Beautiful bold colors are great for a fresh new look. Plants outside the home offer a more “Homey” feel too. However great these ideas are they are only as practical as your Front Door itself. No amount of paint or new hardware is going to make an old gaping door more straight. In addition no amount of beautiful flowers on your front porch will make the door more energy efficient.

The only way to get a more energy efficient door is to switch it out for a new door. This is especially true if you have an old door which is made out of wood. Nowadays most doors are made of Steel or Fiberglass. Old wood doors are truly a relic of the past and they aren’t very safe or energy efficient. As well, wood’s durability and finish wear out quite a bit quicker than Steel or Fiberglass.

If you are looking for a more stable door which stands the test of time, why not entertain the idea of a new Entry Door? This way once you pick the color you like you don’t have to paint the door yourself. It’ll come painted for you. Plus you’ll never ever have to paint it again! Happy official first day of spring! Now that we are finally transitioning from snow to warmth it is time to consider what things will give you the most versatility for the weather. Windows are great, but so is a phenomenal storm door.

If your front door is bare and has not a storm door in sight to protect it, it might be time to consider getting one. Just like a great relationship Entry Doors work best when they have a companion. Their companion is their Storm Door.

Spring is the ideal season for Storm Doors for several reasons, but one is its ability to keep your home safe while offering optimal views of the world outside. Keep your front door open while your storm door is locked. These storm doors come with the clearest glass that is also durable. Our storm doors are heavy duty for longevity. So you know you’ll be getting a door that will literally stand up to the test of time.

Conservation Construction, Storm Doors, New Storm Doors, Replacement Storm Doros

Another huge reason that Storm Doors are perfect for Spring is their ventilation properties. If you are not able to afford air conditioning (as is the case in my home) you may need to rely on opening windows and Storm Doors like this one below. Our unique storm doors are fantastic in that they have retractable screens and glass which can open to afford breezes in the home. These breezes are a great way to get air flowing during spring cleaning when the old stagnant air from winter has been stuck in the house.

A second huge benefit to this door is the protective screen in the doors. Screens and storm doors are perfect to protect your home from all those little buggies that seem to fly in when spring starts back up. We’re talking about Flies, Bees, Wasps, and even sometimes dragonflies. Not to mention these doors could prevent creepy crawlies from entering.

Our storm doors are measured to perfection and have a tight seal. Our custom bottom sweep makes it incredibly hard for bugs to get inside your house. This is reason to celebrate for all the arachnophobes people out there like me (it is said that 30% of all people are afraid of spiders).

Thirdly there are many ways to customize this door. You can get a window that opens from the top or bottom. Order yours with a specialized doggy door built right into the door. For pet lovers out there, this gives you even more convenience.  Your dog or cat will be able to let themselves in and out of the house. You will stop having to get up every hour of the day. You can stay comfortable wherever you are--even when you are out of the house. How amazing is that?

In Addition, Storm Doors can protect your front entry door from being hit by “April Showers” as they come in. Protect your home from storms all year round.  They are perfect to prevent air infiltration during strong winds. This is great news for us who live in Colorado and all the bipolar weather we get all year round.

Finally, new hardware on these doors makes them super safe and secure not just from storms, but from break ins. If you lock both your entry door and storm door you have two layers of protection for you home. This way you’ll feel comfortable whether you’re at home or away.

In conclusion, storm doors are great for spring because of their;

  1. Ventilation Properties
  2. Optimal Views
  3. Customizations
  4. Safety
  5. Weather Resistance/Protection
