Aluminum Windows Are Not Energy Efficient

You may think those old aluminum windows you have still function, so what’s the point of getting new ones? Sure they are made of metal frames, but why spend the money to get new windows? Those old windows could be costing you a lot more than you know in energy costs than you might want to admit.

Today’s article I’ll be discussing my experience with old aluminum windows. Albeit my old windows wouldn’t even open. They were original to the house which was built in the 1980’s.  Practically every window in the house was cracked, holy, or non functional. I could literally not even get the windows open without my husband’s help because they required so much force. The blinds would blow in when breezes came by because of the gaping holes in the frames. Not to mention the fact that those holes allowed a lot of spiders inside the home.

My Story

Now, I’m just as frugal as one can be. I try not to spend extra money on anything in my house or other areas in my life, but these windows were causing me a lot of anxiety. I was embarrassed to have guests over because the views were so obstructed. On top of the cracks in the glass, my windows had huge condensation problems. After only a few short months I was more than fed up the windows. When I started working for a company that replaced windows, I thought, here’s my chance to get new windows. Long story short,  I got my pricing, got the windows measured, and had them installed within a month.

A lot of people I know are frugal as well. When we hosted guests for the first time after we got the new windows my friend’s son said, “If anybody needed new windows it was you guys. I’m glad you replaced them.” He was ten when he told me this. If he noticed them, everybody else was noticing them too.

Why Aren’t Aluminum Frames Energy Efficient?

What a difference the windows made, truly. My windows were made of aluminum. This was standard practice back in the day, but there are several reasons to switch to a new vinyl window now. The main reason aluminum windows are holding you back is because they are not energy efficient. Old aluminum windows contract and expand with the sun’s heat. This is what often leads to those seal problems you see in the windows. They’d either break away from the glass when they are hot or melt the sealant between the glass causing goop to run down the windows. This leads to that condensation problem as well. Old aluminum windows leak out energy and could be costing you 25% more in energy costs year round.

Other Reasons To Switch

Secondly, aluminum frame windows absorb the sun’s heat and are hot to the touch. This can increase the inside temperature of your home, and who wants that? There would be times I would try to open the windows and they would burn my fingertips. You know that can’t be energy efficient. New vinyl frames are foam filled to insulate better, and they stay at a stable temperature all year round. They don’t expand or contract with the sun.

Superior Glass Protection

Finally, old aluminum glass doesn’t have the energy efficient properties of today’s vinyl windows. New glass in our Windows is made to reflect the sun’s heat back outward, blocking the UV rays from entering your home or even damaging the glass. In fact, our LoE-366 Glass Coating keeps your home a more stable room temperature all year round, and prevents furniture and  rugs from becoming bleached from the sun.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, don’t be stuck in a time warp so that when guests enter your house they feel like they were whisked back to another decade. New energy efficient products like the Conservation 5 Series window can save you a ton of money on energy costs and are a whole lot more functional than old aluminum windows. Our quotes are free and you can get windows installed fast and easy. Ask yourself if your windows still function or are  they functional? Because there is a big difference.
