Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Conservation Construction! We hope you have a wonderful time with your family, and that you have all the recipes you need for the big meal. Garlic Herb Roasted Baby Potatoes

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prepare the Potatoes: Wash and scrub the baby potatoes well. If they are large, you can cut them in half or quarters to speed up the cooking process.
  3. Season the Potatoes: In a large mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, thyme, rosemary, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using). Add the potatoes and toss everything together until the potatoes are well coated in the seasoning mixture.
  4. Roast the Potatoes: Spread the seasoned potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast them in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. You can check doneness by piercing a potato with a fork – it should slide in easily.
  5. Serve: Once the potatoes are done, remove them from the oven and sprinkle with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve immediately alongside your Thanksgiving feast!

Old Thanksgiving Traditions

As we prepare for Thanksgiving we thought we’d discuss old Thanksgiving traditions that have gone out over the years. Does your family still keep any of these old traditions alive today? We are so happy to have you reading today’s article, and if you are in need of new windows, siding or doors please visit our website for your free quote.

  1. At the turn of the 20th century people used to send Thanksgiving greeting cards with giant illustrations of turkeys, pilgrims and pumpkins. We typically see cards sent on Christmas but this tradition has all but vanished. I don’t know about you but I’ve never received a Thanksgiving card before!
  2. We are all used to seeing place cards at weddings, but it used to be that everyone had assigned seating at the Turkey Table too. But as you might have already guessed, they have become far less common, as families continue to move away from some of the more formal Thanksgiving traditions, opting instead for a more casual, organically formed affair.
  3.  Before digging into the turkey and stuffing, families once made it an annual tradition to retell the story of the first Thanksgiving. While grade schools covered the basics, a yearly family brush-up on Thanksgiving Day informed us of details like turkey's absence from the menu; instead, our forebears dined on venison, duck, and oysters.
  4. It used to be that people wanted to work up their appetite before the big feast. They did this by tossing around the pigskin and playing football. a pre-dinner family football game kept kids busy and political discussions at bay.
  5. People used to pull apart the wishbone of the turkey on Thanksgiving day. In many households in the 20th century, the breaking of the wishbone was a hallowed tradition. It also promoted patience and being together with family longer because only a dry wishbone would break!
  6. Southerners often use a cornbread stuffing that originated from a dish called kush, cooked by slaves brought from North and West Africa. Holiday stuffing used to contain more rice which was an ode to Native American wild rice.
  7. In the 19th century Thanksgiving wasn’t widely accepted at first, but for those who chose to celebrate it, it was usually a small family affair right on the farm.
  8. Black Friday wasn’t always a tradition in the united states. The earliest evidence of the phrase Black Friday originated in Philadelphia, dating back to 1961, where it was used by police to describe the heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.
  9. For the people of 1916, the Macy's parade didn't actually exist yet; the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924. Though we treasure this tradition in the US it’s not always been there and we should be thankful we have it now!
  10. In the old days people would eat whatever was on their farm for thanksgiving.

We know that getting new windows can seem like an overwhelming process. This is why we’ve compiled this short list of questions to ask your contractors when you are getting estimates for window replacement. These questions are ways to gain knowledge on the new windows you are getting, and give yourself knowledge to make an educated decision on this very important purchase.

1. What kind of frame comes with the window your purchasing?

This question is a great starting off question because it gives you a lot of knowledge as to whether the window will be energy efficient or not. Wood windows are mostly a thing of the past. A high performance energy efficient window should come with a solid vinyl frame and be scratch resistant. Remember, if you’re using the window a lot it needs to keep its integrity.

2. How many years of installation experience does your contractor have?

A good contractor should have multiple years of experience. Think of it this way, you could give an average person a really nice Gibson guitar, but if he/she doesn’t know how to play it, it wouldn’t make a difference. If you have a top notch window but it’s installed by a person with no experience, it may get installed wrong negating all the energy efficient properties of the window.

3. What kind of warranty does this company offer?

A good window company should at least have 5-10 year warranties tacked on to all newly installed windows. A great window company will have Lifetime Warranties (like Conservation Construction).  This way defects or damage are covered. Windows have a lot of moving parts and a good warranty is essential.

4. How long will it take them to get out and install the windows?

This question is essential when shopping around for windows. I like to think of the industry as the antithesis of instant gratification. Windows take time they need to get measured, then ordered, then made, then transported, then installed. It’s all these steps that can create a bit of a waiting period from the time of the first estimate to the time of installation. If you’re in need of windows quickly or want a specific time frame, it’s good to ask your estimator how long this will take.

5. Do your windows have Low-E glass?

This is a specialized coating that sits on the glass and gives your windows and home protection from the UV rays of the sun. Most states require this type of coating to pass inspections. Plus, this is a great thing to have on your windows to ensure more stable room temperatures all year round.

We hope you’ve learned something from this list of questions on window replacement. Keep all these things in mind when shopping around for replacement windows. Remember that Conservation Construction has all of the things listed above and more. You can get a free quote from us by following the link here. Home Equity Myths Everybody Thinks Are True

You can do it yourself.

It easy to be one of those people who think they can save a ton of money on their home improvement project by doing it yourself. This could be true if you have the skill set and equipment to do the project already. If not, small mistakes can add up to costly repairs. I know, I've been there before and tried them myself without my husband there (that was one BBQ assembly I will never forget). If you start with a contractor who already has the skill set and tools, you know the project will be getting done by someone who has at least done it before. That being said, we're not advocating that you have every project contracted out just major ones you could potentially spend less on.

Cracks in walls are a big issue.

We get it, cracks in your walls can look like a big deal. However, small cracks in the walls are not always and indication of a bigger problems. Most cracks are the result of minor expansion and contraction. A little crack might not be such a big issue. If you are not sure about what is happening, you can always call in a structural engineer to confirm whether it's a major or minor issue. Experts can analyze your home to address and assess the issues. If there is a major problem they can help come up with a foundation repair solution.

I can buy the essentials for the project now . . .

We would really discourage this mentality when doing a home improvement project. Make sure you have all the essentials for the project when you first start. You may think you are saving money now by not buying that tool you "might need," but you "might have" to buy it later and head back to the same store. Save yourself a second trip to the store, more gas and more hassle and just get what you need now. Why make additional trips for no reason, right?

Inside improvements are better than outside.

We would encourage homeowners to try to give priority to both types of projects. The outside of the home is the first thing potential buyers see when they visit your home. Landscaping, Siding, Doors and windows all give off a good or bad first impression. Don't let these things devalue your home. As a potential buyer myself, I have passed on a house that had a ton of outdoor home improvements that needed to get done. Who wants to pull a bunch of weeds when they first move into a home?

Paint hides everything.

Paint has been plastered on walls and home improvement blogs everywhere as the be all end all home improvement project for years. Although it does smell nice and covers up some things, it doesn't solve all problems. We're siding contractors, we should know. It especially does not cover up major siding issues. If you have cracked or warped siding, simply getting a new coat of paint will not fix these issues. You might want to consider how long you are going to be in the home. New siding is insulating and never needs to be painted again, but it only adds about 75% back of the equity you put in. Make sure you're not eating the cost.

Trendy is better.

Trends are well, trendy, for a moment. In addition to the above, we would encourage homeowners to stick to one look and keep it simple. A trend might be a good fit if you are selling your home right now. If you plan on being in your home a while you might want to consider just going with something that fits your lifestyle for the long haul.

Expensive materials will add value to your home.

Expensive materials don't always add back what you think they will when it comes time to sell. For instance some people can't see the difference between New Vinyl Siding on a home verses James Hardie, but there is a significant price jump between the two. Another example would be fancy appliances or decor for a home. You may think they're awesome, but a value conscious individual might not see the value in them the way you do.

It’s Hump Day! For those of you like me there is reason to celebrate mid week. It means we’re one step closer to the weekend! It also it means that we’ve made it through Monday. We’ve crossed the hardest part of the week and are now on the downward part. Just a little longer and we’ll be to Friday, right? Seeing that it is Wednesday, we thought you all deserved to learn some tips on how to improve your home to get you over this hump and onto Thursday!

How Much Does The Average American Spend On Home Improvements?

It’s surprising that the average first time American home buyer spent 34K on home improvements in 2016 alone. Millennial's spend closer to 24K on home improvements this year. Not surprisingly the average overall price people are willing to spend on home improvements has gone up over the past two years. With how much home improvement projects add to the overall equity and curb appeal of a home, this figure is surprising, but not shocking.

With so many people spending so much money on home improvement projects, one thing is clear . . . They, me and you care about the quality of our home life and what kind of home we are living in. It’s up to us which projects we take on. Which home improvement project you pick directly affects your quality of life. It could be from aesthetics to saving money, to a more stable room temperatures, to clearer views. All of these things add up to a more secure home environment. Some projects such as a front door can just add more security to your home. Who wouldn’t want some or all of the above?

What Do you want Out Of Your Home Improvements?

Depending on what your priorities are and how much you want to spend, you could get some or all of the above. We can’t speak to all the home improvement projects, because we don’t sell everything your house could possibly need, but we do sell a ton of objects that could give you improvements in the secure, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and energy efficient categories.

Siding can protect your home, insulate better, and give you the look and feel of a brand new home. New windows can give you clear views while adding energy efficiency to a home. One thing is for certain, each and every one of our products adds value back into your home in the form of equity. In fact, projects like ours are known to accrue back 85% of what you spent on the project, unlike a kitchen or bathroom which only gains back 75% of the value you spent.

In addition all or products are backed by lifetime limited warranties which ensures they will stay beautiful and durable for years to come. We work with you so you get the windows, siding or doors of your dreams without any hassle whatever.

In conclusion, it’s really up to you what you want to spend. It’s up to you to decide which home improvement project takes top priority. You decide the destiny of your home improvement projects, so make them great. Make them add up to energy savings and home equity. Please comment below on what your dream home improvement project would be! We are happy to hear from you and get your insights. Until next time . . .

Home Improvement Projects Can Increase Home Equity

Home Improvement is a great way to increase the equity in your house. From hardwood floors to kitchen and bathrooms, there really is no end to what you can upgrade as a homeowner. But as a homeowner myself, we must think about which projects are going to give us the most back for what we spend. Home renovations only add about 75% of the total money you put into the project. Some projects may add curb appeal like adding a fire pit or outdoor living space. Others like smart devices and new siding or a front door can add additional energy efficiency. Still others like an addition to a home can add more square feet.

Which Remodeling Projects Offer the Best Return on Investment?

So when it comes to remodeling, which is the best for a return on an investment? Which renovation appeals to buyers the most? In real estate there’s really no one good answer to this question. Different buyers are looking for different things when it comes time to them purchasing a home. Additionally, what if you are not ready to sell? What is going to give you the most equity now that will turn into additional equity later? In laymen's terms, which home improvement project is going to give you the most bang for your buck?

Do New Appliances Add Home Value?

Although new appliances are great to look at and might give you more space or functionality for your home, they don’t always increase the value. They might be a nice option for buyers on the edge of buying, however.

Energy Efficient Upgrades That Add Value

Everyone is concerned about energy costs nowadays. For those penny pinchers like me, it is easy to look for ways to try and save money. Everything from gas in your car, to how to reduce costs overall in the square footage of a home. With people taking this so seriously it’s always a good idea to consider items like Siding, Window and Doors which add value while reducing energy bills. These “Two birds With One Stone” items add a ton of energy savings to the home.

Why New Siding Is a Smart Investment

Take siding for instance, it is a sure fire way to increase value in the home while getting the look and feel of an entire new house altogether.. New siding is impact resistant, insulating, bright, and never has to be painted again. Let me repeat that, it never has to be painted again. This means you’ll have the look and feel of a new house for years with little to no effort.

How New Windows and Doors Improve Comfort and Value

On top of that windows and doors have the same properties in that they can increase home value and save you money in the process. In fact, new windows have been known to save the average homeowner up to 35% off their current energy bills. In Addition they block 95% of the harmful UV rays from entering the home. This means you’ll no longer have bleached rugs or furniture. Plus new windows and doors are more functional and easy to operate. I put this in because at my home, before we replaced the windows, we couldn’t get but 1 of the windows to open. In fact, the bad windows were how we got the seller to drop the price down when we first bought.

Exterior Upgrades Can Help Reduce Outside Noise

New siding as well as new windows have been proven to block outside noise and quiet a house by up to 45%. This is another huge selling point. When people visit your house it will be quiet as a library in there.

Choosing the Right Upgrades for Daily Living and Resale

In conclusion there is a real science behind what to replace and when to replace it. Items that need to get upgraded when it comes time to sell a home are different from the items you need to upgrade for everyday life. Appliances might be a good practical thing for both life and add value when it comes time to sell. Windows and Doors are a great for both because they give you more stable room temperatures all year round and add value to the home when it comes time to sell. If you are looking for additional living space, you might want to upgrade this and add more square foot to a home without wanting to move at all.

Create the Home Remodel You Really Want

You don’t need to subscribe to a remodeling magazine to get the “Home remodel” of your dreams. All you need is your computer, hard work and a little innovation to get the home of your dreams.

Ron Swanson needs no introduction, for his reputation proceeds him. What else proceeds him is his wicked woodworking and home improvement skills.

Who could forget when he fixed April and Andy’s light in their bathroom at the Halloween party? With so many great skills shown on Parks and Recreation it’s not wonder that we trust him to take over this next article. Here’s Ron himself with some advice from episode “Meet N’ Greet” in season 4 episode 5 . . .

“No home is complete without a proper toolbox. Here’s April and Andy’s:”

“A hammer, half of a pretzel, baseball card, some cartridge that says ’Sonic and Hedgehog’, a scissor half, and a flashlight. Filled with jelly beans.”

Rule 1: Get a proper toolbox. In addition, fill it with tools that help you to get the job done. Make sure you know how to use the tools properly. Usually this requires you to spend some money initially to get the right tools that can help with anything. Screwdrivers, hammers, tape measure, pliers, utility knife and blades, adjustable wrenches, stiff blade putty knife, straight edge and square, mill file and power drill with heads are all good starts to your first tool kit.

Ron Swanson again . . .

    “Hard Work Is Important”

Rule 2: Therefore, be vigilant and thorough. Take care to measure everything with care. Take your time and pay attention to the details. For instance Ron Swanson gets things done right the first time, he never redoes a project. You can use this in your real life too, measure twice, cut once. With this much attention to detail you’ll get your job done right the first time too.

     “Make Stuff With Your Hands”

Rule 3: Do all the work yourself with your hands. Your self worth is directly proportional to your effort. Your home looks better or worse by you working on it.

     “I know more than you”

Rule 4: Learn as much about home improvement on your own. Know more than every other person at the home improvement store that way you don’t have to rely on other people’s knowledge to get the job done. This way you’ll be an expert and others can look to you for advice.

     “Be A Man”

Rule 5: Ron Swanson said this best when he made his scout guide. Be a man. Men don’t complain. Men don’t question what they are doing. They get the job done right and proper. They work on their project all day if they have to get the job done. What does it mean to just Be A Man. If you have to have more of an explanation you’re not a Real Man.

Rule 6: Finally, choose a quality product. You’re in luck because that is exactly what we provide here at Conservation Construction.  If you are interested in windows, siding or doors give us a call or inquire on line for a free estimate.

In conclusion, you can see all these things seen on parks and rec are practical for real life applications. If you need a refresher course on how to be a better at home improvement just start watching Parks and Rec. There is also a lot of great advice on how to be a better person from Ron himself. If you don’t have time to watch the show, look to Ron Swanson’s Pyramid of Greatness. As a result you'll get a good laugh from it and some semi-good advice.

As always we appreciate your time and attention reading this article.

So, have you’ve ever wondered where the name French Doors came from? This might come as a surprise, or not, but the name French Doors came from the French themselves.

The French designed a window-like-door between the 16th and 17th Century France with glass panes which extended from the top to bottom of the door. This door provided the perfect proportions of light in their homes. This was a great fit for lifestyles of that time, since humans had yet to invent electricity for the household. This meant that even on the dimmest days the doors would allow for much needed natural light to enter. With so much rich history behind this door, it's no wonder people have been choosing this door for centuries.

French Doors can be Single Hinged, Double Hinged, or Center Hinged. A couple of history papers say that French Doors were first made from wood and wrought iron for additional style. Today French Doors are made out of wood, aluminum or vinyl.

Either back then or today French Doors are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. They are practical and stylish. You can get many design options today that allow just as much light into your home without compromising the room temperature.

Unlike the French Doors in the past new glass options allows for optimal energy efficiency and safety. New doors too are built to last. They are both strong and durable.

Here at Conservation Construction a French Door from us includes our amazing Conservation Glass. This glass has one of the lowest U-Factors for glass on the market. Exclusive features including; Easy Clean Glass Coating, Argon Gas Fill, Patented 4 Layer Coating, and Platinum Elite spacers, it’s no wonder our glass saves people a ton of money on energy costs.

If you are looking to replace your old patio door, why not look into a stylish new way to look at your house every day. Go with what the French invented and choose French Door. You’ll get big gold breezes in the summer by being able to open both sides of the door. Your guests will be able to go in and out of your house with ease when you host that big backyard bbq celebration.

So, if you’ve ever wondered where the term “French Door” came from you now know the answer. And if you’re looking for the answer to the second question, “Who Should I Buy My New Patio Door From?” The answer to that question is Conservation Construction. Check us out online. Read our online customer reviews for yourself and see just how much our customers love us!  Also all of our products are backed by limited lifetime warranties.

To explore a modern variation of this classic style, read our blog, Sliding French Doors, and see how they combine elegance with space saving functionality.

Thank you as always for reading. We’ll see you later in the week!

When I was a child I had no interest in Patio Doors or safety or anything having to do with a homeownership. Why would I? My parents took care of everything. Money was never an issue until I grew older. In fact, it’s been told to me on more than one occasion by my mother that i once said as a child, when we didn’t have money for groceries, “Just Write A Check.” Not realizing at the time that checks require money in the bank to actually work. As an adult I know now just how stressful money can be, and how tight it can be on the average homeowner. It’s for this reason I am writing this article today.

There are a lot of companies out there, not just Home Depot, that sell Patio Doors. Some companies have doors that are energy efficient, have weather stripping, and include insulating glass.

My point here is that if you are finally considering a Patio Door after saving up, or considering because you are in dire need of one, it makes no difference. I encourage all of you out there to get the most bang for your buck, and go with a door that will last a lifetime and perform optimally throughout its life. Don’t get caught up in all the gimmicks, look at the facts. What kind of door are you really buying? Look at all the specs and compare. Be your own investigative reporter here.

Once you do you’ll see that there are a ton of companies that promise a “High Quality Product” but can’t deliver on their warranties or glass.

Glass is the most important component to a Patio Door or Window for that matter. Make sure the one you pick is protecting your house from the elements and is energy efficient. Glass Needs To Be Superior In Patio Doors! Anything short of that just won’t cut it. This is where you’ll save the most money over time.

With that being said I still want to keep this article light and fun, because after all it is a Friday and I know my audience's eyes are more likely to glaze over quickly than other days of the week. Let’s face it we’re all looking forward to a nice relaxing weekend.

Let me just give you the specs of our patio door and you can decide for yourself. I encourage you to compare these to our competitors. Two seconds of your attention please. A list of features that come with our Patio Doors are;

Finally Our Glass (Which is the most important part) has;

In conclusion, we want you to be happy with the door you choose. Do we have patio doors superior to Home Depot? I’m not going to say outright that our patio doors are or are not, we’ll let you do that research yourself.

Lastly, just keep in mind that a fellow person knows the struggles of maintaining a household, and if a new patio door can give you a sense of security and save you money in the process it’s well worth it in my opinion.

To compare quality across more exterior products, read our blogs, Why Fiberglass Doors Are Superior and Better Than Home Depot Windows, and see how premium materials and expert installation make the difference.

We hope you all have a wonderful, fantastic, splendiferous weekend. We’ll see you next week when I try to entertain the senses with another silly, yet informative, article.

So just why are our patio doors thicker than Chuck Norris’ Bicep? Truly they aren’t. Is anything better than Chuck Norris? Not according to humor it isn’t. But we will go over what you should look for in a sliding glass patio door. Why is the thickness of a door important? What exactly should you look for when shopping around for a new patio door? Those are great questions to ask.

I think we should start by saying that thickness is not standard in a “Standard Sliding Glass Door” in the industry. Each sliding glass door sold varies by manufacturer and has different dimensions. Thickness of a door is determined by several factors including;

It’s all these factors together which determine the thickness of a door. This thickness along with all the microscopic layers of thermal protection placed on the window, provide the protection from the elements, give the patio door its overall U-factor for energy efficiency and determine how the glass will perform over its life.

Overall it’s more important to have an energy efficient door rather than a thick sliding glass that is just thick. There are a ton of manufacturers that sell doors which may seem great, but if they are not filled with a gas which can lower thermal transference from the UV rays coming inside, it’s not really helping your home’s overall energy efficiency.

Make sure you check the specs before you buy a new patio door. This is a fairly large purchase and you want to make sure the door is durable and will stand up against the test of time. Some other good questions to ask are;

Glass is the most important factor in choosing a sliding glass door. I mean glass is literally in the title! Low E glass provides superior energy efficiency. It is coated in 4 layers to protect the glass. Ask about this if you are looking for a patio door.

Lastly advances in technology have opened the doors to a new technology called Easy Clean Coating. It’s pretty neat and here’s why. Easy Clean Glass Coating is a special coating placed on some sliding glass doors (the ones Conservation Construction sells have it). What is Easy Clean Coating exactly? It is a microscopic layer which reacts with the suns rays to decompose organic matter from the glass. It also uses a separate silicon dioxide layer to create a ultra smooth layer so the water literally “sheets off.” Watch the video at the end of this article to see for yourself.

So in conclusion, thickness of a sliding glass door doesn’t have an overall factor in whether you should choose that door or not. Look at the overall specs of the glass. The two most important things to look for are the the U-factor to see if it is going to be energy efficient and second that the door is going to be easy to use. If you’ve got these two things down I’d say you’ve already got a bigger head start when looking for a new door. Check out our website for your door if you’ve enjoyed this article. Have a great weekend.

Hello to all. Santa here. As we approach this holiday week I wanted to take time out of my busy schedule overseeing the elves and re-checking my naughty and nice list to give you a brief history lesson on my favorite siding. For those of you who don’t know much about siding products, there are more than several out there, but there’s only one we use here at the North Pole. It’s a siding that is strong, durable and beautiful. James Hardie is the preferred siding for our North Pole operations center. It’s ability to resist strong winds, harsh weather, whilst staying beautiful all year round is why we’ve chosen it.

For those of you who don’t know me that well, I’m into deep and rich traditions. Our entire operation relies on the belief in me and my reindeer. James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding too is seated in deep and rich traditions which is another reason we chose it up here at North Pole Headquarters.

What is the history of James Hardie Siding and how did it evolve into the prolific product we know today? Take a trip with me, Santa, down memory lane and learn the unique history and evolution of James Hardie Siding and learn why it is my favorite siding product . . .

Hardie Fiber Cement Products didn’t start out as siding at all. It started when James Hardie, a humble man from Linlithgow Scotland, immigrated to Australia in 1888. He created a business importing animal hides and exotic oils. Andrew Reid came too from Linlithgow and joined James in Melbourne. They took on a full time partnership with the business in 1895.  Hardie retired in 1911 selling his half of the business to Reid.

James Hardie LTD was first listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1951. In the following years Reid’s family led the expanding business into the new century from 1911 to 1995 when Reid’s grandson finally retired. The company built up a diverse portfolio of building industrial products. It was in the mid 1980’s that James Hardie LTD pioneered the development of fiber-cement technology. They took this technology and engineered into a wide array of building products. It was a great use for this product because of its strength, durability, and versatility.  It’s been developing and honing fiber cement products for decades now. This siding graces the side of more than 8 million houses worldwide.

In 2010 James Hardie moved its headquarters to the Ireland and is now distributing siding all around the world.

So there you have it. With such a rich history you can see why so many people choose James Hardie for their siding. But it wasn’t all about history. The durability of this product was a huge sell for me as we do live in the North Pole. Mrs. Clause did her research and found that James Hardie has all of these properties as well . . .

With all these properties Mrs. Clause was sold and so was I. We got to pick a truly unique look for our home that best matched our unique personality. Since the second we put the siding on our North Pole house it’s been nothing but reliable and beautiful.

So that’s the story of James Hardie Siding. It didn’t rhyme like some of the other stories that are told about me over the holidays, but it is still a nice story nonetheless. So remember if you are looking for new siding this season you’ve got Santa’s seal of approval with James Hardie Siding. If you are on the nice list and would like this unique gift for Christmas List. If you are good enough you might just find a nice gift certificate from Conservation Construction under the tree to go toward your next siding purchase. Santa doesn’t usually endorse, but when he does he picks James Hardie Siding and Conservation Construction.

That’s all for today. I’ll see you next week when I’m delivering presents with my eight tiny reindeer. Remember it’s never too late to get on the nice list. A Big Thanks to Conservation for letting me write the article this week.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. That was the recurring theme in Canada and Greenland when Igloos were first used by Inuit People during harsh winters. Snow was used because the air pockets inside it made it a great insulator. Snow igloos were not spherical but instead built more closely resembling a paraboloid. Using this shape allowed the snow, even over time as it melted, to compress down in a way that would not stress or allow the snow to buckle. It also kept the inside temperature of the  igloo steady and warm even while cold winds raged outside.

We’re not saying to go out and build an igloo around your house--although that might be fun to do. We’re saying we can give you a more stable temperature all year round with our siding that works better than an igloo. What is this incredible siding? It’s Cedar Ridge Siding and it’s creating a lot of buzz in the siding world. You can make your house the only igloo on the block with Cedar Ridge Insulated Siding.

Cedar Ridge Siding is the most insulating siding on the market. It was specifically engineered by Nepoor to improve thermal performance and keep moisture out. It features a smarttrack system which prevents water from being trapped behind the panels. Above all this it’s produced with TXL lamination technology for superior bonding. All these properties keep the elements out and your house extremely insulated. Really this is a complete moisture management system here. It also helps eliminate heat loss around windows and doors. There you have it, your very own igloo!

Want more peace and quiet than you’ve ever experienced in your house before? Your house will be so much quieter than the neighbors with Cedar Ridge Siding. This siding can reduce noise by up to 45%. How incredible is that? It’s also highly impact resistant, even able to withstand winds up to 160mph. You won’t have to worry about this siding, or ever have to paint it again. Hand milled cedar wood appearance comes standard and straightens walls for a clean smooth finished look. Once it’s placed on your house you can really just admire how beautiful it is.

Another huge appeal to Cedar Ridge Siding is it’s mix and match colors and trim. Choose a look for your house unlike any other on your block. You can even pick more than one color and a totally different trim to compliment the look. With 23 different colors to choose from we’re confident you’ll find the style for you.

Leading industry standards you will benefit by being able to create an exterior that is energy efficient, incredibly durable and 100% you.

In conclusion your house will be saving so much money from all the insulation, the energy company will be calling seeing if there is something wrong with your meter. So this season put a little more money into investing in yourself. New siding will provide equity down the road and give you a smile whenever you drive toward your house.

So it’s easy to have a modern igloo with Cedar Ridge Siding. Be the neighbor that sets the standards for the block. Remember the properties below and inquire by phone or online.

Cedar Ridge is really quite extraordinary!

Thanks and have a great day!

Steal the holidays, really? We’re not talking about you stealing presents like the Grinch did in the beloved Dr. Seuss book. We’re not talking about stealing at all actually. We’re referring to stealing the attention from all the neighbors with our Steel Siding that is . . . Just check out this picture.

Wow, what a metal wall! Want a look like no other house on the block? You'll get that with steal siding. Could you even imagine having a home this beautiful? It’s hard to think of this when we think Steel Siding, am I right? Most people would probably think of some old rust covered barn that is outdated and looks like it’s on the side of collapsing. But truly steel siding has come a long way in advancements over the years. Although it’s more popular right now for most people to think of Vinyl or Fiber Cement for one of their siding choices, we here at Conservation Construction think steel gets overlooked. It deserves a lot more credit than it get and here’s why . . .

I bet most readers didn’t know that Steel Siding is steel relevant. Steel siding might seem like a thing of the past. Who has a metal roof or roofing and wall panels made from steel any longer? But you’d be surprised at just how technologically sound Steel Siding is. As the picture shows before this weather tight system is also beautiful.

The durability you’ll get from steel siding is unparalleled by any other product on the market.  Metal panels for steel siding are extremely dent resistant resistant. This metal siding does not absorb moisture either, making it mold and rot resistant. It’s also repels insects and is fire resistant which could save you money on insurance. In fact, steel siding is practically impervious to fire. You’ll sleep soundly whether your hear or away knowing how durable your siding is.

If you are considering stronger entryways along with durable exterior upgrades, explore Steel Front Door Replacement to see how a steel door can boost security, efficiency, and curb appeal.

Steel siding is also extremely low maintenance over its life. With steel you can typically install it and forget it. It never fades like typical Vinyl so repainting is a thing of the past. This saves you money on day to day maintenance costs. It also saves your future self money on having to repaint the house.

Another huge benefit to our steel siding is it’s insulating properties. Energy efficiency is a key thing to have in a siding for homeowners today, and it is with confidence we say that steel holds up alongside other types of siding on this front too. It reflects radiant heat as well, so your house will stay cool in the summer. Snow, sleet, frost, rain, wind, and even heat have very little effect upon metal siding.  So even in extreme weather you know your house will be protected. You’ll also get a more stable room temperature all year round. Plus you’ll be saving money because your house will be more energy efficient. This means, over time, that you’ll have more money in your pocket to save on other things like new windows.

Steel Siding has also come a long way in developments in aesthetic. Choose the look you want by mixing; colors, textures, and patterns for your siding. Steel siding looks great on modern houses or traditional houses see the difference in these pictures . . .

Lastly for those “Green Living” homeowners out there, Steel Siding is almost always recyclable. So after it’s done its job after 25+ years you know it will not end up in a landfill, but instead be refurbished and reused. You won’t find that with any other siding on the market. No plastic or composite plastics in this siding.

It’s also easy to install just like a steel roofing system. Trust our guys to do all the heavy lifting for you! You won’t have to lift a finger at all. Inquire about our amazing steel siding online or over the phone. For a Colorado homeowner this siding is exciting!

So don’t be like the Grinch and steal presents. Instead steal stares from the neighbors at their jealousy of your house! With beauty this deep, it runs more than the surface of your house. You’ll start to see positive changes in your mood right away. Check us out online.

Are you decking the halls this holiday season like the rest of us? Or like Clark Griswold? Let’s face nobody decorated a house like Christmas Vacation, right? Are you checking the condition of your holiday lights? Once the extension cords have been untangled, you’ve checked your lights, the plastic clips have been placed, and you’ve decided how to hang the lights on your trees, it really is the best time of the year to inspect your siding while you’re outside. If you’re already risking life and limb climbing on a ladder to hang Christmas lights, you might as well check the condition of your siding while you’re up there. Plus, checking the siding is super easy to do while light strings are being hung. Really it takes less than 10 minutes.

Checking your siding makes it last a lot longer, trust me. Vinyl siding, or any siding really, is very easy to inspect yourself. While you’re hanging lights do a visual inspection and look for warped panels. If you visually see warped panels than take a small screwdriver and try and poke under the siding. Take careful notice of how firm or soft the panels are. If they are softer it’s a clear indication that water is getting underneath the panels. If this is happening you need to replace your siding soon. If the water is getting through the panels and soaking them, it may be getting into the house’s drywall or foundation as well. These issues can cause a lot of structural damage to a home. It’s better to fix it now rather than later.

Checking your siding this way will also help you indicate if any of the panels are rotting or if mold or mildew is present. If there is, it is easy to see on top or just underneath the panels. This sort of things means moisture is sticking to the siding. Mold, mildew, or rot is very dangerous for you and your family. If you see these things change the siding out immediately.

Another key item to look for is peeling paint. As we’ve stated, siding is supposed to keep the moisture out of your house. If water is sitting there for a prolonged time it can cause the paint to peel. Do another visual inspection for this item alone. If you see this is might mean you need to have a quote for new siding.

Lastly, bubbles can occur with old or poorly installed siding. These king of bubbles can indicate that water is being trapped below the surface of the paint. Again, any type of standing water on the outside of your house is bad news and needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

So let’s go over some quick and fast tricks again to check the condition of your siding while putting up the Christmas lights.

    1. Are there one, two, or many warped panels?
    1. Do you see mold, mildew, or rot?
    1. Is there peeling paint present?
  1. Are bubbles collecting on the siding?

In Conclusion, it is very important for the life of your house to inspect the siding. There’s never a better time to check then while you’re outside already hanging the lights. You and others will have a much easier time and way less excuses if you just do it then. With our 4 types of amazing siding including;

If you do end up needing to switch our your siding, give us a call! We stand behind you, our product, and our customer service. Check out our website today for more information and as always we wish you continued happiness during this holiday season!

And while you’re getting into the holiday spirit, don’t miss our fun read, Santa's Favorite Christmas Cookies, for a sweet seasonal break after checking your siding.

First and foremost the most crystal clear views inside your house are going to come from your windows being clean and clear to begin with. If your windows are full of fog and cracked like mine it would be very hard to see any lights from the inside. If you have been thinking about replacing your windows there's never been a better time than right now. All our estimates are always free. If you get a quote now you could have clear views to display your lights before the season is over. How amazing would that be? Our windows are the most top-notch on the market which means you'll get; energy efficiency, Easy Clean coating, Argon Gas fill, weather resistance, and unparalleled beauty. The second most helpful tip for decorating your home windows with lights is Command Hooks! These little hooks are not cheap. However, is a heck of a lot easier to take them down later than nails which can cause permanent holes in the siding, drywall, or fascia of your house. You'll be doing your house a big favor by choosing to put up command hooks instead. Use the command hooks they've designed for lights. Be careful. If you don't have the money to hire someone to get on the roof and string up the lights (who does?) then make sure you have assistance. Also make sure you are wearing the proper shoes and are using proper equipment. It's better to be safe than sorry as the saying goes. Also, you don't always have to use string lights. There are many other options from flood lights, to hanging lights that can set your house above the rest.  Another thing to consider is to trying to find a common theme. Okay, as a person who goes out and looks at Christmas Lights every year this is more of a stylistic criticism. I like when people choose matching lights and try to coordinate the entire house to look like one cohesive vision. Try to mix and match your lights to your best abilities. Outdoing the neighbors is a must. I'm also a firm believer in this philosophy . . . It only takes one yard decoration to go from classy to tacky. Keep this in mind as you are placing things in the yard. You and me could be one decoration away from falling into chaos. I'm taking this article a bit too seriously at this point, but you get the basic gist of the situation. Lastly, and I cannot stress this enough, it is so important to put your lights away in an organized orderly fashion. As a kid, the previous year would come back to haunt my family as we'd struggle to detangle yards and yards of lights. Do yourself a favor for next year, keep your lights in a nice neat bundle. You are protecting your lights from getting damaged, and saving yourself a lot of headache for when you re-open the decorations next year. Finally, have fun! After all that is what this season is about!

We sell and install only a top notch product. So this week we wanted to go over some of our favorite films which have beautiful window scenes to show you the “big picture” on just how important windows are in a home (not to mention how cool they are when someone is jumping off of them via skyscraper). This moves us right along to our first movie . . .      I’ll give you the film description first. Let’s take you back to the box office in 2011. Tom Cruise, a mission that was impossible. Okay, I sort of gave it away, but this film is the pinnacle of what windows can do for film. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol received mixed reviews from critics and audience, but this scene was quite epic. Height, suspense, daring feats of strength, and mirrored reflections added another level of beauty to each shot. These scenes atop Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai were quite expertly shot and cinematically beautiful. Image result for mission impossible ghost protocol   We cannot talk about film and windows without mentioning not only the most important window film, but also one of the most important movies in film history. This movie centers around Grace Kelly and James Stewart. A bad leg injury immobilizes James. All he has for entertainment is to watch the neighboring apartments occupants -- more or less spying on them for days on end.  As they observe, they find something suspicious going on . . . If you haven’t guessed the movie yet, it’s Rear Window. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, stop reading and go watch it immediately because you have missed out on a huge part of film history.      As you may or may not know, you cannot have this film without the very large picture windows that Jimmy uses to watch his neighbors. You would also have no plot if the neighboring apartments didn’t have crisp clean windows to look through either. Despite the fact that these windows are not a living character, they are a character in the film nonetheless. This film was brought to you by windows! This entire movie is one long window scene. Image result for the dark knightLet’s move to movie number three, which was co-written, produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. It was released in 2008 and it stars a man who is also a Bat (well, sort of). The Dark Knight was released to critical and commercial success grossing 539.5 million the first weekend it opened domestically. And . . .  it had a ton of good window scenes in the movie--especially when The Joker crashes a party looking for Harvey Dent. When he doesn’t find who he’s looking for, he takes Rachel Dawes (Batman’s girlfriend) and dangles her out the window as a threat. This easy to open window offers all the suspense in this particular shot.  It’s 1999 and we’re taking the blue pill, no the red, no, the blue . . . We’re learning Karate and armed combat with the flip of the switch. Starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, The Matrix was, and still is, a classic. Unfortunately, there is just way too many window scenes in this movie to get them all, but let's focus on the beginning of the film. To avoid capture, Neo is told to escape out of his own office building. To do this, he must scale down his 50+ story building on a window cleaning kit. Talk about a thrilling movie to watch. He gets scared and turns around, but what a window! Image result for the matrix      Who could forget this terrifyingly tragic scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. In this 1980’s classic, Ferris Bueller and his friend Cameron Frye take out Frye’s dad’s car for a day playing “Hooky.” In an attempt to make sure Frye’s dad hasn’t noticed they were driving around his very expensive 1961 Ferrari 250 GT all day, they try to “take off the miles” by raising the back end of the car and placing the vehicle in reverse. Things backfire when the car comes off the jack and reverses out of the huge windows of the garage. As it smashes through, it tumbles into a ravine full of trees. Although this window scene is horrendous to watch, it is also hilarious. Again, brought to you by windows!Image result for ferris bueller's day off car      This final flick has a particularly special place in my heart. It’s Life As A House, and it centers around actor Kevin Kline and his son who are building a new house over a summer (to overly simplify the plot). The final scene showcases the finished house at Sunset (the house to the left). Light is gleaming and glistening over the windows. This shows a spectacular cinematic view through the windows of the house. I needed to put it in because that last scene brings the whole movie full circle. You'll have to watch the movie to see the real end shot.    If those dramatic window moments got you thinking about your own home, be sure to read our blog, 5 Replacement Window Basics You Must Know, to learn what really matters when upgrading your windows.     In conclusion, all these incredible movies with windows should remind you that manufacturers like Conservation Construction can provide beautiful windows for your home that will be a sight to see and last a lifetime. Sometimes shopping for a new Entry Door is stressful not exciting like shopping for new shoes or a jacket, but there are ways to make it fun. Researching your next home improvement project is the first step to getting the ideal door. This also helps make the process easier and more exciting.

There are many different blunders homeowners make when choosing a new entry door. Here is just a short list for you to review before you purchase your next entry door. Hopefully by the end of the article you’ll be a Front Door expert, and really have a handle on which type of door will fit best with your home.

    1. Choosing the correct material for your home Entry Door . . .

      1. A lot of people overlook the material of the door, but is key to keep this in mind when purchasing. Make sure you do your research on which type of door will be the most resistant to the weather and the climate in your area. Be aware if your door will be in direct sunlight or not. This may sway you not to purchase a steel door as they can get very hot in direct sunlight. Is the entryway covered, or exposed to the elements? These questions will lead you to which door will be the best fit for your home.

    1. What type of installation are you using . . .

      1. Choosing the right entry door involves more than just deciding what look you like the best. The difference between an okay and phenomenal door is literally whether or not it’s installed properly. If you’re not sure about how to install the door yourself it might be best to hire a contractor like Conservation Construction to do the installation for you. Many problems can occur from installing a new door in an old structure. Measurements alone will not guarantee a trouble free operation.

    1. Buying a door only for looks . . .

      1. So we may have implied it in the previous two bullet points, but we can’t overstate it enough--Functionality of a entry door comes before looks. Front doors should first and foremost be a way to keep your home energy efficient. They should also provide superior protection and ease of operation. The style of the door should be the least of your concerns at first. I know this sounds like a bummer, but most companies today, including Conservation Construction, have doors that are both functional and pretty all in one. This means that it’s not hard to look at practicality of a door first without finding one you like.

    1. Paint Color . . .

      1. Choosing the correct color of your door is crucial. Even though paint color is subjective it is the main focal point of a house and you want to choose one that both compliments and represents your style. Make a bold statement by choosing a bright color. Or for the more traditional homeowners out there choose one with a stained finish. At Conservation Construction we offer coatings which are baked on which means you’ll never have to paint the doors again and they will stay pristine against any wear and tear for the life of the door.

  1. Budget

    1. It’s of course important to establish a budget on what you are willing to spend on an entry door. The better quality the door the more it will cost, but the longer it will last too. Are you looking for a door that will last 10 years or the rest of the life of the house? These are both great questions to ask yourself when selecting the perfect Door for your. Spending a little more now might save you the trouble of having to buy another door in the future.

So to recap . . .

We are certain with these few tips and tricks, buying your new Entry Door will be a heck of a lot less stressful and a bundle more fun than it was before. Because if you are like me having to choose a new entry door can be pretty dull. Let’s you and I bring back the excitement behind this shopping experience.

No, this isn’t a magical door like the wardrobe closet in the Chronicles Of Narnia. It also doesn’t lead you to an alternate dimension where you can see your future predicted with a deck of tarot cards. It’s not artificial intelligence either.

New Front Doors can help you predict your financial future. How can they do this you may be asking yourself.

It’s simple. New Entry Doors are energy efficient, and energy efficient doors are known to reduce the amount of energy you need to cool or heat your home. Reduced energy puts more money from your electric bills right into your pocket.

According to the Department Of Energy 45% of your energy bills during the winter come from heat loss which escapes through the front doors and windows. Which means you could save up to 45% on your energy costs if you switch to more efficient entry doors or windows. Heating your house in the winter is also the largest expensive for the average American home. Reduce that future bill now!

We know that it might seem unbelievable but if you replace your old Entry Door with a new energy efficient one you can know without a doubt that any future bills that come your way will be reduced.

See that, I just predicted your future for you. It wasn’t a bunch of hokum like a real Psychic would throw your way either. These are real facts based on statistical data. ⅛ of and inch size gap under a 36inch wide door will let in as much cold air as a 2.4 inch-diameter hole punched in the wall. That’s a ton of cold air you’re letting into your house unnecessarily. With Entry Door Replacement or Window Replacement from Conservation Construction, your future is clear. In addition you’ll have lower energy bills.

Moreover our doors won the energy star partner of the year 2 years running. They also have the lowest heat coefficient on the market. Which is just a fancy way of saying that our doors are the most efficient you can buy and let the least amount of energy in or out of your house.

Are you ready to join Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Me too! Except that for the “muggles” out there like you and me it is extremely hard to get in if you don’t possess magical abilities. Shucks, right? As Halloween draws near you can bet that everyone is anticipating dressing up for the season and rocking their best Harry Potter costume though. At Conservation Construction we too are ready for the upcoming holiday.

I can’t guarantee to you that Hogwarts actually exists (although we hope every day that it does) I can assure you that if it did, they would choose our windows for their school from the lowest entry to the tallest tower. Why is that? You must be asking.

I’m glad you asked. Hogwarts is a school that is only attended by the most amazing students with superior magical abilities. Not to mention that all of their professors are outstanding wizards themselves. Our windows have these same stupendous qualities.

We designed our windows along with Anlin to face certain weather and climate shifts faced by Colorado homeowners. Which means they could stand up to any weather thrown at them at Hogwarts too. Colorado’s bipolar weather can shift at a moment's notice. Generic windows just won’t cut for a house here in this state. Not when extreme heat and blazing cold can happen all in one day. It wouldn’t cut it at Hogwarts either when you’ve got spells bouncing off the walls. You need a superior glass and that is what we’ve designed down to the very last detail.

All of our glass includes;

With Easy Clean Glass you’ll get the sun working for you! This unique coating uses the power of UV to keep debris from sticking to the window. It also means that you’ll be cleaning a lot less. That’s very good news that didn’t even have to be delivered by an owl.

Our Low-E Glass also provides superior insulation so your house (or Hogwarts) will be a more stable room temperature. You don’t need Professor Trelawney to tell you what your future energy bill will be because you know it will decrease--plus her predictions weren’t that accurate anyway. But you know with our windows you’ll be spending less, that’s a guarantee.

Our windows are extremely durable and won’t shatter under pressure, making your home a safer place to be. Truth be told i’m not sure what the Avada Kedavra curse would do to them though, but I’m not willing to test that spell out and neither should you. But against regular everyday weather or forces you can count on them. We also provide limited lifetime warranties so you won’t have to worry about it.

So if you are window decorating this holiday season waiting for the trick or treaters to come knocking and notice a cold breeze coming in through the cracks, consider switching to new windows with Conservation Construction. Halloween window decorations are great, but you shouldn’t have to go through a cold snap just to get them on the windows.

In conclusion, you or Hogwarts would be happy to have our glass installed because of the insulating properties and optimal installation we provide. I bet you your house would take a lot less time to install new windows on than Hogwarts would too. Check out the specs to learn why our windows slide above the competition. Get a free quote for Halloween and see all those tricks before they come to your door.

Do you love the way snow looks on the mountaintops? How about the way it falls from the sky in delicate patterns and creates blankets of white over the ground? How about the way you feel while sipping a cup of coco by the fire while watching the snowfall outside? If you are like me you love watching the snow and the sense of quiet it brings to the outside world. Snow days are the best days.

What’s not fun is hearing the furnace click on every five minutes because all the warm air in your house is escaping outside through the cracks in your windows or doors. When Mother Nature brings cold weather it doesn’t always stay outside. Wind chill which blows in with the winter weather is a real problem if you have old doors and windows. Can you literally hear the money escaping through the cracks every time the heater turns on? It might be in your best interest to invest in your home.

I swear, before I replaced my windows and doors the air would literally get cold minutes after the furnace clicked off. Shouldn’t your home be working with you and not against you? In most cases you’d want your home to be working for you, right? Old windows, entry doors, or patio doors can sometimes be a bigger hindrance than help, especially in the winter months when sunlight is already a hot commodity.

Don't board up the house and shut all the blinds just to keep the heat in. If you are like me and want to still be able to enjoy the beauty outside without compromising the inside temperature of your home, new windows, patio doors or entry doors might be a good--more energy efficient-- option for your home.

At Conservation Construction our customers save up to 30% on their in home energy expenses just by switching out the windows and doors. That’s on average. If you have really old windows (like mine before I switched) with huge gaps in them it is possible to save even more. What’s that you’re imagining? The look of a lower energy bill? Don’t imagine any longer because that can become a reality now!

With new windows you’ll be able to keep the blinds open during the snow storms. You won't even worry about what the temperatures outside will be doing to your home inside. You can sit by the window, play games, and enjoy the views without feeling the cold air.

Easy Clean Glass coating on each window and patio door which uses the power of the sun to clean itself off. So after the storm blows over you’ll have squeaky clean windows. All this along with a lower energy bill will have you breathing a sigh of relief.

Our patio doors are easy to operate and are custom designed to your home to get the tightest seal possible. This means you’ll get even better energy efficiency than other companies on the market. They slide easily to allow for optimal trips to the backyard for sledding or building that snowman!

Lastly you and your family will love just how beautiful your house will look with the addition of new patio doors or windows. It really does give your house an amazing finishing touch. Get yours today before the holidays so you can impress your extended family too.

In conclusion, you can love the snow and not the cold. Switch to new energy efficient windows and doors from Conservation Construction. Keep your room temperature stable all year round!

The best part is that all our estimates are free and are price locked for one year. If you Inquire by phone or online now you can have the windows or doors installed before the next snow storm. You will be able to enjoy it instead of stressing about how you are going to pay for that electricity bill. We are sure you’ll be glad you did. Don’t wait, unlike Game of Thrones winter is not coming, it’s already here!

The Baha Men once asked, “Who Let The Dogs Out?” So what is the real answer to that question? It’s not as glamorous as you’d think. It was you and me and everybody else who owns a dog who let the dogs out.

You Know the drill when you have a dog . . . Scratch, scratch, scratch . . . bark, bark, bark . . . and then it’s just you getting up and down and up and down because there is just no stopping this endless cycle of letting your pets in and out of the house.  Let’s face it, you are the master, but it doesn’t feel like your are, right? Doesn’t that seem like something a “master” would not have to do? If you are fed up with this little cycle as much as I am, you’re in for a real treat with this next article.

What if there were an accessory that would be able to help you and your pet out? One that would not be any less energy efficient, but would add a way for your pet to let themselves in and out of the house so you could sit back, relax, and stop pausing that show of yours to open the door again. Well, that accessory is here and it’s never been made better.

Give your pets the luxury and freedom of a passport without having to prove they are american citizens or wait in a long government line to do so. It’s a Freedom Pet Door Accessory from Conservation Construction. Shown here in the picture below.

He doesn’t look that happy, does he? Well it’s because he knows you’ll be spending less time getting up to let him out. Or he’ll stop having excuses to go on the bathroom floor. He might miss the companionship, but trust me you won’t mind giving him a little independence.

Opening an entire front door or patio door is a huge loss of energy no matter what house you’re in. Doing it multiple times a day to let your pets in an out is an ever bigger loss. A pet ready door customized to your pets size will allow only a fraction of that air to escape. Not only will your pet have more freedom, you’ll be saving money on energy bills. In my opinion, that is pretty darn “cool” way to save money in the summer.

Say you are gone for a long day at work and you come home to a little “Surprise” on your new rug. That’s okay, we’ve all been there before. You just didn’t make it back home in time to stop the accident. Instead of getting mad at man’s best friend think about getting a pet door accessory. That way this will likely never happen again because your dog will let himself out when he needs to “do business.”

Why is our pet door superior? Standard pet doors just can’t stand up to the muli-pet-homes which have animals constantly wanting to dash in and out. But the PetSafe Freedom Pet Door is anything but standard. There is a solid aluminum frame which is intended for heavy use and features a soft flap with magnetic closure. This allows easy access inside and out for your pet. It also means it will close back up right after your pet is through so it won’t allow strong breezes through the living room. The included slide in closing panel locks the door to restrict access or add more weather resistance.

The best part is that if you get a new patio door or front door from Conservation Construction you can order the Doggie Door to come standard! You pick the size and where it goes! This means not only will the pet door be energy efficient but our doors, which are all energy star approved for efficiency, will add another level of money savings to your house. That is a back to front, inside and out,  win win for you, your pet and your pocketbook.

So jump up and down! It’s time to celebrate the fact at you can now binge watch an entire season of America’s Got Talent, The Good Doctor, or Game Of Thrones and you won’t have to keep pausing to let the dogs outs. Because the answer to, “Who Let The Dogs Out?” should no longer be your or me. After you get a patio door or entry door from us with a Pet Accessory attached the lyrics to that song are going to be changed permanently to, “The Dog’s Let Themselves Out.” And you’ll be screaming,“Woooh! Woooh! Wooooh! Woooh!”

Have a great Friday and weekend and we’ll see you next Wednesday for another article! Until then, you might want to let your own dogs out if you haven’t got a dog door just yet . . .

The HBO show Game Of Thrones once said, “Winter is Coming” or today as I write this article I’ll say, “Winter Is Here.” What does this mean for you and your home? As the summer’s light gets shorter and the cloudy days start rolling in the snow, you may be finding yourself in need of more levels of vitamins. Your Circadian rhythm can get thrown off just by the decrease of small amounts of sunlight. I myself suffer from seasonal affective disorder. The short days and lack of sunlight can actually make me depressed and sad. Having a home that works with you is the first defense against “getting the blues” this time of year. If you are like me you have to keep your house just as bundled up as you are in the winter due to the cold air outside. This can cause you to get a decrease of sunlight as well if you don’t have energy efficient windows, doors, or siding (which is not ideal with the lack of sunlight anyway). Sunlight exposure is critical in the winter months as much as the summer and offers many health benefits. It gives you vitamin D and keeps your serotonin levels up. Serotonin, if you don’t know already, makes you happy. Don't let the winter blues get you down any longer. The solution is simple. More energy efficient patio doors and windows. If you are constantly having to close the curtains to keep the hot air in, new Patio Doors from Conservation Construction might be the perfect fit for your home. You’ll be able to keep your curtains or blinds open all year round without losing a bit of energy efficiency. Our windows let all the sunlight in without compromising the temperature in your home. This means you’ll get to keep getting all the bright light therapy you’ll need to keep your mood up without even having to spend time outside in the cold to get it. Choose from one of our amazing four styles including;     Structural reinforcements inside the door protect your home even more from the outside elements, and a triple seal interlocking meeting at the rail means it’ll provide your home with a weather tight seal to keep out the elements (especially the snow and cold air). Still not convinced? There’s more . . .   Our doors are filled with Argon gas fill. They are the most energy efficient option than our competitors out there. All the while our doors will provide a perfect view of the peaceful snowfall. So grab that cup of coco, open the curtain, and sit by the windows. You won’t feel the cold but you will feel the feels of the peaceful Colorado outdoors.   So no matter what time of day, it’s always a good time to open your curtains and let the light in with our patio doors. Increase your happy and the amount of vitamins you are getting. Contact us today for more information on our patio doors and how they can make your life easier. We provide amazing energy efficient windows too!   If you’re considering an upgrade during the colder months, be sure to read our blog, Winter Window Replacement, to learn why winter can be a smart time to install new windows. So if you haven’t seen it before happening in your own house I’m sure you’ve seen it in another person’s house. They are eerie, spooky, and downright ugly, what are they? Burnt Floors! They are usually a large spots just inside the entryway where your glass patio door is located. My father-in-law himself has a huge brown spot just inside his kitchen from where the patio doors open and close. What are these brownish-black spots caused by? The sun of course. Most people don’t know that discolored floors are the direct effect of insufficient patio doors. Kind of like that old trick we used as kids to start a fire just using a magnifying glass, older sliding glass doors can amplify the sun's rays and project all that heat onto the floor. In some cases the heat over time can cause burn marks on the floor from the constant heat. Old glass which is less energy efficient and does not keep out harmful UV rays and can cause fading in some cases and downright burning in other cases. To make my point even more clear here is a picture to demonstrate how bad your floors can get . . . Do you see the awful streaking black pattern at the bottom of the sliding glass door? This is caused by the sun combined with poor windows. This isn’t just one house either. I’ve seen this in so many houses in and around the Denver that I’ve visited. So instead of just replacing the floor and waiting for this to happen again, look at replacing your sliding glass door instead. This way you’ll only have this problem one time. Old glass does not protect your home against these elements. Luckily for you Conservation Glass has been engineered for the savvy homeowner.   A glass door from Conservation Construction is made specially with Argon gas fill which will lower the harmful UV rays from the sun by up to 95%. You'll say goodbye to burn and bleaching of your floors. You won’t have to close all the windows either to keep the cool in during the summer or the heat in during the winter. You can let all that light in without compromising the energy efficiency of your house. With specialized measurements and excellent installation you’ll get a door that sits perfectly in its place which will keep your house at a more stable temperature year round. This means more money in your pocket from all the energy savings. Another great surprise you can look forward to with every Patio Door sold by Conservation Construction is our limited lifetime warranties which are also transferable!!! WOW! What kind of a company is this anyway? You must be thinking, right? A company that sticks behind our amazing products--that’s what kind of company we are. The best part is that each and every sliding glass patio doors is customizable to your exact specifications so that you get hardware, locking systems, and glass that works with your own design.   If you are unsure whether it is time for an upgrade, read our blog, When To Replace Your Patio Doors, to learn the warning signs and benefits of installing new patio doors.   In conclusion, new patio doors are an idea that is achievable. Would you like the look of elegance of the French countryside in your own home? Natural light without all the heat? Then do as the French would and say Oui to this luxurious beautiful option for your entryway, patio doors or inside your home. First, a little history lesson. Where did these doors get their name? France of course. It is said they come from the early 16th to 17th century when France was at war with Italy. After the French won victory over the Italians, the former brought with them some Renaissance artworks as well as some architectural ideas. This Renaissance style focused on proportions and symmetry and placed a specific emphasis on light. The French incorporated this pattern on their doors. Hence the name French Doors! The French found that glass running down the length of the door was the perfect solution for the lack of natural light.  French Doors today are still just as practical and stylish. Plus, they are a bit more energy efficient than they were back in the 17th century. Our French Doors from Provia and Conservation Construction can be manufactured into 6 main configurations available for each type. You get to be the creative genius behind your door. You can pick and customize your ideal front door by; choosing the color, the number of panels, and hardware style. You can choose between just one front door or French doors in these 6 main configurations.   Just the Doors The Doors with a sidelite on each side Just the doors with a transom over the top The doors with one sidelite and a transom The Doors with a sidelite on each side and a transom The Doors with a sidelite to the right or left Each door, glass, sidelite and transom are built to last a lifetime, and are Energy Star Certified. This means with one purchase you’ll lower your energy bills and add beauty to your home all at once. Talk about getting two amazing things for the price of one. Not to mention all of our glass includes the lowest possible U factor which means our glass will protect your furniture and rugs from fading and keep your home at a consistent temperature. We also offer 3 different styles: single entry, center hinged, or true French. Who wouldn’t want a new door if these come free with the purchase? Also free with your purchase our limited lifetime manufacturing warranties which are transferable. Our French Doors are customized to your home.  We build these doors to be strong and durable, and allow for the easiest maintenance and ease of operation.  You’ll never have to paint your door again! We also include a three-point locking system to ensure the stability mentioned above. In high school I took 4 years of French lessons and I hardly remember a thing. I could really only tell you how to say hello and goodbye. But trust me when I say everyone will remember the beauty of these French Doors, including you. They will be energy efficient and elegant for years to come. So you’ll save money over the long run.  Invest in your home today.      Has a recent hail storm blown through and in the process damaged part or all of your siding? You are not alone. There are dozens of other houses in the Denver Metro area that have been affected by this too. Hail damage brings down the value of your home and makes the curb appeal worse which is a double whammy for you.

Before you report the damage of your roofing and siding to your insurance company read ahead to know which siding will work best in the future to prevent that storm damage from ever happening. This way you won’t worry next time hail is coming because your siding will withstand the hail test. This is not always an easy test to pass as you might know.

Wind can whip hail right into the side of your house. Within minutes siding can be destroyed. Wood and Vinyl sidings are the easiest to chip, crack or break making it easy for water to get inside or underneath your siding. Once this happens, it’s only a matter of time before water can damage the foundation causing even worse problems.

So which siding is the best for your home so hail damage is a thing of the past? Both Fiber Cement Siding and Cedar Ridge Siding are the best choices for hail resistance. The key to both these products in hail is their durability and rigidity.  Fiber Cement Siding is composed of sand, silica, glass, cement, and cellulose fibers. This results in a very dense rigid siding which doesn’t dent, chip or crack even upon impact. Special heating techniques of the paint on Fiber Cement allow it to resist chipping or peeling. Lastly it is extremely moisture resistant, so rain and hail will not be a problem. It’s safe to say this siding will stop damage and fading in its tracks.

Cedar Ridge Siding is also a comparable choice to Fiber Cement. It is extremely impact resistant and able to resist winds of up to 160 mph. It has and is the only siding with molded foam. This unique makeup will insulate and prevent any water from becoming trapped underneath the siding. Not only will this siding stand up to anything thrown its way, it will also save you a ton of money year round on energy bills. Its added insulation will also reduce the noise in your home by up to 45%. How crazy is that?

Lastly, both options above come in a multitude of color options so you can pick whichever matches your unique style. Both Cedar Ridge and Fiber Cement are great options for the Colorado homeowner. They are both resilient to hail and strong winds and hold up well in winter and summer. Both require a very low amount of maintenance over their life. Each include the lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.

Therefore if your old wood or aluminium siding is damaged, file a claim, call Conservation Construction, then get a free quote to replace all that old siding and give yourself and your house a break. We know you don’t want to look at that old siding everyday. And why wait until it causes more damage down the line? Let your insurance claim work for you.

Get a free consultation as soon as possible. Save yourself money with new energy efficient siding which will protect your house from this sort of damage in the future. For more information about these unique products contact us by phone or go online to conservationconstruction.com for more information. Thanks for reading this article. We hope you are a reader next time too.

Fibro is not a term used by today's hipsters to say hello and it’s also not a term used to describe some weird suburb of Denver. It’s actually a term used for Fiber Cement Siding, aka James Hardie Siding. It’s also a way to see a huge improvement on the outside of your house. So, in terms we can understand, Fibro your house up!

So what exactly is James Hardie Siding?

Cement and cellulose fibers are the physiological make up of James Hardie Siding. Its unique composition makes it extremely resistant to fire, termites, impact, and rot. Fiber Cement Siding is a very heavy product and requires two people just to carry the uncut sheets. It is also fairly difficult to install because of this weight. It requires one person to hold the sheets while another person hammers it in place. You can think of James Hardie Siding much like Redwood trees which have shallow root systems. One tree on its own could not stand up to strong winds, instead these trees roots intertwine for miles with other redwood roots for stability during storms. It is its calculated installation process that makes it virtually indestructible which is great news for you.

These “external cladding” products need very little maintenance over the life of the product and can come pre-stained or pre-painted. They are also extremely impact resistant once installed properly giving your home, and you, the protection it needs. There is no other type of siding out there that is truly comparable to Fiber Cement. It truly is “its own material.”

James Hardie is energy efficient too. Homeowners save an additional 30% off their energy bills on average when installing this material.  Who knew your siding could be costing you so much money?

At Conservation Construction we include limited lifetime transferable warranties which means that not only will your siding last a lifetime, so will it’s warranty if anything goes wrong.

All of the properties of James Hardie encompass just how durable and beautiful it is on each and every home. Choose from an array of vibrant colors to match each and everyone’s personal taste. Visit our website today for more information at conservationconstruction.com.

Hopefully this article cleared up what James Hardie is if you didn’t know before. Thanks as always for reading.

On the tech side, Cedar Ridge’s graphite- with enhanced insulation properties made with Neopor—is an ingredient that aids in the absorption and reflection of radiant heat great for energy efficiency. Plus Cedar Ridge insulated siding is the only siding out there with molded foam, essential to a complete moisture management system. Each individual piece of ridge composite siding will have noise reduction properties to create a calm and quiet atmosphere for you and your family. Reducing noise by up to 45%.

On top of all the incredible properties above, it is 240% more impact resistant than fiber cement siding. Cedar Ridge is virtually maintenance-free, never needs painting and is able to withstand hurricane-force winds up to 200 mph. Now that’s some solid core siding!

So are you blushing? No you aren’t, that is just the amazing hues of color Cedar Ridge Siding has to offer. Just check out this color chart below!

Types of siding, Conservation Construction
Types of siding, Conservation Construction

  1. Thatch is an ancient and very widespread building material used on roofs and walls. Thatch siding was made with dry vegetation such as long straw, water reeds, or combed wheat reed. The materials are overlapped and weaved in patterns designed to deflect and direct water.
  2. Wood shingles or irregular cedar "shake" siding was used in early New England construction, and was revived in Shingle Style and Queen Anne style architecture in the late 19th century.
  3. Wood siding in overlapping horizontal rows or "courses" is called clapboard, weatherboard (British English), or bevel siding which is made with beveled boards. Wood siding can also be made of naturally rot-resistant woods such as redwood or cedar. Conservation Construction in fact does sell Cedar Ridge Siding which is exclusive to our company.
  4. According to the U.S. Census Bureau about 33 percent of the new single-family homes constructed  were clad in vinyl siding, making it the number one exterior siding choice.
  5. Aluminum siding with a baked-on color finish was introduced in 1947 by Jerome Kaufman. He learned the process by watching how the exteriors of planes were painted during World War II. Kaufman and a group of contemporaries formed Alside Siding, which became one of the largest producers of aluminum siding in the country.
  6. The mid-1980s brought another entrant to the exterior siding market: fiber cement. James Hardie Inc., an Australian company, developed the product that quickly gained a reputation for its realistic wood-like appearance and long-term durability. While many other companies now produce the material, Hardie is still identified so strongly with it that many contractors refer to all fiber cement products as "Hardieboard." We too sell “James Hardie” siding at Conservation Construction.
  7. Some of the people coming to America were from England (where ship building had been around for centuries).  Ship builders were very good at using planks of wood nailed to a frame to make strong ships. So they adapted the ship building techniques to home building.  They used boards to make the house frames and then nailed long planks of wood to the frames. It looked like the side of the old wooden sailing ships. This became known as the ship-lap technique.  And the nailing of long horizontal boards on houses became known as 'ship lap' siding or just 'lap' siding.
  8. Cedar siding has been the wood siding of choice for hundreds of years because of its natural beauty and low maintenance.
  9. Today's vinyl siding looks just like real wood, doesn't rot, termites won't eat it, requires very little maintenance and upkeep, doesn't need to be painted like real wood (we too sell this siding if you are interested in this).
  10. Warranties offered by vinyl manufacturers are generally lifelong and transferable.
  11. Decades ago, asbestos was widely used in home construction due to its low price and ability to fireproof the walls, attic and foundation of a house. Once asbestos became known as a health hazard, it was no longer put to use in new construction. However, there are older homes built before the 1970s in which asbestos was used in the siding, roofing and insulation materials
  12. Vinyl siding usually comes in thicknesses of .035 to .055 inches thick, and most quality brands have a thickness between .040 to .048 inches. Generally, the thicker, the better
  13. Most siding installation is rated for winds up to 110 mph

Thanks for checking out our special edition of Conservation Construction of Texas Labor Day Special! And thanks to all the businesses out there who gave their employees (including me) a well deserved break on Labor Day. And here’s one last comic strip for you for making it to the end of this article. I hope this makes you laugh!

We all saw these books as kids sitting on a shelf in a library or in the book store. They usually had a yellow cover with black letters. Shakespeare for Dummies, or Photography for Dummies, these were just a few I remember from high school. I’d thought I’d apply this concept to this next article. It seems like when I worked in a leasing office renting apartments out to individuals it was always overwhelming for them. They never knew which were the right questions to ask when shopping around for apartments. I found myself asking a lot of the wrong questions myself when looking for a home. This can be true too when shopping around for windows. So let’s go over the commonly overlooked items when shopping for replacement windows, what questions to ask, and really which windows will fit best with your home.

So what is the single most important question to ask when looking for new windows? For me it would be what kind of glass the company you are looking at installs. Where is the glass manufactured, where is it distributed from, and what kind of properties does this type of glass hold? Just a small list of good items to ask when looking for new windows are:

Again, these terms may sound technical but any window manufacturer selling windows in the business should have the answers to these simple questions about the glass they are selling, if they don’t, don’t walk, run in the other direction. Other great questions to ask when wanting to replace your existing windows with new are:

Lastly be upfront and honest with how you want your installation to go. Is the company you are working for customer service oriented? Are they going to take care of you for the life of the window? Lifetime warranties are also a plus when shopping around in case anything goes wrong with the window. Ask step by step how their process works. What do they do first and how do they assure accuracy with measurements and installation so that everything is level and square? What options do they have for windows frames as far as colors and type of wood? All of these are amazing questions to ask when looking for new windows.

So remember what new windows are like nowadays. They don’t include rough openings, nail holes or ugly beads of caulk. Good windows have a new age, revolutionary, better quality manufactured window. They have everything I’ve listed above and more. Windows are more advanced and technologically sound. They are beautiful and will add a face lift to any home bringing brightness into your life. They may even put a smile on your face, and who doesn’t love that?

I hope this article has helped you navigate through these confusing waters of window installation, and what questions to ask a professional when shopping around for new windows.

Until next time . . .

Ever wonder why you can hear every truck, car, semi, voice and any other noises coming into your home while you are trying to get some quality quiet time. It’s not always about location, location, location, as realtors would lead you to believe. Noise is everywhere whether you live in a big city or a small suburb. Talk about forward expansion, every community I know of in Denver is growing faster than corn which means just as much noise pollution is getting into your home as there is traffic doubling on the road. I don’t know about you, but silence is very underrated. It’s sometimes nice just to sit at my table for breakfast and meditate in the quiet. It’s becoming harder and harder to find a space where you can think and find the silence. In my opinion your home should be one of those places. If it’s not a sanctuary away from all the noise there is a serious problem. Every house I’ve lived in my entire life has been flooded with sounds from the highway or road outside. It’s like people are up 24/7 even though I am not.

So exactly what does it take to get some peace and quiet with the house you’re in without having to move? It might have something to do with the windows in your home. Existing windows that have air gaps open your home to a slur of sound waves.

And Soundproofing a room won’t make a difference for the entire house. Sound transmissions from outside can go through the tiniest gaps in windows and permeate the into your home. This kind of noise is enough to make anyone go crazy over a prolonged amount of time. No residential window blocks all sound, all the time. “Soundproof” is shorthand for noise reduction windows that block up to 90% to 95% of noise coming through windows.

What most people might not know is that sounds with low frequencies, like garbage trucks grinding trash, are harder to block than sounds with higher frequencies, like birds chirping. The acoustics industry makes soundproof window shopping easier by rating the sound-stopping quality of windows on a sound transmission class (STC) scale; the higher the number, the more a window inhibits sound. Your basic, single-pane window has an average STC rating of 27; a dual pane window has an average STC rating of 28. Soundproof windows, however, have STC ratings of at least 45, and some climb to the mid-50s, which block as much as 95% of noise. You don’t have to grow increasingly aggravated by the noise on a daily basis there are a few solutions you can try on your own that might help reduce the sound if it is coming through the windows.

If you are comparing performance and durability, explore What Are The Best Windows For Colorado? and Best Windows For Colorado to discover which window styles stand up best to the region’s climate.

How do Windows Block Sound?

To reduce sound, you must create a barrier between the sound and ear that captures the sound. Homes do that with walls, roofs, and windows that block sound waves from entering.

To increase a window’s ability to block sound and increase its STC rating, the window manufacturer must:

At Conservation Construction our Conservation windows could reduce the noise in your home. You won’t have to use soundproofing techniques or spend hours prepping your windows. At Conservation Construction our windows already come with sound blocking glass which is not only crystal clear but energy efficient as well. We also customize all our windows to fit to your home’s specifications which means a tight seal which will stop sound in its tracks. Conservation Construction Lifetime Warranty coupled with Screen and Glass Breakage is standard on all Conservation windows and patio doors.

So you hear that noise now? Neither do I. If it was your two next door neighbors having a fight again you won’t even know that it was going on with our windows. Huh? Is what you could be saying when you hear your neighbors outside having an argument. Fix this but something like this.

When I first moved into my house the most blatantly apparent problem was the windows. Not only did they have cracks and latches that would not work, but every window in the house had its seal broken. Let me tell you. I had no idea what this meant for me when I first moved in. As I would find out later (the joys of being a homeowner) that the washer and dryer were also malfunctioning which meant we had a humidity problem as well which only made the windows worse.

You may be asking yourself how you can even tell if you have a broken window seal? For those of us know what these look like it is not hard to spot. Have you ever driven past a house or lived in a house (like me) that looks like it has a permanent fog or condensation on the glass? Let me tell you this has nothing to do with the amount of windex you have cleaned with and everything to do with the panes of glass and the air between the seal of the window.

These failed seals mean every energy saving property your windows might have had in them, i.e. argon gas that helped protect the inside of the glass and your house, has escaped and allowed moisture to enter into the gap between the two windows. Although there are plenty of articles/videos out there to walk you through how to clean the inside of the windows, believe me it’s a lot easier on the tutorials than in real life. Glass seals are not meant to function broken. Window seal fails cause outside air to get in with ease making it hard to maintain a consistent temperature in your home.

Although window seal failures might be a common occurrence in homes this is now how they were meant to function. Once a seal around the perimeter of glass is broken it doesn’t matter if you live in a mild climate or not no matter how moist the air is the water will get between the panes of glass and fog up the inside of the panes causing an eyesore along with poor energy efficiency.

At Conservation Construction we don’t want you to have to live with these type of windows. We want your windows to seal in the heat when it’s cold and keep the heat out when it’s hot. Who wants to live in a house where all the energy savings are just leaving your house and literally vanishing into the air? I don’t want this for you or for me.

With our Conservation windows whether you choose; single pane, double or triple pane those broken seals will be a thing of the past. Each replacement window we construct and manufacture with Anlin is a insulated glass unit. Which means your house will seal in all the energy and be the most efficient than any other window manufacturer out there. It also means that moisture will not get into the seal and with our warranties if anything does break down, we’ll fix it so this broken sea problem will be a thing of the past. We also use low emissivity glass and Easy Clean Glass coating. These two things mean that sunlight can come in without jeopardizing energy efficiency and with Easy Clean Glass you’ll have a window that is debris resistant so the outside of your windows will practically clean themselves.

So instead of watching video after video of how you are going to figure out how to clean that infinitesimal gap between two panes of glass in your windows, think about how much time you really want to spend and how much effort you want to put into working on those windows when they aren’t working for you. Keep in mind the ease of operation, energy efficiency, and how clean your house could be if you just install new windows instead. Once you think about these benefits I’m sure you’ll not want to spend that excess amount of time trying to clean and instead use that for a better purpose--like reading that book, or memorizing the lyrics to that song you like, or watch that youtube video you had put in your que.

Let’s start with my father-in-law. He’s a very clean meticulous individual who has exactly one philosophy in life when purchasing anything. He’s said this philosophy to me on multiple occasions most recently with home-improvement tools that you would buy. “If you spend a little more, it’s likely to last you a lifetime. If you take care of it you’ll never have to purchase that item again.” We’ve all been there. I’ve been there before too, we are a little short on cash so we buy the cheaper option. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. I’ll purchase a similar albeit “cheaper” item as my father-in -law and his item seems to last and last while mine breaks down three months later and I’m rushing to the store to buy this item again. It happened to me so often in fact, that now I will purposefully buy the item that is slightly more expensive to ensure that the item will last, instead of just saving me a bit of money up front. That way I don’t ever have to buy that item again. I’m not saying you should do this for everything you purchase (the dollar store has cheap wrapping paper and door prizes for parties if you are in a pinch), but I will not use “The Dollar Store” any longer for dish soap or kitchen supplies (that pizza cutter only lasted a week).

If you don’t get where I’m going with this for you and your replacement windows it will be even more apparent to you after this article is done. Especially if you pay slightly more for a product that is higher quality, better made, overall a better product, this will be the only time you have to purchase that item. So the 20-100 dollars you’d spend extra on that griddle for your house will last you a lifetime as long as you maintain its cleanliness.

The same is true for your windows. While other window companies have the cheapest options out there, make sure you-- to paraphrase Ice Cube “Check yourself before you wreck yourself” -- when purchasing windows. You don’t want to get into a situation where you have cracking glass and windows which wear down just as quickly as you bought them.  In the long run you might be better suited with this Meghan Trainor lyric instead “I deserve Better!” If you choose a higher quality window which might only cost you a little bit more over the life of your house, it’ll equate to higher quality windows, energy savings that only go down over time, and a higher equity over the life of your house. If you want the same high quality windows in 20 years that you spend money on today then choose Conservation Construction. If you want the existing windows you have now, choose a different company. I’m being a little dramatic here, but I also could not be more serious.

At Conservation Construction the ease of operation for your windows, how energy efficient they are, everything down to the how maintenance free they are is our utmost priority to provide for our customers. That’s why our Conservation windows have the biggest U-Factor of any manufacturer out there which means they let the most light in without letting the heat in with the sunlight. All the types of windows we sell here at Conservation Construction, vinyl windows, double hung windows, single hung, bow, come with Low-E and Easy Clean Glass and limited lifetime warranties. Which means your windows will practically clean themselves with our Easy Clean coating and are guaranteed to keep your rooms at a consistent temperature with our Low-E. If you choose our double hung windows they open from the inside too, which means you can clean them with ease. Other “cheaper” options cannot guarantee these same things. We are so confident about the quality of our windows. Which is why we offer the warranties we do and a comprehensive service and repair department. In case anything ever goes wrong with your windows, we will be there to make sure you are happy with them.

As I sit in my house and write this article, staring out my windows as I take in the beauty of this world and this life, it is all the more apparent to me how important natural light is to my mental health and well being. How important it is to appreciate the little things and be grateful for everything we have. To take care of the things that are important to us like our loved ones and our home. I hope this article has spread a little sunshine your way and I hope you let Conservation Construction let some light into your home. I’m sure you’ll be happy you did. The views with our windows will be the same year after year and we hope these little things, which make big impacts in your life, will put a smile on your face. Most of all I truly appreciate anyone who takes the time to read these articles. You are what keeps our business thriving and keeps my passion for writing alive.

The weather was great this season until last week when it wasn’t. I dread seeing the storms coming in not because we don’t need rain, but because my windows have been leaking. I am the towel and bucket lady of the neighborhood who goes around to each window and starts to lay the groundwork for another rainy day in my house. When most people can sit back and enjoy a quiet afternoon storm, I have to be concerned about more weather stripping to my windows, or how I’m going to stop “that new water leak.” Heavy rain storms are the worst because I always find a new leak in a different window. The first time we realized we needed window replacement was after a long weekend away. We came back to water just sitting in our garden window. We had to caulk to fix this first window, but this only resolved the problem for a short amount of time. By the next storm the frame and walls were sopping wet.

Leaky windows will be the least of your concerns once the water starts getting in. Rotting, mold, and a entire onslaught of other problems can arise if you don’t solve the problem right away. Trust me I know how painful and gut-wrenching it is to have to consider even having to spend money on windows. I’m the biggest penny pusher in the world. On the nice days does it really seem to matter if you have old frames or weeping holes? You wouldn’t think so, right? The truth is just because you are not seeing the water get in on the good days it doesn’t mean that the holes are causing other problems like letting all the energy out of your home. My house was built back in the 80’s and had never had any new window replacement.

The good news is that new window installation is more streamlined and easy than it has ever been before. Windows are more affordable than you previously thought so you don’t have to break the bank to ensure that your home is protected from the weather. At Conservation Construction we have worked with Anlin windows to create the ultimate best window for your home. Our Conservation windows redefine the standards for quality and energy efficiency. We searched and worked extensively to develop our home windows. We made sure they would incorporate the numerous exclusive enhancements we know were necessary to build a window that would meet the challenges facing Colorado homeowners. Our windows are completely customizable to how you want them, down the the sizing, color of our window frame, operation, and type of glass you want. Our windows are also easy to maintain and clean because of our use of Easy Clean Glass which is ultra smooth to prevent debris from sticking to the windows.

On top of our windows lasting a lifetime, each window is independently inspected and tested to ensure structural integrity, thermal performance, water resistance, and high wind loads. They also come with lifetime warranties and will allow for a consistent room temperature so you don’t have to run your furnace or AC more than you have to. Your windows will shine for the entire life of the window and last against whatever weather comes your way.

Our customers keep coming back and recommending us to friends and family because of our commitment to stand behind our work.

Don’t do what I did for so long. Try and opt for a more long term plan than simply towels and bucket as someone who did that for such a long time, let me just say to you save yourself the hassle.  If you’d rather have the rain water stay out and have a peace of mind enter instead, call conservation construction today for a new way to think about your home. I promise you we can help you find a better solution to your window problems. You can also visit us online at conservationconstruction.com.

Understanding Door Energy Efficiency Terms

As a writer for Conservation Construction I found myself getting a little bogged down with all the technical terms they were using on a daily basis. There are so many in fact, I decided to write an article about the various “Technical Terms” I didn’t understand. Now I can relay just what these terms mean to you the reader. Do any of you get as excited about learning as I do? I hope so, because I’ll be jamming a lot of information in this next article. So gear up for a information adventure.  By the end of this article I am confident that you will have a better understanding of what quality in a door actually means.

What Is U-Factor?

So let’s start with the first confusing term I came across in my studies with Conservation Construction.

It’s big, it’s bold, it’s this way for a reason, it’s the

U-Factor

Yes, ladies and gentleman that is how you spell it too (for all those grammar enthusiasts out there like me). What exactly does U-Factor mean when we talk about our doors? You might have jumped to driving here--and no, it’s not whether you’re capable of making a u- turn in your car. It’s also not anything like the It factor they talk about on American Idol. It’s not even all the attributes that make you you (even though it sounds like that). This U-Factor is, simply put, a performance rating?

Why NFRC Ratings Matter for Doors

Who rates the performances of our doors? Well, I’m glad you asked, it is actually the NFRC. And if you’re as fond of acronyms as me (just kidding, I hate them) then you already know that it stands for the National Fenestration Rating Council NFRC, get it? You may be asking yourself why you should care. I know I was asking myself that same question. What’s this boring council have to do with my doors? Actually, quite a lot. You see if your door is rated correctly it will save you money, and most importantly it’s assured to be Energy Star Qualified! The NFRC label can and will be found on every Energy Star Efficient approved door. Each Energy Star Label ensures that your door meets each of the following five categories:

  1. U-Factor
  2. SHGC or Solar heat Gain Coefficient
  3. Air Leakage
  4. Visible Transmittance
  5. Condensation Resistance

How U-Factor Measures Door Insulation

So back to that U-Factor from before because we kind of got off topic. The U-Factor measures the rate of heat transfer, and tells you how well the door insulates. U-Factor values generally range from 0.25 to 1.25 and are measured in Btu/h·ft²·° The lower the U-Factor the better door insulates. Which should make the U-Very-happy factor increase. It’s even better news that our front doors and door systems had the lowest U-Factor rating at just .10 which means they are extremely insulating and we received the award for Energy Star Partner Of the year for energy performance.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient Explained

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures how well a product can resist unwanted heat gain, which is especially important during summer cooling season. The lower the number here below 1 the better. Our ProVia doors measured at .16.

What Air Leakage Means for Your Door

Air Leakage measures how much air will enter a room through the door. The lower the number the fewer drafts you will experience.

Visible Transmittance and Natural Light

Visible Transmittance measures how well a product is designed to effectively light your home with daylight, potentially saving you money on artificial lighting. The higher the number, the more natural lights is let in.  Our doors scored a .17 on this front.

Condensation Resistance and Climate Performance

Condensation Resistance measures how well a door resists the formation of condensation on the inside surface. This rating differs based on separate climate zones where the door is installed. CR is expressed as a number between 1 and 100. The higher the number, the better a product is able to resist condensation.

Energy Efficient Door Options From Conservation Construction

I can still recall the first time I saw stained glass. As the sun broke through the horizon, it cascaded over the bright colors causing a rainbow to appear on the walls. For some reason those colors made me feel comforted and brought me to my happy place. The detail behind each piece was all quite unreal. How did this regular ordinary glass get transformed into something so stunning right before my eyes? It reminds me of my childhood to think about it now. As a kid stained glass or decorative glass seemed like something that would take a long time to learn how to make, not only that, but it would be very expensive to own for your own home. We all love our pets especially our dogs who keep us company and can protect our home while we are out. As a dog owner myself, it is hard to find entry doors that accommodate my pets needs along with my own. I always find myself rushing home at the end of the day to let my dog in or out depending on the weather. On a daily basis I find myself walking back and forth time after time to either let my dog out or in. Trust me it gets old after a while constantly walking to the door to let my pet in or out. Does anybody else know where I’m coming from? Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a door that already accommodated your pets needs, instead of the other way around? A true pet door that was built for their comfort and yours? Today is the future, because now you can order your doors with the dog door already inside, no muss not fuss.

At Conservation Construction all of our entry doors come completely customizable including an accessory for your best friend, a dog door! All of our accessory dog doors are PetSafe and are factory installed, which mean they come to you completely built to your specifications. When your dog {or cat, because our doors are customizable for cats as well) needs to go outside he can simply let himself out without disrupting your conversations, or dinner, or your you time. The itsy bitsy spider went up the waterspout and into your window and through that crack. Eeek! What is that? How did another Spider in my house again? That’s what I keep thinking when I see one crawling down my mirror in the morning or running across my floor at night. It gives me the heebie jeebies.

We all know why Little Ms. Muffet was scared of that spider who sat down beside her. Spiders or even bugs in general can add that sudden shock to your day when they sneak up your wall or on your leg without you noticing. It’s best when windows and doors can keep these sort of pests outside. I for one can notice a spider a football-length away and in my house with my walls painted white. It doesn’t take long for me to jump on the chair and start screaming at my husband to “Kill that Thingy.” When it comes to pest control your windows should be working with you, not against you like mine were. Window screens should prevent bugs from getting inside your home, but what about the windows themselves. If you windows be open or closed there should be a level of barrier between you and the bugs of the world.

Let’s face it, no amount of trips to the hardware store for bug spray or excessive amounts of vacuuming them up is going to prevent them from getting inside. Old windows are just an easy access point for all the bugs of your life. If your windows don’t seal properly it’s basically a free invitation to the party inside your house. Trust me, with that kind of party Little Ms. Muffet won’t be attending.

If you are having a pest problem, replacement windows and doors might be something to consider. Unless you live in a brand new home that is tightly constructed with no air leaks whatsoever, chances are your home is not bug proof. With insects being able to slip through cracks as thin as a credit card, you’ll want a more hardy seal of approval. Home windows are especially vulnerable because there are more windows in a house than doors. Screens and windows in your house now might not fit in the frame tightly causing holes where bugs can easily enter through. If your current windows are old and require extensive work, consider replacing them entirely. At Conservation Construction we provide windows with a number of important benefits that go beyond bug proofing. If the pest problem has gotten out of hand however, consider hiring one of the best pest control companies in Lakewood, CO.

Our windows cut down energy loss saving you money on your energy bill. Our windows also cut down the amount of noise coming into or out of your home. They also increase the value of your home making it easier to sell because homebuyers rate energy efficiency as a crucial feature when considering buying a home. Lastly, new windows fit tightly into the exterior frames which eliminate the threat of bug infestations. Which means our windows are practically bug proof. Who doesn’t want that?

If moisture is also becoming a problem, read our blog, Rain Getting In Windows?, to learn what causes leaks and how to protect your home from water damage.

We offer a variety of windows which are customizable to your exact specifications. Whatever color or size you need, we have options for you. These include; sliding windows, bow windows, and double hung windows. We searched extensively to find only the best manufacturers for our windows to provide to our customers. All of our products are backed by limited lifetime warranties to ensure that those bugs stay out and your windows last a lifetime. Have you ever driven past a house and thought, holy cow that place needs some fixin up. What happened to its paint over the years?  Owners like you and me sometimes don’t realize that adding yet another coat of paint to the outside of the home might not be the solution to the problem. What you might not know is paint may not help at all.

Aging siding is not only an eyesore for the neighbors, but it is also allows the elements access into the depths of your home. No matter how many coats of paint on a home’s exterior it won’t help if the siding has worn down over time.

The exterior of your home is extremely important to maintain as it is your home’s first line of defense against the harsh Colorado weather. You might just need another coat of paint, you might not. Before replacing your siding or just repainting though, perform an at home test and look for the following:

  1. Warped panels
  2. Mold or mildew on the panels (if mold or mildew is found this might be an indication that water is getting inside the house)
  3. Peeling or loose paint (could mean that water has already penetrated the siding)
  4. Bubbles (this can point to poorly installed panels, and may be collecting water in pockets underneath the surface)

Let me tell you a story about your new life. In your new life you will never have to paint your home again if you decide to go with Conservation Construction siding products. “No Way!” You must be saying to yourself right now.

Crazy, right? I know. Please, hold back your enthusiasm until the end of the the next paragraph where I’m really going to blow your mind. To make my point even clearer, here’s list of things siding will add to your home:

Are you asking yourself, is it time to get a new door? Do fiberglass doors come already painted to your desired color, or do you have to paint it after it arrives? It seems like it would defeat the purpose of getting a low maintenance material like fiberglass if you had to turn around and paint it, right? At Conservation Construction we completely agree.

Are you thinking about changing your entry door with a different kind of exterior door? Let me tell you a secret of the trade . . . fiberglass is the new go-to door. Fiberglass doors might be the best option for you for just how energy efficient and durable they are. What are fiberglass doors? They are high efficiency doors thermally insulated to keep what’s outside out and what’s inside in. At Conservation Construction our high quality doors not only resemble real wood doors and are extremely durable, but are the easiest entry doors to maintain. Fiberglass doors also offer cold weather advantages as opposed to steel which is less energy efficient.

So do they require painting?

This seems like a very simple question with a very simple answer, but actually there are two answers to this question.

Most manufacturers would like you to believe the answer is yes. Although other companies would require painting once every 18-24 months, conservation constructions doors work in an entirely different way. At conservation construction it is our topmost priority to ensure you have it easy for the life of your doors. Which is why we specialize in ProVia doors. What exactly are ProVia Doors? ProVia offers four lines of fiberglass professional-class entry doors that meet the highest standards for beauty, durability, security and energy efficiency.

Which means ProVia doors do not require extra coats of paint over the life of the door. That’s right, your entry door from Conservation Construction and ProVia will not require extra coats of paint over the lifetime of the door.

Why is this? Our entry doors come finished to the highest quality. This is because the craftsmanship built behind every door is our utmost priority. ProVia also offers complete creative control over picking the right door for you. Looking for a certain color to match your house the best? Or a very specific door size? Our entry doors are completely customizable to whatever style best fits your personality.  Our replacement doors are available in cherry, mahogany, oak, and so many others. We offer 7 stain finishes per series and can customize widths and heights for your doors up to 8 feet. How amazing is that? We want your entry door to not only be the most beautiful welcoming exterior door for your home, but we want it to last you a lifetime. With four different styles of fiberglass to choose from, you’re bound to find the door for you. ProVia offers four different types of doors to match your needs; Embarq; which has the top most energy efficiency, Signet; which offers the most accurate look of real wood, Legacy: which offers the most security for you and your family, and Heritage which offers elegance with wood grain finishes. Our doors and frames are made from materials that meet wind load standards to protect your home from the outside elements.

So what does this mean for you? Our smooth surfaces and quality materials make our doors not only easier for you to clean, but the coating will stand up after you clean the door for the entire life of the door.

Whether you are looking for a door to stand out with great curb appeal or to simply weather the test of time, we have the fiberglass door that meets both these standards. This means little maintenance and a great look for you over the lifetime of the door. Why stress about having to re-coat your door over and over again? With our lifetime limited warranties you won’t have to hassle with your doors, just sit back and admire them.

Please visit our website conservationconstruction.com for more information on these doors and how they can help your house become more elegant, energy efficient, and most of all the most secure while being the least maintained.

If you have ever looked into anything concerning your home, I am SURE you have heard the term "energy efficient." While it sounds catchy and appealing to the consumer, what exactly does it mean for a product to be "Energy Efficient?" Why should you, as a homeowner, concern yourself with the energy efficiency rating of a product?

The technical definition for energy efficiency is simply: a goal to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. It is basically a method of reducing energy consumption by using less energy to achieve the same output.

A big focus for this movement is to reduce the human carbon footprint.

Energy Efficiency, Energy Efficient, Energy, Energy Consumption, Consumption

The DoE says, "energy efficiency is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to combat climate change, clean the air we breathe, improve the competitiveness of our businesses and reduce energy costs for customers." By generating less energy, buildings emit fewer greenhouse gases, therefore improving environmental performance. So on a grander scale, "energy efficiency" was a movement beginning with large factories and buildings in mind. As the movement progressed however, and the technology to save energy advanced it became available to the consumer in the homeowner sector.

In terms of adding to or upgrading products of your home, the energy efficiency refers to how much energy your home uses (heating, cooling, electricity, water, etc) and the cost associated. How much does it cost you to heat your home in the winter or cool it during the summer? The more energy efficient the home, the less energy it will use to maintain a comfortable temperature and run your appliances (or whatever else needs energy). By using less energy, you are obviously going to save on the costs associated with it.

For example, with our energy efficient windows and siding, the insulating factors will end up saving you money by holding the hot air in during the winter, and keeping it out during the warmer months. The better insulated your home, the less hot air in the cold months (and cold air during the summer) you are going to need to generate. Creating this heat means using energy, whether it be electricity or oil (however you heat your home). Needing to create less heat means using less energy, which means lower heating/cooling bills.

"Energy Efficiency" is essentially a measurement associated with the need for less energy for your products to operate effectively. An energy efficient dryer might use less electricity. An energy efficient shower head might use less water. Energy efficient windows are going to keep out the drafts requiring you to turn up your heat.

Now that you understand what an energy efficient product is supposed to do, it might be a little easier to know what you want when replacing components (windows, siding, doors) on your home. At Conservation Construction, we have industry leading products in energy efficiency. The goal of our products is not only to look and function exceptionally, but it is also to save you money (and a few greenhouse gases) in the long run.

When it's time to replace the entry doors on your home, the most important thing for many homeowners is quality. Some people don't mind paying a little bit more on such an important aspect of their investment to make sure it is a high quality product. If you are wondering exactly where to go for that quality, look no further than Conservation Construction and our ProVia fiberglass entry doors. In all aspects, our ProVia doors give homeowners everything they could ask for in terms of visual appearance, durability and of course, energy efficiency.

One of the best parts of the entry door is the impact it can have on anybody entering your home. Since the entry door is the first impression of the house your guests (and yourself) will get, you want it to be visually appealing. ProVia fiberglass doors are among the most aesthetically appealing on the market. Each one is completely customized to your specifications. From size to color, and even hardware, ProVia allows each homeowner to create their own statement to anyone entering their home.

When shopping for anything of quality, you would assume durability would also play a big role. Why would you want to spend any money on something that simply isn't going to last? Lucky for you, that is a non issue with ProVia. Our entry doors are crafted out of carefully chosen materials that meet wind load standards (including hurricane-level winds). The frames are treated for protection against temperature shifts. We also offer ProVia storm doors that add another layer of protection without compromising the aesthetic appeal in the slightest. If you are still not convinced on the lasting nature of this product, ProVia offers a limited lifetime warranty on all of their products that also includes glass breakage.

Along with looking great and lasting, our ProVia entry doors offer another feature that has homeowners completely in love. That is, the energy efficiency properties of these doors. They are equipped with superior insulation properties that keeps heat in when you want it, and out when you don't. ProVia storm doors have a polyurethane core, combined with a Q-Lon weather stripping along the edges. Both of these together keeps energy leakage to a minimum, as well as keeping moisture out of your home. The boosted energy efficiency you gain from our storm doors is not simply speculation either, as ProVia was named the Partner of the Year of ENERGY STAR.

Although we are sure there are other brands of fiberglass entry door that can meet your needs, we KNOW that our ProVia entry doors will go beyond your expectations. The entry to your home will make that statement you are looking for, for a long time to come. As icing on the cake, the energy efficiency of this product will just about ensure that you save money on utility bills throughout the year! So basically the gorgeous new entry door you put into your home (that you will likely never have to replace) will end up paying for itself through the savings you gain in electricity and other utility costs.

The way a window is classified depends on the material that its framing is made out of. The framing material of a window not only makes up the perimeter frame, but the surrounding frames of the operable parts of a window as well.

Window framing is typically composed of either wood, aluminum or vinyl. So yes, a vinyl window is one where the framing is made up of vinyl!

Vinyl is the common name given to a polymer called Poly-Vinyl Chloride. There are SO many things that contain PVC, but in the case of the window specifically, the polymer (PVC) is blended with additives that allow it to be molded into window frames, and also helps to resist sun degradation. This process of creating a frame differs with other materials. For example, wooden and aluminum frames are created by cutting and bending metal to fit a window, or cutting the shape out of a larger piece of wood.

With Conservation Construction's vinyl window specifically, we take it to the next level. Besides just the vinyl framing, we implement our exclusive Conservation Glass System. We utilize the ultimate performance glass, insulating Argon gas fill, a triple seal structural foam spacer, and innovative Neat coating that let's nature clean your windows. So our specific, exclusive vinyl windows are perfect for the climate in Colorado.

Like every material, vinyl does have its pros and cons, especially when it comes to windows. Here is just a few of them:

Pros:

Cons:

Vinyl windows are lightweight, affordable, energy efficient and easy to install. This ease of installation will also lower labor costs significantly during the project, which will save you a TON of money (as labor cost is typically the same if not more expensive than the window itself). Taking all of the good and bad into account, as a homeowner looking to replace your windows you cannot go wrong with vinyl.

Despite Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow this year, it seem as though Spring will be upon us sooner rather than later. As the temperature increases, so do many of our moods and levels of ambition. As the snow clears and we begin to gather plans for the warm weather, many of us also assess the damage (if any) to our homes and decide on a few things we'd like to do to "gear up" for next year.

Whether your home took a beating this year or you just want to make some aesthetic upgrades to show off to your neighbors at the pool parties and barbecues, spring is the best season for the necessary replacements or home upgrades you are looking for.

If you try to install during the winter or summer months, you are going to run into a few issues. Obviously in the winter, Colorado experiences severe weather such as bitter cold, hail, and tons of snow. This is going to cause delays and rescheduling in your installation, which I am sure many homeowners would rather avoid. Less obvious however, the same delays can occur in the summertime. There will be some days where it is too hot for installers to work on your project, as well as a ton of competition as many other homeowners will be trying to get their projects done at the same time.

There are several reasons to upgrade your windows (and other areas of your home) when it is warm, but not too warm! First of all, when you replace windows at this time you won't be letting in the cold air of the winter, or hot air of the summer that is going to crank up your utility bills. Having a gaping hole in your home during the cold or hot months of Colorado is really never a good idea unless absolutely necessary.

For those who don't know, Caulk is a large part of the installation process for any facet of the home. You ideally want to apply the caulk between the temperatures of 40 and 80 degrees. It adheres better in warmth than it does in the freezing cold, but if it's too hot (80 or 90 degrees), then it will not cure properly.

Another reason to install in the spring is what contractors call the "movement of the substrate." Vinyl and aluminum tend to expand in the heat and contract in the cold. This could cause the caulk to crack and split the materials when the weather gets warmer (or colder if you install in the fall).

At Conservation Construction, we are here to start and finish your project any time of the year if that is what you desire. However, we recommend that for the smoothest and quickest installation process you take weather factors (especially in Colorado) into consideration!

If you are thinking about upgrading your windows, doors, or siding to give your home an aesthetic and energy efficiency boost for years to come, the best time to get your project started is sooner than you may think.

When the need arises to replace your siding, there are many different options for a homeowner to choose from. How do you know which one to pick? Which ones look the best? Which would work best for your home in particular? Hopefully I can answer a few of these questions for you. There are many different types, but 5 of them are most common. There have: steel siding, vinyl siding, fiber cement siding, wood siding, and James Hardie siding.

Steel Siding

Living in Colorado especially, steel siding is a great choice for any home mainly for its durability. It's no surprise that through the intensity of seasons we experience your siding can take a beating. Steel takes that beating better than any other material on the market, not to mention it is resistant to rot, insects that damage your home, and fires. The recent advancements in the aesthetic departments of steel siding also offer you a ton of attractive and customizable options. If you prioritize durability and low maintenance for your siding, steel may be the way to go.

Vinyl Siding

A bit more affordable than steel, vinyl siding is the perfect choice for homeowners who are looking for more customization at a lower price. Although it is not as durable as lets say steel, it is still a great insulator that keeps your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The options you have are endless, as it comes in numerous different textures, patterns and colors. It is virtually maintenance free because there is no paint, therefore never needs to be repainted!

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding is a combination of composite material made of cement reinforced with cellulose fibers. Similar to steel, it is very impact resistant. It can also be pre-stained/pre-painted to give of an appearance of wood, or you can wait until after installation to decide what you want it to look like. If you enjoy wood siding, but don't want to deal with the hassle that it brings, Fiber Cement is for you.

Wood Siding

If you don't mind constant repairs, an extremely high cost, yearly (sometimes more) maintenance, insect hazards and rotting, then the appearance alone of wood siding would be worth it for you. By far the most customizable, and simply beautiful type of siding, it is therefore the most expensive and has the most issues. With this particular kind of home product, the homeowner has to determine if the appearance is worth the headache. If you can answer that question with a yes, then wood siding is for you.

James Hardie Siding

James Hardie is simply a brand of Fiber Cement siding that we offer here at Conservation Construction. A bit more affordable, a better warranty, a bit more customization options and overall better performance than typical fiber cement brands make James Hardie one of our best siding options.

The key factors to look at when deciding what type of siding you want on your home are typically appearance, durability, maintenance, and cost. Each type obviously differs in these categories, but as a homeowner we are sure you will find one that fits your specific needs.

For anyone looking to replace the windows on their home, you should know that there are a few different materials to choose from, each with their own properties. For the purpose of this post however, let's focus on the most common: vinyl and aluminum.

There are many different ways to measure the positive and negative aspects of these types of windows, but we feel that the most important characteristics for the homeowner to know are more about the design, appearance, and durability. Let's go over each window in depth for you that way you can make a more informed decision when it comes time to replace your windows!

Design:

One of the most important aspects of the design of any home material is its energy efficiency. In this category, the vinyl window vastly outperforms its aluminum counterpart. Vinyl windows are industry leaders when it comes to being energy efficient, while aluminum conducts both heat and cold, allowing it right into your home when you don't want either.

When it comes to weight and strength, the aluminum window is more optimal. Aluminum windows weigh less than vinyl, yet are stronger. However, they are more prone to letting in outside noise, and have a higher cost than vinyl across the board.

Appearance:

While this category is purely up to the taste of the homeowner, there are still totally different features which should be understood before making a decision. When it comes to appearance vinyl windows usually are more attractive. The wood-grain appearance is a popular alternative to actual wood (which is extremely problematic), and many prefer it to the painted look of the aluminum windows as well. However, if you are looking for an exact color, you may be more interested in an aluminum window. Vinyl cannot be painted, so a color match may be impossible. Aluminum can be painted or powder-coated, providing the exact color you may want. But be wary, if the paint or coating chips, the aluminum underneath will be visible, which makes for one ugly looking window. Not to mention that aluminum corrodes over the years. This can be quite an eye sore later down the line. Not to mention new windows are more streamlined. With fewer components and easy operation vinyl windows are a breeze to clean.

Durability:

When it comes to durability there is almost no comparison. In terms of maintenance, vinyl windows require basically none. They are not painted so they never fade, the moving parts never require lubrication like aluminum, and they never pit or corrode. Aluminum windows however, if not maintained regularly, can be a nightmare. Since they are metal, they tend to pit, dent and corrode when exposed to the elements. The paint and powder-coating fades, and tends to chip so repainting will be a regular occurrence. The bottom line is that with aluminum windows, you will be out at least once a year checking for damage and repainting, while vinyl is just a "hang it and leave it" type of window.

The differences in vinyl and aluminum windows would personally make me lean heavily towards vinyl, but each homeowner is different. If you have an idea in your head that requires an exact color and look, and don't mind a little bit of maintenance (like many homeowners out there), an aluminum window may be right for you. As I said previously, the choice comes down to the taste and work ethic of the individual homeowner.

We encourage you to leave a comment on which window you prefer. Visit our website for more information.

Conservation windows are manufactured exclusively for Conservation Construction to our exacting standards with many features not available anywhere else. These feature are:

Those features sound a bit confusing, even to us, so allow me to explain some of them a little further. The Conservation GlassSystem consists of three parts: the argon gas fill, the Platinum Elite spacer, and Easy Clean Glass Coating.

The krypton/argon gas fill is a non-toxic, odorless, insulating invisible blend. This particular blend enhances total window U value performance by as much as 20% versus traditional air fill and up to 10% compared to argon fill.

The Platinum Elite Spacer is our exclusive revolutionary white silicone structural foam spacer. It's multi-layer mylar barrier provides triple seal performance, superior insulating gas retention and extremely low thermal transfer. This barrier also assures long-term durability, and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Easy Clean Glass is basic glass coated with a 2 different layers, the first being titanium dioxide. This layer reacts with sunlight to decompose organic materials on the glass, basically "cleaning" itself! The second layer is a silicon dioxide layer, which creates an ultra smooth surface and hydrophilic action to disperse water evenly or "sheet off." It's basically like having Rain-Ex built into your window!

To summarize, the Conservation windows can only be found here at Conservation Construction. These windows will save you money on utility bills by keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. They are also extremely low maintenance, and pretty much clean themselves. If that all wasn't good enough, they are backed by a lifetime warranty, making them the best replacement windows on the market.

Living in Colorado, we typically see the most extreme ends of the spectrum during just about every season. Brutal cold, golf-ball sized hail, tornadoes, flooding, drought, wildfires, and huge snowfalls are all fairly common in our state. The only natural disaster we have relatively avoided (cross your fingers) is large earthquakes.

It goes without saying, this intense weather can be damaging to many aspects of your home. Dented or bent siding, broken glass due to large-sized hail, burnt siding (or any other part of the home, really) as a result of wildfires, trees and/or limbs breaking windows, glass doors, and damaging siding, and total devastation from tornadoes are just a few examples of what has homeowners living out here uneasy.

However, it's not just these sudden events that can damage some important visual and structural aspects of your home. The bitter cold, heat, moist, dry and general climate changes can fade vinyl siding relatively quickly. It can also remove paint prematurely from any outside surface. Normal wear and tear as well as catastrophic events can make Colorado a frustrating environment to maintain a home.

That's where we at Conservation Construction come in. When we opened 3 decades ago, we specifically had the residents of this unpredictable yet beautiful state in mind. The durability of our Conservation patio doors and replacement windows can put our customers at ease, knowing the sizable investment they made in their home is going to last them more than just a couple of years. We know disaster can strike at any moment however, which is why all of our products are backed by a lifetime warranty. Our customers feel safe from any natural disaster when they choose us for their next home upgrade. We understand the weather in Colorado is tough, but that is why we made our materials and techniques tougher.

As you may know, when shopping for replacement windows there are many different options to choose from. Here at Conservation Construction, we offer just about all of these options. The Conservation-5 Series window we typically install are:

In order to help narrow down the choices for your next replacement, or to give you a better idea of what you may want for your home in the future, I will explain what each type of window looks like and how it functions.

Single Hung Window: The single hung is probably the most basic type of window you will find on today's average home. It is affordable, attractive, and extremely low maintenance. The single hung window is typically a vertically sliding window where the bottom sash slides up and down (thus opening the window) while the top stays fixed in place. it is pretty basic as far as a window goes.

Double Hung Window: The double hung windows are also very popular with today's homeowners for many of the same reasons as the single sash. While the double hung may look the same as its counterpart, both sashes of this variation are operable and can move up and down.

Bay Window: Here is where the styles start to get fun and add that unique aspect to your home's appearance. A bay window is a protruding construction usually consisting of 90, 135 and 150 degree angles. They are visually stunning from the outside as well as the inside. Bay windows offer an enhanced view from the room, as well as making it appear larger inside.

Bow Window: A bow window is simply a bay window that is curved instead of angled. They are designed to create a wider view of the outside, and typically contain four or more casement windows that join together to form an arch. Another gorgeous window that will add value to both the exterior and interior of your home.

Casement Window: Casement windows are classified as windows that are attached to the frame by hinges on the side. They are used either singly or in pairs with a common frame. These windows are opened and closed by operating a crank or lever placed around hand level, which is different than the typical sliding up and down of most models. This allows you to angle the window open inside or out, controlling the breeze you get in your home and allowing you to easily clean the outside.

Garden Window: The garden window's most common use is exactly how it got its name. This type projects outward, leaving a small shelf/display area that many homeowners use to display some plant-life. Now this space can obviously be used to display anything you choose, but the ability of the window to vent from the sides makes it perfect for feeding your plants all the air they need.

Sliding Window: The sliding window is a simple one to understand. It is essentially a double hung window that slides open horizontally instead of vertically. They are a nice change-up from the typical single or double hung window, and are also just as affordable.

Picture Window: The picture window is designed to give you a crystal clear and unimpeded view of the world outside your home. It is as if you were framing a picture of your view, hence where this type of window gets its name. A picture window is simply a large, usually frameless and grid-less glass window that creates a much clearer view of whatever is outside of your living room.

Although the number of options Conservation Construction offers for your replacement windows may get your head spinning, once it settles down you are able to completely customize your experience. There are so many variations and combinations of our different styles, you can create an exact replica of the home you have been fantasizing about.

If you are looking for something with a long life span and won't need as much maintenance, then a higher quality window will be the right choice for you. Built with premium grade vinyl, they will definitely outlast the builder grade windows by 10-15 years more. High quality windows like our  Windows are not only custom made for each opening of your home, but come with exclusive Easy Clean- a special coating that will keep your windows clean for longer without washing or cleaning them yourself.  Since they are custom made to your specifications you can choose your color, how they open, as well as how they operate. Our Windows also come with a 1 time transferable Lifetime Warranty. Yes, they can be more expensive at first. If you do the math on how long they last vs. cost, a lower grade window will end up costing just as much (or more) in the long run.

When looking for windows, you'll always be faced with a choice. Whether you choose inexpensive windows or high-quality grade windows, one thing is certain, you want to know the right choice for your home or even rental property.
Low quality windows (also known as builder grade) are one of the most readily available windows on the market. They are used for large construction projects and are basically a one-size-fits-all window. They can be limiting in the options you might want. Yes, they can be very cheap and can help with a quick renovation on a house that you might want to sell as soon as possible. Low quality windows tend to last about 10 years. This is half or even less than the life expectancy of a higher quality grade (about 20-25 years). Unfortunately, they are poorly constructed (aluminum windows, or wood windows) or use low grade window materials since they are mass produced and it's hard to have quality control over how many they produce. When it comes to reselling the home they also fall short in this aspect- in that they don't retain much of their value. They are good for flipping houses, a quick fix, or if you're on a tight budget.

Finally vinyl windows or fiberglass windows frame material is superior. It can come in multiple options like single hung or double hung, other cheaper options might not have multiple styles. Cheaper options also do not include energy star efficiency or even open outward. Our Conservation window brand offers all of the top options which will last you upwards of 20+ years.
