Sarah Josepha Hale played in making Thanksgiving a national holiday. Hale, a prominent 19th-century writer and editor, campaigned for the establishment of Thanksgiving as a national holiday for nearly 40 years.

She wrote numerous editorials and letters to political leaders advocating for a national day of thanksgiving. Finally, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln heeded her advice and issued a proclamation declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday

It’s not uncommon for people to consume more calories than usual during Thanksgiving, given the festive nature of the occasion and the tradition of enjoying a bountiful feast with family and friends.

Breaking the wishbone of the turkey is a Thanksgiving tradition for some. Two people each take one end of the wishbone, make a wish, and pull. The person with the larger piece is said to have their wish granted.
