Thanksgiving is almost here and I’m sure we’re all waiting in anticipation for the impending turkey (hopefully yours isn’t dry). Hopefully the conservation isn’t dry either. It you have a hard time communicating with your family and distant relatives you can try these conversation starers to keep the conversation spicy!
I tell you what, definitely don’t bring up how your mother’s turkey is more moist than your mother-in-law’s turkey. That never goes over well and in the grand scheme of things only gives animosity towards both mothers. I’m not saying this did or did not happen a couple Thanksgivings ago at my own feast. Instead, do remark on how good all the food is. Even if the food is terrible now is not the time to start bringing up things like that to your host (even if that host is yourself.)
Bring up the subject of whether or not people actually like green bean casserole. Although I am a huge fan of green bean casserole I know not everybody likes it. You could debate on the pros and cons of this Thanksgiving dish. This should take up at least 10 minutes of your time.
Another talking point I like to refer to is asking what people have been up to last year. Remember that people love talking about themselves so if you just ask them questions about them they tend to not be able to shut up. If you’re into listening (like me) then ask them questions galore. They will not only do most of the talking, they will think you are a great conversationalist for asking so many questions.
You can also bring up Thanksgiving related facts. Like Abraham Lincoln proclaiming it was an official national holiday back on October 3rd 1863. Or that There are four towns in the United States named “Turkey.” They can be found in Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina. Finally The tradition of football on Thanksgiving began in 1876 with a game between Yale and Princeton. The first NFL games were played on Thanksgiving in 1920. All these facts should get your guests talking at the very least.
The last conversation starter is to keep making toasts to what you’re Thankful for this is the entire point of thanksgiving after all isn’t it? Thank your Mother thank your Father. Be thankful for everyone in your life right now because you never know how long they are going to be there.
From all of us at Conservation Construction have a Happy Thanksgiving!
