Why Do Entry Doors Swing Inward?

This is a very smart question to ask when you are searching for a new front. We applaud you for being so diligent in your search for the best entry door. Does your current entry door swing inward? Why does your entry door swing inward? There are several answers to this question. Keep reading to learn more!

Colorado Specifics

While there are areas of the country that may vary, there is no universal building code that forbids the use of residential exterior doors that open outward. However, residents who live in Colorado are recommended to have an inswinging door. This prevents the occupants of the house from being trapped if there were to be a big snow storm. We’ve all seen pictures and videos of people opening their front door and having a huge pile of snow out front. An in swing door will at least allow you to get out of your house in times of need. This is the biggest consideration when getting a front entry door in the state of Colorado. At Conservation Construction we install doors that swing in for our climate.

Safety

Doors that open inwards are much easier to break down by fire crews to get into your property. If there was a fire, an inward opening door could be broken down much quicker than an outward swinging one. In addition,  inward-opening doors tend to be more secure, as their hinges are concealed on the door’s interior. This is all very important to the security and safety of your home’s front door to have the hinges on the inside of the door.

Guests

It is much easier to answer a front door for guests if the front door swings inward. This sounds like a small detail when it comes to your front door installation. If your guests knock and you go to answer the door, you may knock them out if the door were swinging outward. It’s just much easier to welcome guests with an inward swinging door.

Inward Swinging Doors Work With Storm Doors

The front door is designed to swing inward to work with your storm door. The storm door is the glass door that sits in front of your entry door. This protects your home better from the elements and air infiltration. It’s key that your entry door swings inward to allow you to be able to look out your storm door when needed. The storm door swings out, so if both doors swung out it would be really hard to get the views from the storm door and functionality you need.
