Your siding takes on a lot throughout the year. Wind can carry dust and debris against your exterior, spring brings pollen, summer storms can leave dirt behind, and winter weather adds another round of exposure. Eventually, even low-maintenance siding can start looking dull or dirty.

Knowing how to clean vinyl siding and how to clean fiber cement siding can help you remove everyday buildup without accidentally damaging the material.

The short answer: To clean vinyl siding, use a garden hose, soft cloth or soft-bristle brush, and a mild cleaning solution, working carefully across the exterior and rinsing thoroughly. To clean fiber cement siding, use low-pressure water with a soft cloth or nonmetal brush, following the siding manufacturer's cleaning instructions.

The right method depends on the siding material, the type of buildup you're dealing with, and the manufacturer's care recommendations. This guide walks you through the process from start to finish.

Why Does Siding Need to Be Cleaned?

how to clean vinyl siding denver

Exterior home siding is designed to stand up to outdoor exposure, but that does not mean it stays spotless.

Over time, you may notice:

A relatively dry climate can create its own cleaning challenges. Dust may settle onto siding during extended dry periods, while wind can push debris against the house. Rain can then turn that surface dust into streaks or patches of grime.

Areas protected by roof overhangs may actually become particularly dirty because regular rainfall does not reach them as easily.

Periodic cleaning helps restore the appearance of the exterior while giving you an opportunity to inspect your siding more closely.

How Often Should You Clean House Siding?

There is no universal cleaning schedule that works for every house.

For many homeowners, checking the siding once or twice a year is enough to determine if cleaning is necessary. You may need to clean more frequently if your home is exposed to considerable dust, nearby construction, trees, irrigation, heavy pollen, or other sources of buildup.

Instead of cleaning according to a strict calendar, inspect the exterior periodically.

Look closely around:

Cleaning methods also vary by material. Vinyl and fiber cement should not automatically be treated the same way.

How to Clean Vinyl Siding - Step by Step

Vinyl siding is popular partly because it does not require the same ongoing painting and maintenance associated with many traditional exterior materials. Routine washing can remove the pollen, dust, cobwebs, and grime that collect on the panels over time.

The main concern when cleaning vinyl is the way the panels overlap. You want to clean the exposed surface without scratching it or spraying water upward behind the siding.

To clean vinyl siding step by step, check for damaged panels first, rinse loose debris from the top down, spot-clean areas with heavier grime, and finish with a gentle rinse that follows the direction the siding sheds water.

1. Check the Panels and Openings

Walk around your home and look closely at the siding before getting it wet. Check for cracked pieces, loose panels, gaps around trim, and sections that have pulled away from the wall.

Also close your windows and doors and move furniture away from the house. Cover sensitive electrical fixtures or other areas that should stay dry.

2. Hose Off Surface Debris

Start at the upper portion of the wall and use a garden hose to carry pollen, dust, cobwebs, and loose dirt downward.

Keep the stream pointed straight at the siding or slightly downward. Avoid spraying underneath the overlapping edges, where water may get behind the panels.

3. Spot-Clean the Areas That Need More Work

You may not need cleaning solution across the entire exterior. If most of the siding responds to water, focus your cleaner on sections with grime that remains.

Use a vinyl-safe product according to its directions. Work on an area small enough that you can finish it before the cleaner dries.

4. Loosen Stubborn Grime Without Scratching the Vinyl

Use a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush where dirt is still holding on. Corners, shaded walls, areas beneath eaves, and protected sections may need more attention because rainfall does not regularly wash them.

Skip wire brushes, steel wool, stiff scrubbers, and abrasive products that can leave the finish looking dull or scratched.

5. Give the Wall a Final Top-to-Bottom Rinse

Use clean water to carry away the loosened grime and remaining cleaner. Keep following the natural downward direction of the panels as you work.

Once the wall begins to dry, step back and look for missed areas. If a section still appears dirty, another gentle spot cleaning is a better next step than immediately using a more aggressive tool.

The Vinyl Siding Institute's cleaning recommendations suggest using an ordinary garden hose and a soft-bristle washing brush for routine cleaning while avoiding stiff brushes and abrasive cleaners.

Can You Pressure Wash Vinyl Siding?

This is where homeowners should be careful.

A pressure washer can produce considerably more force than a standard garden hose. Too much pressure can damage siding or drive water behind panels and into areas that are supposed to remain protected.

The Vinyl Siding Institute's siding cleaning guidance recommends following the siding manufacturer's instructions when using a pressure washer because some manufacturers advise against pressure washing.

If you're unsure about the siding manufacturer's recommendations, a garden hose and soft brush provide a gentler starting point.

More force does not necessarily mean a cleaner exterior.

How to Clean Fiber Cement Siding - Step by Step

Fiber cement siding calls for a different mindset. Instead of focusing on overlapping vinyl panels, you need to protect the siding's finished surface and limit the amount of force and moisture used during cleaning.

Manufacturer care instructions should guide the process. Avoid acid washing and aggressive pressure washing, and do not leave cleaning products sitting on the surface longer than directed.

To clean fiber cement siding step by step, identify the type of buildup, choose a cleaning method that is safe for the finish, gently work on small areas, and remove the cleaner with low-pressure water before it dries.

1. Look at the Boards, Finish, and Joints

Check the wall for cracked boards, peeling or damaged finish, open joints, and trouble around windows, doors, and trim.

If you find physical damage, deal with that concern before washing the area. Cleaning can improve a dirty surface, but it cannot correct a board or finish that has deteriorated.

2. Identify What You Are Trying to Remove

Do not automatically cover the entire wall with cleaner. First determine if you are dealing with loose dust, ordinary dirt, or a more stubborn stain.

Light surface debris may come away with low-pressure water alone. Other buildup may require a cleaning product approved for the siding.

3. Treat a Small Area at a Time

If a cleaner is needed, follow its directions and test an inconspicuous area when appropriate.

Keep your work area manageable. This gives you time to gently clean the surface and remove the product before it dries onto the finish.

4. Use Tools That Protect the Finish

Work stubborn areas with a soft cloth or a soft-to-medium nonmetal brush. Apply enough effort to loosen the grime without aggressively scrubbing the coating.

Avoid metal brushes, abrasive pads, and harsh tools that could mark the surface.

5. Remove Cleaner With Low-Pressure Water

Once a section is clean, use a garden hose or another low-pressure water source to remove the remaining product and loosened debris.

Pay attention around joints, trim, windows, and doors. You want to remove the cleaner without forcing large amounts of water into openings in the exterior.

6. Let the Surface Dry Before Judging the Results

Give the siding time to dry before deciding if it needs another treatment. Wet fiber cement can look different from the finished, dry surface.

If discoloration, fading, damaged coating, cracks, or other marks remain after the siding is clean, you may be looking at a material or finish problem rather than removable dirt.

Manufacturer recommendations matter when cleaning fiber cement. According to James Hardie's siding care guidance, homeowners should use low-pressure water from a garden hose and a soft or medium-bristle siding brush to remove dirt and debris rather than pressure washing the surface.

Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement Siding Cleaning: What's the Difference?

The basic process looks similar: inspect, rinse, gently clean, and rinse again.

The important difference is that you're working with two different materials and should follow the care instructions for the siding installed on your home.

Cleaning Consideration Vinyl Siding Fiber Cement Siding
Routine rinsing Garden hose Low-pressure water
Cleaning tool Soft cloth or soft-bristle brush Soft cloth or nonmetal brush
Abrasive tools Avoid Avoid
High pressure Use caution and follow manufacturer instructions Avoid excessive pressure
Cleaner Vinyl-safe mild cleaner Manufacturer-approved mild cleaner
Main concern Scratching or forcing water behind panels Damaging the finish or introducing excess moisture

If you don't know what siding you have, identifying the material should come before choosing a cleaning method.

What Should You Avoid When Cleaning Siding?

Knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing how to clean the siding.

A few common mistakes can turn routine maintenance into an exterior repair.

Using Too Much Water Pressure

Higher pressure does not automatically provide better results. Excessive force may damage finishes, affect siding panels, or push water into joints and openings.

Spraying Upward

With horizontal siding, avoid directing water upward beneath overlapping courses. Keep water moving in the direction the siding is designed to shed it.

Using Abrasive Brushes

Metal brushes, steel wool, and aggressive scrubbers can scratch or alter siding finishes.

Letting Cleaner Dry on the Wall

Work in smaller sections, particularly on sunny days. Rinse cleaning products away before they have an opportunity to dry onto the siding.

Ignoring Manufacturer Instructions

Cleaning recommendations can vary between siding brands and products.

If you know the manufacturer of your siding, check its care instructions before using chemicals, specialized equipment, or a pressure washer.

When Dirty Siding Is Actually Damaged Siding

Not every exterior problem can be washed away. Cleaning can remove dirt and buildup, but it cannot fix siding that has started to fail.

Take another look at your exterior after it is clean. If the siding still looks warped, cracked, loose, faded, or stained, the problem may be with the material itself rather than something sitting on the surface. At that point, another round of cleaning is unlikely to change what you see.

Watch for:

Where the problem appears can also tell you something. Staining below a gutter, for example, may point to a drainage issue. Damage spread across several sections of the exterior may be a sign that the siding itself is reaching the end of its useful life.

Small areas of damage may be candidates for repair when the surrounding siding is still in good condition. When cracking, warping, fading, loose panels, or other problems are widespread, replacement may give you a better long-term solution than continuing to clean or patch an aging exterior.

If cleaning has revealed that your siding needs more than surface care, Conservation Construction can help you take the next step. Explore our siding replacement options to compare materials and learn what a new siding system could offer your home.

Weather Makes Regular Exterior Checks Worthwhilesiding contractor denver

Homes experience a wide range of weather conditions throughout the year.

Strong sunshine, dry periods, wind, rain, hail, snow, and rapid temperature changes all affect your exterior differently. Wind can carry dust against the house, while storms may leave debris and splashes of dirt on lower sections of siding.

Colorado's intense sunlight can also make changes in an exterior finish easier to notice.

Cleaning provides a good opportunity to look beyond surface appearance. As you move around the house, check trim, windows, doors, seams, gutters, and siding for anything that appears different from the previous season.

A clean exterior makes physical changes easier to spot.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cleaning House Siding

What is the best thing to clean vinyl siding with?

For routine cleaning, start with a garden hose and a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush. If water does not remove the buildup, use a mild cleaner approved for vinyl siding and follow the manufacturer's directions.

Avoid immediately reaching for abrasive brushes or high-pressure equipment.

How often should you clean vinyl siding?

There is no single schedule for every home. Inspect your siding periodically and clean it when dirt, pollen, cobwebs, or other buildup becomes noticeable.

Homes exposed to wind, dust, nearby trees, construction, or irrigation may need attention more frequently than protected homes.

How do you clean fiber cement siding without damaging it?

If you're learning how to clean fiber cement siding, start with low-pressure water and a soft cloth or nonmetal brush. Use mild cleaning products that are appropriate for your particular siding and follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

Avoid excessive water pressure and abrasive tools.

Can you use a pressure washer on house siding?

It depends on the siding material and manufacturer. Pressure that is too high can damage an exterior or push water into areas it should not reach.

Check the manufacturer's instructions before pressure washing. When in doubt, a garden hose provides a gentler option for routine cleaning.

What if stains won't come off my siding?

First, determine what is causing the stain. Dirt, organic growth, rust, paint, fading, and material damage require different solutions.

Do not continue scrubbing more aggressively when a stain will not disappear. If the area is actually faded, damaged, or deteriorated, cleaning may not solve the problem.

Keep Your Denver Home's Exterior Looking Its Best

Routine cleaning can keep siding looking its best when the material is still in good condition. But if your siding remains cracked, warped, loose, faded, stained, or worn after the surface is clean, the problem may go beyond dirt.

That is when it makes sense to look at the condition of the siding itself. Small areas of damage may be repairable, while widespread wear or aging material may make replacement a better long-term choice.

If cleaning has revealed that your exterior needs more attention, Conservation Construction can help. We work with Denver homeowners to compare siding options that fit their homes, maintenance goals, and Colorado's changing weather.

Why New Siding Resists Fading

Tired of siding that looks washed out after just a few summers? Modern siding technology has come a long way in combating the sun's relentless UV rays, offering homeowners a much more vibrant and long-lasting finish. Here's why new siding holds its color better:

Advanced Pigments

Unlike older siding that relied on less stable pigments, today's options utilize high-quality, UV-resistant pigments. These pigments are specifically engineered to withstand the sun's harsh radiation without breaking down as easily, leading to significantly less fading over time. This also means less painting for you over time.

Protective Coatings

Many modern siding materials, particularly vinyl and fiber cement, feature durable, factory-applied coatings. These coatings act as a shield, deflecting UV rays and preventing them from directly impacting the color layer. This extra layer of defense greatly enhances color retention.  We offer both of these siding replacement options at Conservation Construction.

Improved Manufacturing Processes

Our modern manufacturing techniques ensure a more consistent and thorough distribution of pigments throughout the siding material. This evenness helps prevent localized fading and contributes to a more uniform and long-lasting color. There are so many colors and options now that you can mix and match and create a truly unique look for your home.

Material Advancements

Materials like fiber cement are inherently more resistant to fading than some older alternatives. Even vinyl siding formulations have been improved to include UV inhibitors directly within the material composition, offering another layer of protection against sun damage.  We also offer Cedar Ridge Siding which is excellent at fade resistance.

Final Thoughts

In short, advancements in pigments, protective coatings, manufacturing processes, and the materials themselves mean that investing in new siding offers more than just an aesthetic upgrade. It provides a long-lasting, vibrant look for your home, resisting the fading that plagued older siding options. Early Materials

Historically, homes were often constructed using materials readily available in the local environment. This could include wood, stone, or clay. In some regions, homes were made using thatch, which is a layer of dried vegetation such as straw or reeds.

Wood Siding

Wood has been a popular siding material for centuries due to its availability and ease of use. Early American homes often featured wooden clapboard siding, which consists of long, overlapping boards. Other styles of wood siding include shingles, shakes, and board-and-batten.

Masonry Siding

In regions where stone or brick was abundant, masonry siding became common. Stone siding, often in the form of cut or rough-hewn blocks, provided durability and a distinctive aesthetic. Brick siding, made from fired clay bricks, became popular during the colonial period and remains a common choice for traditional and historic homes.

Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution brought significant changes to home construction. Mass production techniques made new materials more accessible and affordable. One of the earliest manufactured siding materials was asbestos-cement, introduced in the late 19th century. For obvious reasons they had to start making a different siding after they found out that asbestos was toxic.

Aluminum and Vinyl

In the mid-20th century, aluminum and vinyl siding gained popularity in the United States. These materials offered low maintenance and improved durability compared to wood. Vinyl siding, in particular, became widely used due to its affordability and resistance to rot, insects, and weathering.

Fiber Cement

Introduced in the 1980s, fiber cement siding became a popular alternative to traditional materials like wood and vinyl. Made from a mixture of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, fiber cement siding offers excellent durability, resistance to fire and pests, and low maintenance requirements. We still sell this siding today and it is extremely durable and pest resistant.

Modern Innovations

Recent decades have seen further innovations in home siding materials and technologies. Engineered wood siding like cedar ridge siding, for example, combines modern mix and match colors while giving you a complete moisture management system. Additionally, advances in manufacturing techniques have led to improved finishes and textures that mimic the look of natural materials like real wood. If you’re looking for the real wood look, but looking to get something stronger and more durable, Cedar Ridge Siding is a great choice.

The Look & Feel of Real Wood

Manufacturers use machines which create authentic texture on the planks that mimic the textures in real wood. If you run your fingers across the planks they even feel like real wood. That means from near or far your house will have the authentic look of real wood, but it’ll protect your home better in the long run. Different manufacturers have different textures they use, but the good news is that you can look at all the options before you buy so you can pick out the texture you like the best.

Protection

Siding provides a level of waterproofing to your home and prevents water damage. Moisture is one of the biggest culprits in the deterioration of the interior of your home. New siding panels themselves protect against rain and hail. In addition, we use a specialty tyvek home house wrap. This house wrap lets the siding breathe

Equity

Making home improvements is often a smart investment, but some renovations are more valuable than others. One study showed installing new siding on your home can increase the home value enough to offset 68.9% of the cost, while a most recent study showed an 82% offset. This means you’ll make the majority of your money back when it comes time to sell.

Beauty & Mood Improvement

Don’t Go Cheap On Your Siding Replacement

Siding is oftentimes overlooked because of the cost behind it and the additional time it takes to install. The good news is that there are several options for siding out there where you won’t have to skimp. Even the most basic Vinyl siding today has durability, strength, and energy saving properties. Whether you choose a high end siding or a siding on the lower end you’ll be getting a product that never has to be painted again. That’s good news for your pocketbook down the line because you won’t be paying to have your home painted every 6-7 years.

Replacing Old Siding

Let’s talk about why it’s also not a good idea to skimp on getting new siding altogether. New siding is an important fixture of your house. It is your home’s first line of defense against the outside elements. Damaged or warped siding is a great way to tell if water damage is already headed below the surface of old siding panels. If water damage is occurring it can leak into the wood of the foundation itself and cause bigger damages that no homeowner ever wants to have to deal with or pay for.

Appealing

Siding is the first thing about your home that guests notice. Siding can make a big bold statement or be more of a traditional look. What’s great about new Siding technologies is that most companies, including Conservation Construction, have color match technology. So you can design your house to fit the color you want perfectly. Different parts of your house could be a different color to accent the entire look of the home. You’ll really get a wow look that all the neighbors won’t be able to stop staring at.

Benefits of New Siding

Other properties you’ll get with new siding as opposed to just repairing your home is better water resistance, more energy efficiency, and a brand new looking home. Sometimes when I drive by houses I notice that how beautiful the inside is not always reflected by the outside aesthetics of the home. But I think both should match, don’t you? Your guests will notice a big change in the way they feel coming into your home with new siding and so will you.

We here Conservation Construction sell Fiber Cement, Cedar Ridge, and Vinyl Siding. All of our sidings give our clients versatility.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, If you’re going to save money or go cheap on something, why not make it something that is not as important as the livelihood of the outside of your home. If you need a cheap toothbrush, I would suggest the dollar store, but when we are talking about quality siding materials that last a long time you might want to do some smart shopping and go with the one that will last. After all you will have to be the one to look at it for the next 20-30 years. That kind of time deserves your consideration, don’t you think? Get your free quote today!

How Does Vinyl Siding Look So Much Like Real Wood?

Vinyl siding that mimics the appearance of real wood is created through a manufacturing process that involves careful design, texturing, and coloring. Here's a general overview of how vinyl siding is made to look like real wood.

Design and Molding

The process begins with the design of the vinyl siding panels. Our manufacturers create molds that replicate the texture and pattern of real wood. These molds are often made from actual wood samples to ensure accurate replication.

Texturing

The molds are used to create textured surfaces on the vinyl panels. This texture includes grain patterns, knots, and other features that are characteristic of real wood. The goal is to mimic the tactile and visual qualities of wood as closely as possible. That way when you see the house from any distance it does look like real wood. The neat thing is that it feels like real wood, too.

Coloring

Vinyl siding comes in a wide range of colors, including those that imitate various wood tones. We have so many colors to choose from at Conservation Construction. These colorants are carefully chosen to resemble the natural hues of nature. You can mix and match colors to create the perfect style for your home.

UV Protection

Vinyl siding is exposed to the elements, including sunlight. To prevent fading and damage from UV rays, the paint we use includes UV-resistant additives in the vinyl material. This helps maintain the color and appearance of the siding over time.

Installation

Vinyl siding that mimics real wood often comes in panels with interlocking systems that create the illusion of individual wood planks. These panels are installed in a way that enhances the wood-like aesthetic, with attention to alignment and spacing.

Accessories

To complete the look, we also provide accessories like corner posts, trim pieces, and soffits that match the style of the wood-like vinyl siding. These accessories help create a cohesive and convincing appearance.

To explore more exterior upgrades that offer the beauty of natural materials without the upkeep, read our blogs, Front Doors That Look Like Wood But Aren’t and Vinyl Siding Replacement, and see how you can transform your home’s appearance with long-lasting alternatives.

Final Thoughts

It's important to note that while vinyl siding can closely resemble the look of real wood, it doesn't capture the exact characteristics and feel of natural wood. However, vinyl siding offers the advantage of being more durable, low-maintenance, and resistant to issues like rot, insects, and warping that are commonly associated with real wood siding. New Siding Can Help Prevent Sun Damage

New Siding can absolutely help prevent sun damage to your home. That is great news for homeowners who live in Colorado as we have such a high UV index. Read the article to learn how new Siding can prevent sun damage.

UV Protection

Cedar Ridge, Vinyl, and James Hardie are designed to resist ultraviolet radiation from the sun. UV rays can cause fading, discoloration, and degradation of older siding materials. Newer siding options, such as vinyl, fiber cement, and cedar ridge, often come with UV-resistant coatings that help maintain their color and structural integrity over time.

Reflective Surfaces

These siding materials which we sell at Conservation Construction are manufactured with reflective surfaces that bounce back a portion of the sun's energy. This can help reduce heat absorption and prevent the siding from becoming excessively hot. Cooler siding temperatures can also contribute to a more comfortable interior climate and potentially lower cooling costs.

Insulation and Thermal Regulation

Some types of siding, like insulated vinyl siding or composite materials like cedar ridge, provide an additional layer of insulation for your home. This can help regulate indoor temperatures by minimizing heat transfer through the walls, which in turn reduces the impact of direct sun exposure on the interior.

Color Fade Resistance

Vinyl, Cedar Ridge and Fiber Cement are all engineered to resist color fading caused by prolonged sun exposure. These materials are formulated to retain their original color for extended periods even when exposed to extreme weather. They maintain their aesthetic appeal of your home's exterior. They are so good at resisting fading that you never have to paint again. How cool is that?

Durability and Longevity

These siding materials are often more durable and weather-resistant than older options. They can withstand the effects of sun exposure, extreme weather including heat, hail, UV radiation, and temperature fluctuations, without showing signs of significant damage.

Maintenance and Protection

The new siding we offer at Conservation Construction means less maintenance than older, worn-out siding. Properly maintained siding provides a protective barrier against the elements, including the sun, which helps prevent moisture intrusion, warping, and other forms of damage.

Preventing Cracking and Warping

Extreme heat from the sun like we get in Colorado can cause older siding materials to crack, warp, or deteriorate. New siding materials are designed to be more resilient and less prone to these types of damage, helping your home maintain its structural integrity.

Improved Ventilation

All of the siding options we sell incorporate advanced ventilation systems that allow air to circulate between the siding and the wall. This airflow helps prevent the buildup of heat and moisture, both of which can contribute to sun damage over time. We use a specialty house wrap that prevents stagnant water and allows the house to breathe for more stable temperatures all year long.

The vinyl siding of 2023 is not the vinyl siding of the 1960s. Vinyl siding made its way onto the home siding marketplace in the 1960s, and as with any invention, vast technological improvements have been made by vinyl siding manufacturers since this siding first appeared over a half century ago.

Wear And Tear

Older vinyl siding commonly used through the 1980s through early 2000s has a shelf life of approximately 20-25 years. Since the color was only in the thin layer of the extrusion, scratches would expose the underlying substrate of the vinyl siding, which was a different color and causing unsightly chips and cracks. Modern vinyl siding today uses better bonding technologies to ensure chipping, cracking, warping, and other forms of weather wear are a thing of the past. In fact, new vinyl siding is so great at resisting weather and sun fade it never needs to get painted again! How cool is that?

Old Technology

Vinyl siding used to melt when exposed to high temperatures, and people would regularly run into this in the past. Of course this was a huge problem and had to be corrected. New Vinyl Siding has been engineered over the past decades to ensure this problem stays in the past. New vinyl siding keeps its integrity and holds up to heat, wind, and other extreme temperatures much more easily than vinyl siding of the past would have.

How Long Does New Vinyl Siding Last

Today's vinyl siding is far more durable than the vinyl siding that was invented in the 1960s to replace aluminum. Typically, vinyl siding lasts between 20 and 40 years. It lasts this long with very little maintenance required over time. When properly maintained, your vinyl siding will last decades. While other materials require painting and caulking, vinyl needs a simple bucket of warm water and some mild soap to be cleaned about once a year.

Real Wood Look

You may be thinking, vinyl siding can't possibly imitate the beauty of real wood siding. Well, it can and it does. If you have a more traditional or classic style home, you probably want to keep that style instead of throwing on some modern looking siding and vinyl does just that. You can get panels that look just like real wood or you can choose from panels with a more modern twist. Whatever style you want, we have you and your house covered.

Final Thoughts

As you can see vinyl siding has come a long way from the early 1960s to today. It is more durable, vibrant, and protective than ever before. If you are in need of new vinyl siding replacement please contact us today to get your free quote. Thank you so much for reading today’s article and we will see you next week for another one.

When it comes to home improvement, investing in new windows, siding, and doors can significantly enhance the aesthetics, energy efficiency, and overall functionality of your living space. These crucial components of your home play a vital role in protecting you from the elements, ensuring security, and creating a welcoming atmosphere. In this article, we explore the numerous benefits that arise from upgrading your windows, siding, and doors, demonstrating how these improvements can transform your home into a more comfortable, stylish, and energy-efficient haven.

Enhanced Energy Efficiency

One of the most significant advantages of installing new windows, siding, and doors is the substantial improvement in energy efficiency. Outdated or poorly insulated components can contribute to significant energy loss, leading to higher utility bills and a less comfortable living environment. Modern windows, siding, and doors are designed with advanced materials and technologies that provide better insulation, effectively reducing drafts and preventing heat transfer. This enhanced energy efficiency not only reduces your carbon footprint but also helps you save money on heating and cooling costs year-round.

Improved Comfort and Insulation

Old and deteriorating windows, siding, and doors can allow outside noise, drafts, and temperature fluctuations to permeate your home. Upgrading to new, high-quality materials will greatly improve your comfort levels by minimizing unwanted noise, maintaining consistent indoor temperatures, and preventing air leaks. Additionally, advanced window designs with multiple panes, Low-E coatings, and gas-filled chambers provide superior insulation, creating a more comfortable living environment throughout the year.

Increased Natural Light and Aesthetic Appeal

New windows, siding, and doors can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home. By choosing modern window designs that maximize natural light, you can create a bright and inviting space. Additionally, stylish and well-maintained siding and doors can transform the exterior of your home, boosting its curb appeal and leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

Enhanced Security and Safety

Windows, siding, and doors are key elements in protecting your home from intruders and external threats. Outdated or damaged components can compromise the security of your property. By installing new windows with sturdy frames, and advanced locking mechanisms, you can significantly deter potential break-ins and ensure the safety of your family and belongings. Upgrading to durable and robust doors, along with reinforced siding, can provide an additional layer of security against the outside elements.

Reduced Maintenance and Longevity

Older windows, siding, and doors often require frequent maintenance and repairs to keep them functional and aesthetically pleasing. By investing in new, high-quality materials, you can minimize the need for ongoing maintenance and enjoy long-lasting durability. Modern window frames, sidings, and doors are often constructed from low-maintenance materials like vinyl, fiberglass, or cedar ridge, which resist rotting, warping, and fading. This means less time and money spent on repairs and refinishing, allowing you to focus on other aspects of homeownership.

You and your neighbors see it every day, but when it comes to home improvement priorities. Siding doesn’t always make it to the top of the list. Although Siding gets dropped to the bottom of most home improvement lists, it is the most important part of your home for curb appeal and property value. Many people aren’t sure about the age of their siding. Some people simply forget, while others bought a pre-existing home and have no idea when the owners installed it. What’s more important, however, is understanding how to spot signs that suggest you need siding repair or replacement. Keep reading to learn more.

Fading or Peeling

Faded and missing patches of paint are a big sign of a siding problem. Peeling paint will also leave your siding exposed, allowing for moisture to get underneath or inside the panels. Most siding is prone to fading from the elements over years of exposure. The leading cause of faded siding is oxidation. The cool thing about new siding is that if you get a modern Vinyl, Cedar Ridge, or James Hardie Siding from Conservation Construction, they don’t fade and you won’t ever have to paint them again.

Is It Cracking?

You can tell a siding is cracked from far and near. Cracked siding literally looks cracked. If your siding looks cracked it’s probably letting in water and opening your home to other vulnerabilities as well like pests.  Cracked siding is not an easy repair. Simply painting over the cracks won’t fix cracked siding either. Siding replacement is needed in situations like this.

Rotting and Warping

If your siding has begun to warp, rot, or become soft, it is time to replace it. To test for rot, insert a screwdriver gently under the boards and joints along gutters and chimneys to see if the material underlying the area is soft and easy to poke into. This indicates significant, irreparable rotting damage. If it’s gotten this bad it could even mean that water is getting into the foundation itself. It is critical to replace your siding at this point, because if this type of damage has occurred it could cause more costly problems down the line.

New Siding

New Siding has been engineered over the past decades. Advancements in technology have made new siding replacement even more revolutionary and durable than siding of the past. As stated above, new siding has been engineered to never have to be painted again. It is extremely resistant to harsh weather and pests. Whether you choose Cedar Ridge Siding, James Hardie, or Vinyl Siding each is durable and reliable in different ways. You can ask a sales associate today for your free quote and get the specs of all these wonderful sidings yourself!

Final Thoughts

If your siding is warped, cracked, or rotting, it’s time to consider siding replacement. If your siding has gone past the 20 year mark it’s time to get a siding replacement. How Old Is Your Current Siding

How old is your current siding? Is it 20+ years old? If it’s this old it is beyond time to replace the siding on your home. Old siding does not have the energy efficiency or protection your home needs.

Modern Vinyl Siding

Old Vinyl Siding of the past would sometimes melt off the side of the house, literally. This just won’t happen with new Vinyl Siding. Modern technologies have revolutionized siding technology. Vinyl Siding is stronger, vibrant, and more easy to maintain than vinyl siding of the past. It is resistant to winds of up to 145mph. It is also extremely rot and pest resistant.

Other Modern Vinyl Siding Properties

New vinyl siding is the most cost-effective siding. It is also the easiest siding to install as it can be installed right over the top of your existing siding. In addition, it still protects your home from water damage. So come rain or shine you’ll have a siding that truly protects your home. Vinyl siding is designed to keep your home warm and dry, and offers a low maintenance, long-term solution for any climate. Combined with quality insulation and expertly installed, vinyl siding can improve energy efficiency and help to create a more comfortable, attractive home.

Just Painting

Just painting the siding alone will help keep your home looking new, but it won’t protect well against the elements. Old siding can become easily waterlogged--especially old wood siding. Not to mention the fact that paint only lasts so long. You’ll have to repaint again in a few years. That’s why new Vinyl Siding is so extraordinary. Vinyl Siding has new properties which adhere the paint better to the panels and it keeps its vibrancy longer. It is extremely durable against fading under harsh UV rays.  If you go with new vinyl siding you’ll never have to paint again.

Lifetime Warranties

Possibly one of the best features you get with all each and every product we sell (Vinyl Siding included) is lifetime limited warranties. If you get siding replacement installed by Conservation Construction you’ll get top-notch warranties for life. If anything ever goes wrong with the siding we’ll have you covered. No other company on the market today has this type of warranty.

Why Does Siding Fade

Old sidings of the past would fade due to exposure to the elements like rain and the constant beat down of the UV rays day after day. The sun's rays are a powerful deteriorate when it comes to old paint technology. If your siding has gone past the 10-15 year mark it may be time for you to consider getting new siding. Rather than a new coat of paint, new siding which has extreme durability properties will last decades.

Vibrancy

The type of new siding we sell at Conservation Construction is engineered for longevity. In fact, most new siding is designed with durability in mind. With this being said our line of sidings which include; Vinyl, James Hardie and Cedar Ridge all include specialized technologies that give them UV protection. This means your siding will be vibrant for life with little to no maintenance. Furthermore, our sidings are so resistant to fading that you never have to go through the hassle of painting again. That’s right, you won’t have that further expense down the line so you can save your time and money for what truly matters!

Mix and Match Colors

In the past, you’d typically have to stick to one color on the house and one color for the trim. Going outside this very structured plan back in the day meant spending a ton of money on extra colors and textures. This is just not the case in today’s market. Today you can easily choose multiple colors, mix and match them, and then work with an expert to create a totally unique look for your home. You can see what we mean by checking out the neat photo below.

By mixing and matching colors you can truly get the most unique and exciting look for your home. Choose greens and reds like this unique house or cool tones like blues and grays!

Warranties

Another reason this siding stays so vibrant for so long is that it is covered by the best warranty in the business. At Conservation Construction we provide lifetime limited warranties which cover every part of the siding. If anything ever goes wrong it will be covered under the warranty. How cool is that?

Old Siding Is Removed/ Inspected For Installation

The first step in the process is that your old siding will be removed. This may take some time depending on just how big your house is. Our experts though are very efficient. Some Siding Replacement doesn’t require the removal of old siding. That’s because modern Vinyl Siding can be installed over existing siding saving you time and money on labor. This doesn’t make the siding any less durable or energy efficient.

House Wrap

Possibly the most important part of Siding Replacement comes before the siding is even placed. House wrap is cut and installed over the entire home. This is important for several reasons. House Wrap protects the wall's sheathing and also helps prevent uncontrolled air circulation, which will improve your home's insulative abilities. Additionally, house wrap breathes to prevent water sitting behind the panels of siding, causing damage.

Install New Siding

After the house wrap is placed, our crews then start to install the siding. This part is really exsiding for you! The actual Siding Replacement is installed from bottom to top so that the panels lay correctly. This process can take anywhere from a week to two weeks to longer, depending on how big your project and home are. Once installed, the siding gives you the look and feel of a new home. You’ll get all the vibrancy, protection, and insulation of a new siding for decades to come.

Clean Up

Clean up happens at the end and throughout the process. Our installers make a point to clean up as they go so from day to day your house won’t look like a disaster while the installation is happening. Overall though we try to leave your home looking cleaner than it did when we arrived. So once we leave you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the look of your new siding!

Are you interested in why you might need new siding replacement? In today’s article we’ll cover the components that make up siding replacement. If you learn the different parts of siding, you too can be an expert at siding replacement. Click below to learn more.

What are the pieces of siding called?

The actual siding panels are called profiles. These are the individual strips they put up during your siding installation. They can be cut down into smaller pieces to fit in tight spaces. Each siding has different types of panels that fit different needs. At Conservation Construction we have Cedar Ridge Siding, Vinyl, and James Hardie Fiber Cement. So all are good siding choices and all offer different protection in different ways. Finally, they come with different patterns as well to look like real wood or more modern textures!

Soffit & Fascia

An exterior soffit is located on the span beneath the rafter tails, while the fascia is the exposed horizontal band you see at the end of the rafters. These architectural elements found along the house help protect the exterior of your house by keeping out pests like bats, birds, and squirrels, and give you a way to disguise ventilation for your attic.

House Wrap

House wraps, also referred to as housewraps, prevent moisture, mold, and drafts from entering your home and can act as a strong barrier against moisture or wind. At Conservation Construction we use a house wrap called Tyvek. This house wrap is the superior choice for siding replacement projects. Additionally, it sits behind the siding panels and allows air to vent the house to prevent water damage.

Paint & Stains

For the most part, stain is the same as paint. It is composed of pigments and a vehicle, ingredients that perform the same functions as they do in paint. Additionally, the sidings we sell at Conservation Construction come pre-stained or pre-painted with long lasting properties that never have to be painted again. If you are looking for a truly maintenance free siding you can’t do better than a siding from Conservation Construction.

End Caps

An End Cap is a piece of trim used to deflect water away from the top of vertical siding. Finally, the End Cap siding pieces ensure that water drips away from panels and does not infiltrate them.

Hello and welcome to another article. Today we’re going to be covering some facts you may not know about vinyl siding replacement. Vinyl siding is much more durable than it used to be. It’s taken decades of engineering but new vinyl siding has some great new properties! Keep reading to learn more.

  1. Vinyl siding is engineered with polyvinyl chloride — the third most popular synthetic plastic polymer in the world! It was first introduced in the 1950s as an alternative to aluminum siding. But its reputation was tarnished in the early days when it cracked, faded, buckled, and sagged. Nowadays new vinyl siding doesn’t have these problems as it was engineered to last a lifetime.
  2. More than 30% of homes in the U.S. have vinyl siding on them! That makes vinyl the most-used residential siding material in the nation.
  3. Vinyl siding repairs are easier than almost any other siding repairs. Where in other cases, siding repair may require extensive work, vinyl repairs can be as simple as replacing a panel or two.
  4. It requires less maintenance than almost any other type of siding. Unlike wood, it never requires sanding, staining or repainting.
  5. Compared to other sidings, vinyl is one of the easiest to install. It cuts easily, can be put up quickly, and requires no painting. Though the installation process is simple, prepping for the job requires more effort. Our experts know exactly how to get the job done the right way the first time.
  6. The benchmark set for vinyl siding under current code standards requires siding to withstand wind pressures equivalent to 110 mph on a building up to 30′ in height, yet most vinyl siding can pass tests for much higher stresses, many times suitable for hurricane-prone areas.
  7. It is durable, cost effective, insect and rot resistant. New, modern types of vinyl siding are actually insect-proof
  8. It comes in a wide variety of colors and textures.
  9. Since vinyl helps insulate your home, it keeps you nice and warm in the winter. With poorly insulated walls, your heater or furnace has to run constantly to keep your house warm. Siding helps to trap all this warmth inside the home, cutting back on your energy bills.
  10.  We offer free quotes for vinyl siding so you can get a cost estimate without having to even leave your house. We come to you and bring samples making new siding replacement easy peas.

We’ll give you all kinds of facts in today’s article why siding replacement just might be the best home improvement project for you right now.

New Siding Is Energy Efficient

The good news is that most new sidings today are energy efficient. This helps you out in a big way because you get to save up to 40% off your total energy bill. So whether you choose Vinyl, Cedar Ridge, or Fiber Cement Siding you'll be getting more stable room temperatures all year long. This is because all of these sidings come with insulation.

Durability

Ask yourself, how bad is my current siding? Is it 20+ years old? Sometimes just painting siding won't solve the problem of warped or water laden panels. New siding creates a moisture management system so rot, warp, and mold are a thing of the past. You won’t have to worry about water damaging the inside of your house or foundation again.

No Hassle Paint

On top of better insulation and strength, new sidings can give you the look and feel of a brand new house, but you don't have to move at all. They come in a wide variety of colors that are technologically sound which means they won’t have to be painted again. With mix and match technology you can get two tones for your home to create a totally unique look. Once you pick the colors you're done forever! No hassle siding is just easy peazy. You won’t have to spend money to have your house painted down the line.

Strength

New Siding will give you strength beyond compare. All new sidings on the market today (especially the ones offered by Conservation Construction) are extremely durable. They hold up to the most extreme weather conditions. Too, Fiber Cement Siding is the only siding on the market today that is fire rated. Final Thoughts

We hope we’ve answered some of the most FAQ questions about siding replacement in our article for you today. If you have any additional questions you’d like to have answered, please comment down below. We’d be happy to help you with anything. As always, thanks for reading today’s article and we will see you next time.

Old siding used to be made of wood. The look of old wood is still appealing to some people. Unfortunately, wood is not the best option for siding in this day and age. Old wood would crack, warp, or collect water under the panels. This could cause mold issues. That’s why nowadays most siding is made out of composite materials. This is true with two types of siding we sell James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding and Cedar Ridge Composite Siding. The great thing about new siding is that you don’t have to sacrifice the look of real wood by switching to a new siding. You can get the same great look of real wood with composite materials which mimic the look and feel of real wood.

Advantages

Unlike real wood siding, Cedar Ridge and Fiber Cement Siding have strong moisture barriers. The way they are installed and their makeup ensure that warping and cracking don’t happen. Rotting is a thing of the past with new siding. You’ll get years of gorgeous color without the hassle of mold getting stuck on the surface either. This means you’ll have to clean and worry less about the rain and moisture that’s around you all the time.

Moisture Barrier Layer

In addition to the siding being moisture resistant, we use a special house wrap. This sheet is placed around the house like wrapping paper for a continuous layer of insulation under your new siding. Essentially, this is wrapping your home in a blanket of energy savings. Overall, house wrap helps keep heat and humidity out in the summer and warm air in during the winter—helping keep your heating and cooling costs down. It also helps vent out stuck moisture.

Look & Feel Of Wood

Engineers have worked tirelessly over the years to give you siding products that look and feel like real wood. So you can get the look of real wood with it being extremely energy efficient and durable. In fact, most new siding like Cedar Ridge and James Hardie never have to be painted again. So, they can save the average homeowner up to 40% off their energy costs. Not to mention, whole home siding replacement can significantly reduce outside noise in the house. You’ll be living in your very own library!

Better Protection

Your house will have better overall protection when you switch to new siding as well. Even new base level vinyl siding can withstand winds of up to 145mph. New Cedar Ridge and Fiber Cement styles increase that to 155 to 165 mph wind resistance. So, they are great at withstanding hail, and are dent resistant. You’ll truly get a siding that looks as good in 10 years as the day it was installed.

Are you looking for new siding for your home? Are you looking for something durable and unique? Well, you’ve stumbled upon the right article. James Hardie Siding might be the siding you have been looking for. Here at Conservation Construction we offer this one of a kind siding. There’s lots of buzz out there about this siding and what it has to offer. Read more to learn about James Hardie Siding.

What Is James Hardie Siding Made Out Of?

First off, what is James Hardie Siding made out of? James Hardie is made up of a mix of cement and cellulose fibers. Cement is combined with sand, water and cellulose wood fibers to create a material particularly suited to protect home exteriors. It’s this unique makeup that allows James Hardie Siding to be extremely impact resistant when installed. It is also this formula that makes this siding extremely heavy too. Two people are needed to install the individual panels. This just means more protection against hail, high winds, rain, and anything else mother nature throws your way.

Prevents Water Damage

It’s also because of its makeup that it is excellent at preventing rot and water damage. This material was engineered to be able to withstand any climate from humid and hot to cold and windy. It protects your home from heat, humidity, and the blistering sun. Homeowners will rejoice to know over time this material won’t crack, split, or warp as the result of climate. This makes it perfect for Colorado homeowners as we have drastic fast temperature changes.

Pest Protection

James Hardie Siding offers you protection from a wide array of pests like termites, woodpeckers, and carpenter ants. Pests and insects don’t like this cement material so they stay far away from it. Talk about knocking out two birds with one stone!

Color Plus Technology

James Hardie comes with Color Plus options. This is a proprietary finish that is applied in the factory itself. This gives the paint an optimized adhesion. It finishes the paint on the siding in a controlled environment to give you a stronger bond on the paint which prevents cracking and chipping. This means this paint resists fading and gives you a vibrant color for a much longer time! You color will remain vibrant for life without ever having to paint it.

Fire Tested and Rated Material

Finally, James Hardie Siding is the only material that is fire tested and rated. It has a one hour fire rated assembly which means it will not ignite when exposed to direct flames, and it prevents fires from spreading for up to 1 hour while maintaining structural integrity. It’s for this reason that it’s one of the most amazing sidings on the market today.

Other Benefits of Replacement Siding

It’s always a good idea to consider getting replacement siding. New Siding in general can give you the look and feel of a new home without the hassle of having to move. When other homes in the neighborhood look drab and worn down yours will look brand new. It increases selling prices when it comes time to move, and it insulates your house better. This insulation makes your home quieter while giving you lower energy bills and more stable room temperatures all year long.

The storm over the past weekend was a doozy. We all know what it’s like to live in Colorado. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s snowing. Heck, it could even be sunny and snowing at the same time. In Colorado you need a different kind of window, door and siding. Because our weather is so bipolar these products need to be able to withstand the harshest conditions. That’s why at Conservation Construction we’ve engineered products that last a lifetime in these conditions. Keep reading to learn more.

Windows

Our windows are unique in that we not only manufacture them in Colorado so they are made in our specific climate, but they were designed by a native Coloradan to ensure that they stand up against the harshest conditions. Our windows don't crack, warp, or leak. That’s because of all the specific things we put into the window including;

Platinum Elite Spacers

Easy Clean Coating

Low-E Glass Coating

Custom Bottom Drains

Custom Locks

Foam Filled Frames

All of these things work together to give you windows that block the harsh UV rays from entering your home, stabilize temperatures inside, keep furniture from bleaching, lower energy costs and so much more. If you are in need of new windows why not go with the kind that was made and manufactured for the Colorado weather? Go with a Window from Conservation Construction.

Doors

Additionally, most people don’t realize that up to 40% of there energy costs could be escaping through their front door alone. Drafts that come in under the door can get your pocketbook into serious trouble, especially in these cold conditions. Even a little bit of a draft constantly blowing into your home can keep your furnace running 24/7. New entry doors can save you so much on your energy costs. Not to mention, they are durable and safe. Their color stay technology means that everyday wear and tear doesn’t affect them. You can even get a touchless lock to ensure you never get locked out of the house again.

Siding

Perhaps the biggest energy suck of your entire home is old siding. Old siding doesn’t just drag down the look of a home, it makes your home more susceptible to things like mold, drafts, and critters. New siding can give you gorgeous vibrant color and lower energy costs for life. This means not only will you never have to paint again, you’ll get a significantly reduced energy bill for the rest of the time you own the home. Here at Conservation Construction we sell Cedar Ridge, James Hardie, Vinyl, and Steel Siding to meet each person's individual needs. Finally, all of our sidings are extremely impact resistant. This means even in a blizzard they will keep you safe from the storm.

Are you thinking about getting new siding? How do you know for sure what the best questions are to ask when looking around for new siding? There is a lot of information out there on individual products, but it’s good to ask general questions too. New siding will be on your house for a lifetime, and it’s good to ask a lot of questions before you buy. Keep reading to learn more about the best questions you should ask when getting siding replacement.

What Is Its Wind Resistance

This is a great question to ask wherever you live because strong breezes can come blowing anywhere. In particular though, if your area is susceptible to strong winds it’s always good to ask how resistant this siding is. Different sidings have different wind resistances and you want to make sure that the siding you choose will fit the environment where you live. If wind is a significant problem in your area a siding like James Hardie is more preferable.

Impact Resistance

As with wind, certain sidings are better at resisting impact than other sidings. If you’re in an area with strong storms which can bring hail, you’ll want to consider asking how impact resistant the siding you're considering getting is. Some sidings like Cedar Ridge Siding are extremely impact resistant and were designed to hold up against hail and debris that fly their way.

Energy Efficiency

If you’re most concerned about energy efficiency, we get it. Old siding can cost you a ton of money in energy costs. Different sidings are rated for different energy efficiency. For instance, Cedar Ridge Siding, which we sell at Conservation Construction, was specifically designed to lower energy costs by up to 40%. House wraps which are placed before the siding is installed can also significantly increase energy efficiency as well. Ask about both the sidings energy efficiency and the wrap the company uses to ensure you get the best energy efficiency out of your home.

Pest Control

A lot of sidings on the market today make it so that the materials they use are pest resistant. This covers most things like bugs, rodents, and even birds. It’s good to make sure to ask if the siding your getting is pest resistant though to ensure you don’t have problems down the line.

Rot and Mold

It’s such a hassle to have to clean off mold from old siding. New sidings tend to be rot and mold resistant. Once they are on your house you can truly just admire them and not have to worry about mold problems. Make sure you ask though if this product is mold resistant. Some companies cut corners on production to reduce cost, and you don’t want mold problems down the line.

How Long Will Installation Take?

For your own schedule’s sake just make sure to ask how long it will take to install the siding. At Conservation Construction we like to be efficient and get your siding replacement done as cleanly, correctly, and efficiency as possible. We also want it to go as smoothly for you as possible.

Maintenance

New siding, once installed, should have minimal maintenance over the life of the siding. New sidings from Conservation Construction are all fade resistance and never have to be painted again. In addition, once the new siding is in place they should require very little cleaning and maintenance over the life of the siding. Really you can just sit back and admire them for the life of the siding.

Efficient Windows, Doors, and Siding Can Reduce

Your Carbon Footprint

In a world where everybody is getting more environmentally conscious it’s good to know that companies like Conservation Construction make products that save energy and can help the environment. In today’s world you can buy hybrid cars, use less plastic, and even get windows which help with your energy costs and reduce greenhouse emissions. Let’s go over some of the ways windows, siding and doors are changing the world . . .

Not only do energy efficient products save you a ton of money on your energy bills, they also help the world. With energy efficient products you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from your home and from the power plants. If everybody were to jump on board and get new windows we could reduce the world’s overall carbon footprint.

Windows

Switching to new windows alone can reduce the annual household’s carbon footprint by up to 12% compared to non-energy efficient products. In addition, energy efficient windows can save between 246-2001 pounds of CO2 a year (equivalent to 13 to 102 gallons of gasoline). On top of helping out our environment, new windows can save you anywhere between 126$ to 465$ a year on energy costs - which will also make you a happier person.

Siding

Siding replacement is a very eco-friendly option. Siding not only reduces your carbon footprint by creating a better energy efficiency for your home, some siding like Vinyl can be installed over most existing exterior substrates to reduce waste. Fiber Cement Siding, which is also available through Conservation Construction, is one of the most Eco-Friendly siding types on the market today. Fiber cement siding emits fewer toxins when destroyed and is made from natural materials like wood-pulp and sand.

Entry Doors & Patio Doors

New energy efficient entry doors and patio doors work the same way as new windows and siding. Doors from Conservation Construction can reduce your energy costs by up to 40%. That’s a huge saving on your energy bill and can help reduce even more carbon emissions.

Energy Efficient Products

Energy Efficient products are always on top ten lists for ways to reduce your carbon footprint. If you have energy efficient exteriors like siding, windows, and new doors this will prevent energy from escaping your home and reduce your overall need to turn up and down the thermostat.

Have you noticed some wasps in the area? They may be closer than you think. Wasps love to make their nests near windows and siding. They especially love the areas of shelter underneath soffit and fascia on a house. Wasps nests are easy to spot not just because of the wasps in the area, but also because of their ugly brownish looking nests. See picture below.

It is such a nuisance to have to deal with wasp nests. I’ve had to deal with more than my fair share throughout my life, and they are not as easy to get rid of as one might think. In today’s article we’ll give you some solutions on ways to get rid of wasp’s nests easily.

Insecticidal Spray

This is probably the easiest solution. Stand far back and use the spray to coat the outside of the wasp’s nests. Wasp spray is an insecticide that combines several main wasp neutralizing chemicals called pyrethroids. Wasp spray releases these chemicals in a powerful blast that knocks down wasps from out of the air. After you’ve sprayed you can gently remove the nest without fear of getting stung. This spray can be bad for you to breathe in, so use caution when spraying.

Garbage Bag Method

If you’d rather not spray you can always wait until the wasps are a little more tired. You can approach the nest at night when the workers and queen are present to assure you have all the wasps gathered together. Slowly cover the nest with a garbage bag. Then you can detach the nest carefully from the wall placing it in the garbage bag. Once you seal the bag, the wasps are trapped inside the bag and you can dispose of it properly. This solution is easy without fear of spraying toxic chemicals everywhere.

Power Wash The Nest Away

This one is a bit more risky but is great for those nests that are out of reach. You can always use a power washer to dislodge the nest from its spot. Water will prevent the wasps from flying and once the nest is on the ground you can dispose of it properly. You can also use pressure washing to clear off your siding while you’re out there cleaning the nest away.

Natural Remedies

There is one really cool natural remedy to deter wasps and that is peppermint oil. If you’ve noticed you’ve had to clean off wasp nests several times from your siding or windows you can place a little diluted peppermint oil in the frequented areas and this will deter wasps from nesting. The cool thing about it is that it also deters other nasty bugs as well - and it’s not harmful to you or the creatures.

Stay Vigilant

Just because you’ve removed a nest doesn’t mean another one can’t form in the same spot. You’ll want to check back on the area where the nest was to ensure they haven’t started yet another colony. If they have, it’s best to do the same steps again before the nest gets any bigger.

Final thoughts

Remember, you can use a multitude of methods to get rid of wasps. Use insecticidal spray, take down the nest at night, or pressure wash the nest away. Use peppermint oil to deter the wasps from placing other nests again. If you’ve successfully removed a nest from your siding or window, and realized through this process that you are in need of new siding or windows, please give us a call. Conservation Construction would be happy to give you a free quote on new siding or windows. Thank you for reading today’s article. When Does Siding Need To Get Replaced?

So you’ve looked at your house and you think you may need new siding, but how can you know for sure? There’s some chipped paint, but does that warrant new siding? In today’s article we’re going to cover the basics on siding replacement. You’ll learn all the tell-tale signs which indicate you may need siding replacement. Come with us as we go beyond cracked paint and into the nitty-gritty of when you need to replace your siding.

Water Damaged Panels

If you take a couple minutes of your time to simply grab a screwdriver, go outside, and poke underneath some of the panels on your siding, this will tell you a lot about the overall status of your sidings health. Panels which are wet to the touch or have moisture trapped behind the panels themselves indicate it’s time to replace your siding. You don’t want water getting underneath your siding. Siding is on the exterior of your home to prevent water damage to the foundation. If water is already under the panels it may already be damaging inside components. If your siding panels are water logged, replace your siding ASAP to prevent further damage.

Rot/Mold

You can usually see this problem from a visual inspection as well. Rot and mold have a lot to do with the first issue, water damage. If water is getting into or staying on siding panels it’s easy for panels to rot. Look for mold underneath panels as well. During your inspection you should be able to see mold either on the surface or underneath panels. Mold is bad for your home and it’s bad for your health. It’s best to get siding replacement to prevent further problems down the line.

Warped Or Cracked Panels

Warped panels go beyond chipped paint. If you see bubbles or warping within the siding itself this is a clear sign that you need to replace the siding ASAP. A new coat of paint won’t prevent water damage like this. Bubbles on the surface of siding are yet another indication that water damage is occurring. If you get siding replacement now, it will prevent even more costly repairs down the line. 20+ Year Old Siding should be in consideration for replacement. Siding has developed a lot over the past couple decades. It is more durable, reliable, energy efficient, impact resistant and beautiful. Old siding made of wood, steel, or ancient vinyl should get replaced immediately as they typically drag down a home’s overall energy efficiency and beauty.

Wood Siding

If you have wood siding on your house which has not been maintained over the years, this too needs to get replaced. Wood siding needs to be painted more often than other sidings. If not, it will get water damage even easier than other sidings on the market today.

Loose Panels

The last indication you need new siding are loose panels. Siding should completely adhere to your home. There are a lot of reasons that siding may loosen such as shoddy installation, wind damage, or the home may be settling. Regardless of the specifics behind it, loose siding cannot properly protect a home and should be addressed immediately.

New Siding

The good news is that the new siding installation will protect your home for years to come. Our entire line of siding replacement products here at Conservation Construction were engineered and designed to last a lifetime. This siding isn’t like any siding from the past. This siding was made for longevity, energy efficiency, quietness, and beauty. New siding is fade resistant, and acrylic siding never has to be painted. There are several things you can do to tell if you need to replace old siding. We’ll cover most of all you need to know about this in today’s article. Your home’s exterior is important, and you should know when it’s time to replace your siding so damage doesn’t occur down the line. This happens easily when paint gets old and water gets through the cracks. So, just what are the things you should know?

Visual Inspections

It’s not always easy to tell from a far distance away if you are in need of new siding or not. Paint can be deceptive and hide things that are under the surface. The easiest thing to do is to inspect to see if you are in need of new siding. All this takes is a close up inspection of the siding itself.

The first thing to look for is chipped or cracking pain. This may seem obvious, but it isn’t always obvious to everybody. Chipped or cracking paint can mean that the paint itself isn’t protecting the wood siding or vinyl siding from getting wet. If you’ve already waited this long to paint your house, the siding underneath is probably already damaged.

To inspect this further you can take a screwdriver and poke under individual panels to see if the pieces themselves or the wood underneath the siding has absorbed any water. If this is the case, you’re going to want to replace your siding sooner rather than later because a new coat of “Paint” won’t solve the problem.

Vinyl Siding Inspections

Vinyl Siding damage in particular is easy to see upon close inspection. These are two tell-tale signs that you need to replace old vinyl siding and they are; Bubbles forming on the surface of the siding and warped tiles of siding. If you have either of these problems going on this indicates water damage as well. It’s only a matter of time before water can soak into the foundation itself causing even more damage.

On top of this, vinyl siding can accumulate mold or mildew causing you to have to power wash it on a regular basis. Plus this stuff on your exterior siding drags down curb appeal making your damaged siding look even worse. Who wants to have a siding on their house with a permanent “maintenance required” siding for the rest of the time they own the home? New vinyl sidings don’t have the same mold/mildew issues as vinyl sidings from the past.

You may be asking yourself, as I was back in the day, what exactly are Soffit and Fascia?  For some, you may have never even heard the terms before. Although these items aren’t well known, they are still essential to your home as pretty much every house has them.

What Are Soffit and Fascia?

Soffit: is the exposed siding underneath your roof’s overhang.

Fascia: goes hand-in-hand with your home’s soffit. Fascia is the area of siding directly above the soffit. It’s the exposed horizontal board you see on the front of your roof’s overhang.

See the images below for a visual picture.

Why Are Soffit and Fascia Important? Here are the reasons;

  1. They protect your home from strong weather like rain and wind. Soffit also guards under the eaves of your house and prevents outside things from blowing inside.
  2. They prevent water from accumulating, allowing it to sheet off and away from the house.
  3. Soffit ventilation helps keep a steady airflow between your roof and attic. Your attic needs to be well ventilated or else moisture can build up causing mold to form.
  4. They can keep the house more insulated from conditions outside.
  5. Soffit and Fascia Board draw heat away from the house.
  6. Your gutters are installed on your Fascia. Your Fascia needs to be able to hold up the gutters during sunshine and rain.
  7. Fascia is visible to everyone who sees your house because it sits on the edge of the roof. You can get maximum curb appeal by painting or replacing it.

When Is It Time To Replace Soffit and Fascia?

Now that you know what Soffit and Fascia are, where they sit on the home, and why they are important, it’s time to ask yourself if it’s time to repair or replace your boards. How do you know when it’s time to replace your boards? That requires a ladder and some old fashioned inspection work. It’s easy to spot if your Soffit and Fascia are worn down even from a distance. If you can see clear paint cracking, this is an indication itself you need to replace these items.

Upon closer inspection if you discover warping or water damage, the time is now to replace your Soffit and Fascia. Old wood has this common type of water damage. Other types of Soffit like Aluminum can become rusted, causing holes and damage. It’s easy for this type of damage to allow critters to enter. Old Soffit and Fascia can be rotting and decaying right before your eyes. You don’t want to wait until the water damage is so bad it is structurally damaging the roof line or exterior walls.

Furthermore, once you’ve inspected the Soffit and Fascia, concluded if you need to replace it or not, then you can move on to deciding if you want to clean the gutters out while you’re up there (I mean you are already on the ladder and got all the stuff out, right)?

In Conclusion, Soffit and Fascia are key items in keeping your house looking new, holding up gutters, insulating and protecting your home from storms. Do a self inspection on the Soffit and Fascia and see yourself if there is cracking paint or warped panels. If these things are apparent upon inspection, it’s time to replace the Soffit and Fascia. Lastly, you can inspect the Siding while you’re up there because people tend to replace that when they do the Soffit and Fascia.

You remember that old saying, shop around before you buy. I say do the research before you buy siding, and if you’re reading this article you’re making the right first step toward a bright new side of your house. That’s because there are a lot of wrong choices for siding out there, and once you learn to spot the bad ones you know which ones will work for your home.

What should you be looking for when you are looking for siding? Here are some quick tips to remember when shopping around for your next home exterior.

Some key attributes for a great siding are . . .

Durability: Is key

Strength

Rot Resistance

What Colors and Textures are you looking for?

Weather resistance

Maintenance Free

If you have just 4 of the attributes above for a new siding you’ll be in good hands, but the good news is that most sidings today come with all of these attributes and more.

Some now common/popular sidings on the market today are

Fiber Cement

Vinyl

Cedar Ridge

Steel

As with most things on the market today there are benefits and drawbacks to each siding out there. Let’s go over these most common types and get an understanding of which might be the best for your home.

It’s easy to spot the most common siding out there because it graces the side of the majority of houses in the united states. Vinyl Siding is the most common choice today because of its cost and ease of installation. In fact, most new builds are made with Vinyl Siding because of this reason. It’s the most common replacement siding for the attributes above as well. Vinyl siding has come a long way in advancements over the years. It no longer melts off the side of the house due to sun exposure. It no longer chips or cracks either.

Today, this siding is resistant to winds of up to 145mph and never needs to be painted again. On top of this it is still rain and hail resistant. Backed by Lifetime Warranties this ensures this siding will truly stand the test of time.

The second most common siding on the market today is Fiber Cement Siding. It’s unique in that its fire and insect resistant. It’s the only siding on the market that has a true fire rating.  This unique material and installation that make it hail resistant, in fact it’s virtually indestructible. These qualities make it an unbelievable siding for your home. It’s also these qualities that make it one of the more expensive sidings to install. It also comes in multiple colors so you can get the exact right look you are going for.

Finally, we offer Cedar Ridge Siding. This siding is different than other types of siding on the market in that it was made to look like real wood for natural beauty. It’s the only siding out there which was designed for impact resistance and insulation properties. Cedar Ridge Siding is engineered with Nepoor technology. This siding will reduced noise in the house by up to 45%. This siding gives energy savings of up to 30% of your entire bill. Cedar Ridge has mix and match technology. We work with you to choose the perfect color for your home!

Unlike wood shingles or wood clapboard which requires maintenance, all of the sidings listed above require little to no effort to upkeep.  New siding won’t be expanding or contracting in the sun. You just can’t go wrong with new siding whichever you pick.

In conclusion, it’s easy to get the siding you want at the price point you want. Stay away from wood siding as it requires a lot of upkeep. Ask yourself what look you are going for, what you are needing out of your siding, and where you want your house to be in 10 years. If you are thinking of moving soon a cheaper (yet still strong and beautiful siding) such as Vinyl might be a better option for you in the short term.

Again, thanks for reading and we’ll see you for our next article. We encourage you to comment below on which siding would be your dream siding to have on your house. Let us know in the comments below. We’ve hope you’ve learned a lot today reading this article.

It should be no surprise to my audience today that Siding has a long history. It’s evolved greatly over the years so it’s not hard to tell that siding products today such as Fiber Cement Siding, Vinyl Siding, Cedar Ridge Siding are strides ahead of old wood siding or aluminum siding. Throughout history there has been so many different types of siding out there, and some were obviously worse than others. Let’s take a trip through time and see how siding evolved, and which siding was the best throughout history?

What exactly is siding according to the definition? It’s the protective material attached to the exterior wall or house. Most sidings consist of weather resistant material.

Thatch Siding

Thatch siding doesn’t hold up to the standards of today, but for the time it was quite innovative. It was a widespread material used for roofs and walls. People used to weave together dried vegetation into patterns for that would direct water away from the house. Stone walls were built on some houses, and Thatch was set on top of the walls to form the roof.

Shiplap Siding

Another popular choice back in the day was Shiplap siding. This method of siding came out of the ships themselves. Shiplap likely gets its name from a style of shiplap that was once used to make ships. The same overlapping joint that makes true shiplap tight and weatherproof in a house, made for a water-tight ship too. This type of siding is getting reinvented and is being placed on the interior of houses--see image.

Wood Shingle Siding

Wood shingles were also popular. These boards would sometimes imitate the Shiplap Siding look. There were problems with this type of siding of course. If this siding is not taken care of it has a tendency to rot, warp or twist. If gone unchecked this siding could cause damage underneath the siding itself. This siding was often imitated later with plastic. You can still get the wood shingle look today with Vinyl Siding which is more resistant to weather.

None of the sidings we’ve listed above are the best sidings in history, but they did help us to get to new innovations in siding technologies.

Vinyl Siding & Modern Materials

Modern sidings come in a variety of materials, but the most popular in the United States and around the world is Vinyl Siding. That’s probably because it’s easy to install, it’s cheaper than other types of siding, and it’s still durable and strong. It’s come a long way from melting off the sides of houses like it used to. Most new build homes opt for Vinyl Sidings for all those reasons.

The second most popular siding is James Hardie or Fiber Cement Siding as it’s known. Properly Installed Fiber Cement siding is extremely weather resistant and beautiful. It’s now a common siding material amongst many homeowners. It’s unique in that is has baked on color which never fades and never needs to be painted again. It can have the look of natural wood grained siding. It’s high quality comes from cement and cellulose fibers. It’s a top quality siding option for those who are looking for even more impact resistance and lasting beauty.

Finally, exclusive to Conservation Construction, is a new type of siding called Cedar Ridge Siding which was developed within the past decade. Personally working for this company this is my favorite of all types of siding. That’s because it’s extremely unique and energy efficient. It’s more insulating that Vinyl or Fiber Cement. This siding does not cost as much to install as Fiber Cement, and it’s able to withstand winds of up to 165mph! Wow! It also has mix and match color technology so you get a home with a unique look that is totally you! Not to mention this siding has been known to reduce noise in a house by up to 45%.

Final Thoughts

In Conclusion, you can’t really go wrong with any modern siding materials as they are all weather resistant, insulating and reduce noise.

As you can see there are plenty of siding choices out there on the market today. Throughout history there have been many iterations of siding from natural stone, to wood, to thatch, to modern sidings like Vinyl and Cedar Ridge Siding. It’s up to you to choose the best siding for your home. Remember, if you are thinking of replacing your siding you can always count on Conservation Construction to do all the hard work for you. Are you looking to improve the outside look of your home? There are plenty of things to consider. Many people are familiar with Siding products such as Vinyl or James Hardie which have made advancements in protecting and insulating your home better. But what about the dark horses such as Soffit and Fascia? Both of these products are key to a top notch looking home, but they are easily overlooked because 1. They are hard to see from a distance. 2. Most people don’t even know what they are. So let’s get some education today and go over why, if you are replacing your siding, why Soffit and Fascia usually need to get replaced during this process.

What Are Soffit and Fascia?

An exterior soffit is located beneath the rafter tails of your home. The fascia is the exposed horizontal band you see at the end of the rafters. These architectural elements found on the outside of your house do much more than just add accents of beauty. They protect your home from pests and can give you clever ways to disguise ventilation systems to important parts of the house. A lot of rain and wind can damage these components over the years. Wear and tear can make these pieces inefficient. Some soffit and fascia can be so bad that is is literally warped or drooping from the home. Water can also get stuck on these drip edges.

Why People Choose To Replace Soffit and Fascia When Siding Is Installed

It’s easy to see why people install these items when they get a siding remodeling project. You wouldn’t remodel and entire kitchen and keep your old stove which is less efficient and out of date, would you? It’s the same concept with Siding installation. Soffit and Fascia usually go hand and hand with a new Siding. Properly installed siding usually comes with installed soffit and fascia boards. This is because it’s matching and is easily installed with Vinyl Siding or whichever siding you use. Installed together, Siding, Soffit and Fascia add insulation and protection for your home. They are able to withstand high winds and are usually better than existing aluminum soffit or wood soffit.

Why Different Materials Now Vs. The Past?

Traditionally old soffits were made of wood and aluminum. Now most homeowners opt for vinyl fascia and replace existing soffit with vinyl soffit as well. This is because of its durability and maintenance free properties. If you replace new Soffit and Fascia with vinyl or any new product which has these properties they will last a lifetime. This means they never have to get painted again. You really can just set it and forget about it for the rest of time.

Is it time to replace your Siding, Soffit or Fascia?

If you’re even asking this question there is no doubt in our minds that it’s about that time to get this project done. More specifically, if you are seeing warped or cracked panels on your siding, peeling soffit or fascia, small bubbles underneath the surface of any of these items, it is time to get these replaced. We encourage you to get these things done now before water seeps underneath the surface. If this happens it’s only a matter of time before it can damage the foundation itself and that is an entire other expense that you don’t want to have to deal with, trust us.

Final Thoughts

Replacement Siding, Soffit and Fascia are the perfect match for each other. You can’t really replace one without replacing the others. It’s important not to overlook Siding, Soffit and Fascia because they are all important components to a nice looking and energy efficient home. In Conclusion you just can’t go wrong with any of these products because of their durability and maintenance free properties.  You can pick the colors to match and choose the style that’s just right for your home.

Red flags are made to send warnings or danger. Even though your home’s siding doesn’t have a literal red flag to warn you about when it needs to get replaced, there are several warning/danger signs that can pop up. Let’s go over the signs that are telling you it’s time to replace your siding. Because sometimes, these signs are not so obvious.

To see for yourself if you have any warnings on your home, you’ll have to do a close up inspection of your siding. This takes about 10 minutes of your time. You also might need a screwdriver, but look to Red Flag Number 1 to see for sure.

Red Flag #1:

Warped panels. Look at the panels on your house closely. If you find any panels that are warped, do a quick inspection underneath the panels with a screwdriver. Poking underneath, pay close attention to how firm the panels are. As a result, if they are malleable or soft this is a indication the panels may be rotted. Rotting tiles need to be replaced immediately. If they are not taken care of they can spread and even damage the structural integrity of a home.

Red Flag #2

Mold or mildew can be easily seen on the outside of the home and it’s another huge red flag when it comes to your home’s siding. Furthermore, mold or mildew is not only unhealthy to breathe in, it is dangerous for the siding as well. It can literally eat into the wood below the paint. It can damage wood so severely you may find yourself needing to replace all the exterior wood on your home. Mold can also make it easier for the wood beneath to retain water, which can destroy the panels even more too. Just washing mold off will not ensure it does not return.

Red Flag #3

Peeling paint or loose wallpaper may indicate that your siding is water logged. In addition, this tells you that water could be seeping into the foundation itself and the walls of your house. Siding of this nature needs to get replaced asap to prevent further damage. If you replace siding now you may be able to prevent thousands upon thousands of dollars of damage.

Red Flag #4

Bubbles underneath the paint in your siding. Additionally, this problem is common with poorly installed siding. Furthermore, Bubbles in the siding indicate that water is finding its way below the paint and collecting in pockets.

Red Flag #5

Fading paint. Fading paint alone does not indicate bad siding, but if you are having to repainting it every year instead of every 6-9 years then this is a huge problem. Waterlogged siding does not hold paint, and simply putting on a fresh coat of paint is not helping the problem. Replacement siding is your best option at this point in time. You should note too that new siding has new color technology that makes it never have to be painted again.

In conclusion we’ve read you all the warning signs. It is up to you to do your due diligence and see if your siding needs to get repaired. This means going outside and checking the panels yourself. Generally, make sure to check for the 5 things on our list which include;

As a siding contractor, we have many years of experience replacing siding. If you are not sure if your siding needs replaced, please give us a call for your free quote. We care about you and your home. Thanks for reading and please feel free to comment below on your ideal siding!

The very short and sweet answer is Yes. Energy Efficient Siding Does Exist! It’s exciting news too because that didn’t always use to be the case. New sidings have been engineered for longevity and energy efficiency. They are also built and designed for ease.

Now that we’ve covered energy efficient siding does exist, we can now go into grades. This isn’t graded on your average A-F scale that you see in most classrooms. Most builders grade siding gets its energy efficiency based on the R factor. This is not to be confused with the X- Factor (the popular British television program. Nor is it to be confused with the U-factor which we use to rate windows. The R-factor, or r-value, rates how well the material insulates the interior of what it’s covering. Different types of siding all have a different R-value. It’s this number you should consider if you are looking for siding that will reduce your energy expenditure.

R-Value

When it comes to the number the higher the value the better it is at preventing air leaks. The lower the number it is a clear indication that it’s a poor insulator. Look at the chart below for reference.

Compared to old siding which is on most homes, new siding can keep your home insulated. You’ll get a more stable temperature when you are heating or cooling your house. Energy consumption, heat loss, and air loss are reduced with some sidings by up to 19%. That is a huge factor when you consider your entire house.

As you can see by the chart the top R-Values come from James Hardie, Cedar Ridge, and Insulated Vinyl Siding. It’s not only strides above the energy efficiency of its competitors, it’s factors better. These sidings are the best to consider when you are ready to replace. It’s also important to note that most sidings are insulating. The insulation can also protect the house better from water damage during storms.

What Siding Adds Back

A siding Home improvement project can add back 72.8% back of the cost you spend on the siding. That’s not even including the additional energy savings you are getting with a project like this. That 72.8 percent is all added back into the home equity itself. Siding, whether you are selling or not, is boosting you to be able to ask for a higher price when it does come time to sell.

Let’s talk about individual sidings now.

An exclusive we sell here at Conservation Construction is Cedar Ridge Siding. This siding is the most insulating. The engineers who designed Cedar Ridge Siding made it this way on purpose. In addition to saving you money on energy, Cedar Ridge is extremely impact resistant, is able to withstand winds of up to 160mph, is maintenance free in never needing to be painted again, and can reduce noise in the home by up to 40%.

Second is our James Hardie Siding. It is the unique way this siding is installed that makes it so special. Made of a cement and cellulose fibers, once it is placed, it is resistant to hail and strong weather. It too has a very high R-Value which makes it energy efficient as well. It comes in an array of colors too, so you know you’ll be getting the exact look you are going for.

Our Vinyl Siding is upgraded and better than before too. It is insulated and adds energy efficiency to a home. It’s unique in that it too is has an insulating layer placed before the siding is attached. It is installed right over existing siding which makes it the most cost effective on the market as well.

And finally we sell Steel siding for Colorado as well. It too is impact resistant, virtually maintenance free, and can withstand strong hail. Although we’d recommend it for those who are looking for this type of style, it is not as insulating as the aforementioned sidings above.

If you are upgrading multiple exterior features, read our blog, Energy Efficient Patio Doors, to see how improved door performance can further reduce energy loss and increase comfort.

People have been using Wikipedia for years now for anything like research papers to just plain information on their favorite band. With so many people being able to edit and add their own information to the site, it is no wonder so many people rely on the resource for their daily lives.

Which Projects Are Adding Back To Your House The Most?

Here we come like magic, trying to claim that we can tell you things that Wikipedia can’t tell you about home improvement and equity. It seems a bit unbelievable, right? As a writer of this particular blog it seemed a little outrageous to me too. That was until I realized that there are several things Wikipedia can’t tell you about Home Improvement & Equity. This includes how much particular project will give you back in equity.

A Kitchen Remodel can give you back 80% of the cost you put into the project that you spent remodeling. Windows were also high on value during resale gaining 80% of the total cost back. Both of these options are great ideas to think about before you sell your home, or even if you just want a better looking house! A remodel has been known to lift my spirits and give me renewed hope in my house. We encourage you to do weigh both money back and happiness it will give to you in your life, both are important factors here.

What Is the Difference Between HELOC and HEL and Financing

I don’t think wikipedia can tell you the difference between a HELOC (Home Equity Line Of Credit) and a HEL (Home Equity Loan).  The difference between the two is that HELOC gives you a limit kind of credit like a credit card. You can use a little now you can use a little later. A Home Equity Loan gives you a large lump sum all at once. Both may have a lower interest rates than a typical credit card. The average interest on Home equity loans and HELOCs are around 5% depending on credit score. That’s a ton of savings over a credit card. Financing is a great way to reduce interest rates as well. It too will give a limit to what you can spend, but it usually gives you a time period where you’ll get not interest at all. It’s at those times you can pay off the balance without paying interest at all. This is great for people looking for a ways to skip over interest. This is what sets financing apart from loans.

What Is Sweat Equity?

The definition of sweat equity is this :an interest or increased value in a property earned from labor toward upkeep or restoration. Sweat equity is only as good as the person who is doing the sweat equity. If you decide to do all the labor yourself, but don’t have the skill set, you could end up spending more. Small mistakes can add up to huge costs later. Sweat equity, if done correctly, can save a ton of money off labor. For small projects like painting it is a must. Instead of paying the average contractor 4k to paint your house, you can pocket that cost and get some sun in the process. At the very most you can try to rope your friends in and do it for the costs of a couple pizza’s and paint.

Tax Benefits

The benefits are great with HELs because if you use them to do remodeling projects. If you itemize your deductions you may be able to deduct the interest you paid on the home equity loan. We bet Wikipedia couldn’t tell you that! Some of these loans can give you as long as 20 years to pay back the loan which is great if you want to pay home renovations back slowly. A home equity loan is set for a one time set dollar amount. Determine how much your project will cost before applying for a loan. After you calculate the cost up, add 10%-15% more for overrun on costs as a precaution.

Using A Loan Or Financing Makes Sense For Home Improvements

Finally, using Financing, HELOCs, or HELs is a great way to get home improvement done based one everything above. Just remember the list below and you’ll be fine. The benefits of these types of loans include

  1. Lower Interest Rates to 0% interest for a period of time depending what you plan you choose.
  2. Tax Deductions/ benefits can bring down cost.
  3. Spreading payments over a long period of time to manage upfront cost.
  4. You’ll have comfort and equity put back into the home for a sale later.

Happy Monday! We hope all of you have had a great weekend. Let’s get this Monday started off right! That means talking about home improvement. Hopefully we can use this article to distract you from the Monday blues!

So there are several things that negatively affect curb appeal, but let’s start with what I would like to call the most egregious offender . . . That is giant plastic animals in the front yard. Okay, although I know some people admire these objects in their yard, unless it’s Christmas, let’s keep the fake animals off the yard and embrace the fact that we live in Colorado. You could potentially have real deer visiting your home instead. Not only could it negatively affect your curb appeal for potential buyers if you are selling, the plastic deers are cheesy. If you still plan on keeping your fake animals stick, with real wood. Remember plastic animals are just a big no no.

Secondly, the landscape on the outside of your home is a big thing to consider keeping in great condition. As a potential buyer I would look for houses which were well groomed and didn’t have a bunch of “Must Fix” items that needed to get taken care of before I even moved in. This includes; weeds, unkempt grass, or crumbling concrete paths. Think about it, some of the items on this list are not that hard to maintain yourself. Mowing the yard every couple weeks makes a huge difference. This alone could be the difference between an okay looking house to a phenomenal looking house.

Take a look when you are driving through certain neighborhoods and it’s easy to see which people take pride in their grass and which do not. Even simply trimming up shrubs so they are less unkempt looking is a great way to add curb appeal. A well put together outside of your home reflects that you have a well kept home inside too.

Thirdly, consider fixing stuff on the outside of your home. This is your siding, windows and front door. Let’s focus in on the main thing people see from far away which is your siding/house color. If your old siding is faded, warped or water logged a potential buyer can spot this a mile away. Simply putting a fresh coat of paint can solve some problems. But upgrading the siding has multiple benefits including; adding equity into the home so you can ask for a higher price when you sell your home, give your home a pop of color to stand out, and gives you the look and feel of a new home. This will too give potential buyers or guests a great first impression of your home. In addition, new siding can add insulation, protect better from weather and reduce noise and energy use. How cool is that?

Finally, Old windows can hold fog, can be cracked and can really drag down the appearance of the home. A new set of windows or front door can give you that extra homey touch that gives your house the X factor to stand out. Windows and doors add energy efficiency to a home, equity and can add additional curb appeal. All of these things can add up to big savings and equity for you!

In conclusion, it’s easy to upgrade your home’s curb appeal. You can just stick to basics, mowing, pulling weeds, and adding a pop of color in the form of paint, or you can replace by adding siding, windows or doors. Each and every choice gives you a ton of options when it comes to color, asking price, and overall curb appeal of your home. Keep up the good work on your home improvement projects and we’ll see you next time. We encourage you to comment below on what your dream "Curb Appeal" project would be.

Happy Friday to all who have taken time out of their busy day to read this article. As it is Friday and not Monday there are a ton of reasons to celebrate including; the weekend, rest and relaxation, and hassle free living with new siding and doors.

I won’t hassle you with a heavy article today, instead, let’s take a walk down memory lane. Imagine the first time you purchased your home? Got it in your head? Whether it was a fixer upper or it was a new build I’m guessing you had extreme price in yourself, and in that piece of land you just acquired. You should. It’s an extreme accomplishment to have a house (this is coming from someone who lived with her parents most of her life, and is now admitting to that in this article). When I got my first home I felt like an adult for the first time ever. It’s a mix of emotions too. It’s kind of scary knowing that you’re responsible for the longevity of this house. You make the payments, you do the yard work, and for a first time homeowner that is a nerve-wracking place to be.

Still, I didn’t start to notice all the things wrong with the house until after I moved in. Isn’t that how the realtors want it to be, right? Hide and deflect any errors so that all you see is the big picture items in the house--i.e. Sunlight, kitchen, square footage, closet space, etc. That’s exactly what we saw. It wasn’t until after we moved in did we notice the leak under the sink and the faucet in the tub malfunctioning.

There are still items which I want to replace, but priority is put on longevity. We just got all new replacement windows. It’s literally changed the life of my house with how energy efficient they are. We encourage you to put emphasis on longevity of an item as well as its energy efficiency to

Build Equity With Siding
Most people don’t worry about their siding when their house is first built. Who would? When new siding is put up, your house looks brand new. It’s only after years of wear that your mind starts to wander to all the problems that start to arise. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be your mind wandering there. As a homeowner myself, I know how a Saturday or Sunday can go from let’s go for a walk to, OMG the sink is leaking! (this happened to me last weekend.)

As homeowners we are used to this sort of thing. Plans can get pushed to the back-burner in order to accommodate our home repairs.

You don’t have to push your home improvement project to the back of your mind until something goes wrong. It’s always fun to be proactive about a kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel or even a siding project. I’ve wanted to start several of these projects myself. What most people don’t know is that when it comes time to selling your home, these projects, especially siding, can add a huge return on your investment.

Home loans are necessary evil when it comes to living life, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most bang for your buck. Increased home equity comes with all Siding Projects. In fact, a home siding project can increase your home’s value by 78.2% of the cost of the project itself. That’s a ton of additional money you can ask for when it comes time to selling. Not to mention, new siding is energy efficient, has long term strength, increases curb appeal, and can make your home look and feel brand new!

New siding properties don’t just stop there. You’ll also get savings on your monthly energy bill and the inside of your home can quiet by up to 45%. That’s right, new siding can block the sound of outside noise. Here at Conservation Construction we offer;
Vinyl Siding
Cedar Ridge Siding
James Hardie Siding
Steel Siding

With so many options it will be easy to get the siding that best fits your home. Furthermore, new siding is leaps and bounds ahead of old siding. New Vinyl, Cedar Ridge, or James Hardie have durable color technology which means you’ll never have to paint the siding ever again once it goes up. It’s like that old infomercial I used to see as a kid “Once you set it, you can really forget it.”

You don’t even need to use a home equity line of credit to get siding either. With credit cards charging so much interest, there was a lot of emphasis on us to give our clients a way to afford siding in the cheapest way possible. That is why we offer 0% down financing *(for those who qualify). This affords you the opportunity to start a project you might not have had money for otherwise.

For a deeper look at how upgrades impact long term value, read our blog, What Wikipedia Can’t Tell You About Home Improvement Equity, and discover insights that go beyond the basics.

In conclusion, an investment in siding gives you a big return on your equity. On top of that you’ll get insulation, energy savings, the look and feel of a new home, a quieter living space, and more protection from the elements. All of these things add up to a lot of extra money in your pocket.

What is your opinion on new siding? We’d love to hear about it in the comment section below, and as always please visit our siding page to see which siding might be best for your home.
Until next time!
